Byron White

I find it revealing that a significant number of conservatives I know (and even work with) either oppose the death penalty on moral grounds or are inclined to. But they are consistently put off by the radical chic crowd, which has grown deceitful, narcissistic and married to agendas no conservative would ever sign on to.

It would be nice if the most vocal opponents of the death penalty pondered that during this teaching moment. But they won't, because they think they've got nothing left to learn.

I once was ticketed at 2am for an overnight snowfall that added up to a whole inch. (Which melted by noon anyway).

Are you sure you weren't ticketed for the parking on the street after 2am rule instead? I think that rule is in effect every night from 2-6 whether it snows or not. I think it lasts from 12/1 to 4/1?

huh??

are you kidding??

I love the way they do it...

I've never gotten a ticket ...just be glad as hell they never tow!!!

All you need to do is move your car after they plow...

2 tell you the truth I wonder why other cities can't be as good as ssp.

Ely has used the odd/even system ever since cars were invented and it works perfect. I think it's in effect for 6 months up there though.

The City would like to remind all citizens of two very important ordinances regarding City streets:

* Muncipal Code Section #1305.19 states: "Except when otherwise posted, marked or metered, no vehicle shall be parked on the streets or alleys in such a manner as to obstruct or interfere with snow plowing or snow removal." This means that all residents must move their on-street parked vehicles as soon as the snow falls.

    * Municipal code Section #1305.13 states: "No vehicle shall be upon any street in any one place for a longer continuous period than 20 hours". The purpose of this ordinance is to encourage residents to move their vehicles from the street and other public areas on a frequent basis to not interfere with snow plowing and public safety.

Unmoved vehicles slow down the City's plow trucks by requiring additional plow runs, and could result in the vehicle owner receiving a "snowbird" citation (typically $20.00 to $25.00). Citations are issued by the police department after the streets have been cleared of snow. Vehicles still not moved will be towed to the impound lot, and the plow crews will then plow those areas where vehicles were removed. Owners of towed vehicles should be prepared to pay the following: $83.25 includes tow and 1 day of storage and an additional $15.00 per day for storage totaling $98.25 for the second day! Please help us and yourself . . . don't interfere with snow plowing and removal!

It didn't specify where to move them to. Just move them up a few feet. You're well within the law if it goes to court.

It's second nature in Ely and everyone abides by it subconsciously. I don't think they have as many cars as SSP though. There isn't the space problem since 3/4 of the town is over 80 and can't drive anyway.

There in no 2am rule in SSP. I used to park everynight on the street.

I got one of those "snowbird" tickets last year after a 1 inch snow fall.

Its just very vague. If the streets aren't plowed at all and you happen to be parked when they come through- you get ticketed or TOWED.

yes they do tow- i've seen it several times on my block

They tow, Kitch. I've watched many cars being towed that belong to the apartment building across the street. First they ticket, then if they come back and if the car is still there, they tow. Personally, I'm glad they tow. I can't even park in front of my house because of all the cars belonging to people in the apartment. If they didn't tow, I'd have to wade through two feet of snow to get to a car when I get picked up.

I got ticketed once while my son was trying to jump start my car! Was told the plow was on the way so I got the ticket. Plow never did come by that storm. NEVER!

There is also a "20 hour" rules that states that a car cannot be parked in the same spot for more than 20 hours.

Now you would think this wouldn't be an issue most places, but all you need is one person...

We have an elderly man across the street who has alot of time on his hands and he has this "thing" about people parking in front of his house. (not sure why, he has a garage and driveway) So he keeps track of whose parked there and if goes over a day he calls the cops. I've seen him several times going round and round with an officer cuz he wants them towed. He also comes out of his house to tell people to move their vehilcles.

The parking rules has been an issue on our block being that my side of the street is all duplexes and small apartment bldgs. (OT can attest to that)

I did succeed in getting the city check the off-site parking behind the building across the street from me. There were four abandon cars and a boat being stored (illegal) there. Newer buildings have to have enough off-street spaces for each unit, but this building was built before that ordinance and they're way short.

how long after a ticket...do they tow??
Fri, 12/16/2005 - 2:16 PM Permalink

First a ticket. And if the car is still sitting there on their next pass, they call in the tow truck.

well...at my first house...the plows just drove around your car....

I'd have to DIG out of the plowdrift....could move it up about 20 feet or so....and be fine...

later in the day a smaller truck would "MOP UP"

(same thing here at this house....) but I have off street parking....so I don't really care...

The 20 hour rule is during the summer also.

I'm not sure why they have this rule. I'm guessing it's so that people don't leave non-running cars on the street. But 20 hours???? Where did they get such an arbitrary number. So if your sick for a couple of days your suppose to go out a move your car 5 feet? What do you do if you're going on vacation? Like I said you probably wouldn't know this law exists, but all it takes is one person.... you know the type.

This is the same reason I'll never live where there is an "Association". One Nazi-esqe person to enforce all the "rules".

Naw its mostly about people who spend alot of time and energy about small insignificant things.

My parents live in sticksville, way out in the country on a circle with about 20 other houses. The same people have lived there going on 25-30 years. There have never been any big issues and the small ones were handled politely. This family moved in about 5 years ago and everyone calls the mom the "leash Nazi". She makes it a point to remind everyone about the leash law and a has called the township about it. Mind you it's a township- no police, no animal control. There haven't been any dogs problems in the circle. No one has ever been attacked. Our dogs went over to the neighbors, their's came over to our house. No big whoop. She actually stalked my sister one night while she was walking my parent's dog and got in a huge argument about it. She pretty much has been a pain in the ass about nothing.

The funny thing is, one time my sister was walking my parent's dog WITH a leash on and her dog jumped the invisible fencing and attacked my parent's dog. Luckily my sister broke them up and there was only scratches. Of course the Leash Nazi came running out and fratically began apologizing. My sister tore her a new one. Isn't that how it goes? People who tend to focus on other peoples crap seem to never take care of their own crap first?
