hey ---one of my dreams was to own a vineyard and sell or serve from a cave. - I love wine

Missouri is good for this - I even considered the sandstone caves/mines down below Cherokee -but not anylonger :frown:

Our first house had a grape arbor but no grapes. I bought a couple of plants, concord and some white kind, and planted one on each side of the arbor. Those things took off! The birds enjoyed them as much as we did though and pooped purple all over the yard and sidewalks.

Which reminds me of another story. I took one of my 4 year old at the time grandsons to Menards one day. Someone had spilled a can of white paint in the parking lot and it left a huge white spot. Nolie's eyes got really big and he said, "Grandma!, look at that big bird poop!". Hehe

I love it too. It's a spendy adventure. Even with all the vineyard acres my family has, I don't have enough capital to make wine from it. Heck I'm lucky I get it sold every year.

Hey Wine Girl:

Do you ever stomp them grapes? Is that just BS? Sounds kinda fun ... and

Love4Vino

No Ian, we don't actually stomp the grapes. But I do inspect every load that comes in, and I sample (taste) each load and sign it off and certify them from being the grapes/vineyard/lot/clone etc that they say they are.

We finished harvest on Saturday!! woo hoo!!

I actually took a ton of photos and a video of the grapes being crushed this year.

here they are being dumped into the hopper and pushed through the auger.

all these photos were taken of the grapes on the last day this year.

this one was taken in 2003 - when I was stabbing the grapes (how we test the sugar and temp) prior to sending it up on the hill to be crushed.

ya'll are welcome anytime.

Redbear came out in June and I took him on a private tour of the winery, we did some wine tasting in the visitor center - he got to check out the snoopy museum @ snoopy's ice arena.

(charles shultz was born in St. Paul, but he died here in Santa Rosa)

It's a pretty place to visit. A little to spendy to live tho. I think about how much my matchbox house costs and where I could live back there for the same price and it just makes me SICK.

One I took of the fog rolling in on the highway a few months ago. Thought the b&w looked sort of eerie.

I have a photo of him sitting on the edge of the fountain at Simi Winery (where I work)

we also own ravenswood, franciscan, mondavi, mt. veeder.

mt veeder makes some really good cabernet and the franciscan's magnificat is one of my favorites.

I am partial to Minnesota and Missouri grapes for some reason- the shorter season maybe --- I dont care for Australian or east coast wines

my favorite:

I don't mind the grapes sourced from the regions, I think it's pretty cool that they aren't Vitis Vinifera

but I find the winemaking to not be techinally sound. The So2,Brett and VA tends to be a little too elevated for my palate.

Me 2 - Have you ever tried any Sauvignon Blancs from South Africa? they are wonderful.

Not a huge fan of OZ or New Zealand wines myself (altho my company owns a lot of them) I find the whites to be grassy / catpissy and the reds to be a little too simple.

also Oz Shiraz (same grape as syrah - but usually fermented in a roto fermentor to extract more tannin) isn't a favorite of mine either. I think it tends to taste gamey.

I just read what I wrote.

I swear I am NOT a wine snob.

not not not!

catpissy = best wine term I've ever heard!!
Wed, 11/02/2005 - 10:37 AM Permalink
Love4Vino

it's an actual term.

"It's unfortunate how sometimes the best way to describe something you like is a word or phrase that doesnÂ’t normally make people think good thoughts. Such is the unfortunate case for Sauvignon Blanc which, at times, manages to smell just a little like cat piss."

the article I just got the above quote from

Coopers Creek Vineyards, a winery in New Zealand, actually produces a Sauvignon Blanc called "Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush.
