Kitch, thanks for responding. You make my point well. We have a long list of rules, but most are subjective. Since we haven't found a way around the subjectivity, why do we have such a long list?
The question is rhetorical. I'll live with the way things are because there isn't enough energy here among other members to change things. And, since I am always pushing for members having a choice and since they clearly don't want one on this matter, I am going to quit pushing this issue.
Yay winter carnival. Yay treasure hunting. I am looking forward to Saturday and the upcoming two weeks!
I think our main problem is that people have become overly sensitive. It seems to me that everyone comes to the boards now with gloves up and guns drawn and the slightest hint of a touchy subject brings people out blazing and ready to attack. If we address everyone's slightest disgust at whatever, we'll be discussing things until the end of time. We can't put everyone in a protective bubble. It just doesn't work that way.
I really didn't want to say anything because it seems like everything I say in these threads gets misconstrued as an attack or a way to try to blow over the seriousness of things when that's not the case at all. The only reason I would want to blow over things is because it's apparent that picking fights seems to be common around here and sometimes the fights grow into this ridiculously huge thing that's totally unnecessary. I know some things can't be taken lightly. I completely understand that.
But seriously, doesn't this seem like constant nitpicking and rehashing and overanalyzing to anyone else? It's gotten blown way out of proportion and now we have rules and codes and laws and instead of just posting whatever nonsense, we now have to behave or risk getting slapped on the knuckles with a ruler. To me, it's just way over the top.
And to address what was said to me directly by TMK, this same sentiment can be applied to the whole board. Everyone doesn't always care what everyone else thinks or feels which is why we get in so many fights.
You're right in that there are people who probably come to the board with their defenses up and ready to attack at the slightest hint of provocation. I think that by at least addressing things now, discussing things here that we can at least work on changing that environment where people don't have to be so defensive and aggressive. That we can get more towards harmony and an understanding that allows people to enjoy this place more. I still think that we have to at least consider people's feelings and views. If we just start blowing everyone off for what they feel or how they're reacting, then we may be overlooking someone who really has a valid point. I think we want to make as many people feel like they're a part of this and that they matter. I'd like to think that all this discussion has helped, and there won't be as much problem with bickering and personal attacks.
I'm glad you said something, because with having a discussion, you can elaborate more on what your thoughts and feelings are on things.
As far as the nitpicking and rehashing and overanalyzing, a bunch of things happened to get us to where we are today. Serious things happened, and this is an effect of it. Honestly, I really don't think that the code is going to be a huge problem for you or other people. We're all decent people. The big thing for us all is just dealing with the people we don't care for. I think that we do that, then the code isn't going to be a problem. Personally, I'm not going to be watching every post with a fine tooth comb as to if it meets every criteria of the code. I see it as a guideline. To partially address Leelabell with what she brings up, I know she's concerned about the subjectivity of some parts of it. If there are ways that it can be written better to get rid of the subjectivity, then I think it would be great and we can put it in. I'll try to look at it later more. I just feel that what you'd like is even more subjective because it's more open to personal interpretation.
You're right G, we all don't care what others think or feel when we post things. Moderators do have to care though about what others think and feel when things are posted. I hope you don't see this all as a personal attack, because it's not. I just have a different perspective and different thoughts on it. I thank you and the others for bringing things up and discussing them. Even if we may not have changed the code of conduct in how it is written, I think we're helping change somewhat the conduct and how people can deal with each other.
No one has the right to define the experience of the cooler for another member. That being said we do have a responsibility to treat each other with respect. You do not have to like, care about or agree with people to treat them in a respectful fashion. It is as simple as that.
I think the reason people come here with their gloves on and guns drawn is because they have been attacked more times than once. A person can only take so much before they finally say enough is enough. The problem with this is, it's hard to tell when people are joking or when they are being serious, because this is the internet, not face to face. I think TC hit it right on the nose when she said that we all don't have to agree with each other and like each other to treat each other with respect. How hard is it to shake someone's hand or say hello, hey what's up? Noone's saying that we all have to be buddy buddy, but when we're all in a room together or in the park together, what ever, there's no reason or excuse why we can't be respectful towards one another. Those who can't handle it, lack the maturity it takes to be a responsible, respectful person. We were all taught manners and morals by our parents or another loved one, let's use them. Especially when the kids are around, I think that it should definately be implemented.

Yes, and we should really discuss something more important anyway, like ice cream.
How about - we just make it a rule that the attitude and grown up behavior we bring into this thread - we carry out through all the other threads - and be done with it?
no?
It seems like (although I've skipped the last few as they were long winded) Everyone is restating the same thing all over again. - we don't need to beat the horse - he is dead. Leave the dead horse alone. We get it that no one likes being made fun of - whether or not that will change (?) that is up to the people doing it - but believe me. I get it, and I'm about as slow as a snail, so my money is on everyone else getting it too.
I think this thread needs to focus on how to FIX and CHANGE the things we don't like - rather than bitch over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over all the stuff that we know what is wrong with it.
This is a FUN and POSITIVE group - move forward with the positive!!! we as a team can make this a better place - so stop all the whining about how much it sux when people act like asses - and focus on the good. My guess is - that if everyone does that, the bad will soon fix itself.
1. Put the egg yolks, sugar and flour into a bowl. Whisk the mixture together
2. Heat the milk.
3. Slowly pour the hot milk into the mixture while continuing to beat.
4. Add the vanilla extract.
5. Gently heat the mixture and keep stirring the mixture until it thickens.
6. Let the mixture cool in a refrigerator for 3-4 hours.
7. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker. Make ice cream following the instructions of the machine.
Note: It is possible to replace the vanilla extract with a vanilla pod, which should be split lengthways and added to the milk before heating.
Other flavors
Using the same recipe, you can prepare:
COFFEE ICE CREAM by diluting two teaspoons of instant coffee in the hot milk.
CARAMEL ICE CREAM by diluting either caramel prepared with 3 oz sugar, or one to two spoonfuls (according to taste) of ready-made liquid caramel in the hot milk.
MINT ICE CREAM: by leaving out the vanilla and adding a tablespoon of mint extract (mint alcohol) and several drops of green food color to the cold preparation. (Option: Add 2 oz of crushed black chocolate, as the same time as adding mint extract and the coloring.)
CHESTNUT ICE CREAM by adding seven tablespoons of chestnut cream to the cold mixture. For special occasions, you can add pieces of glazed chestnut.
MANGO ICE CREAM by adding 5 oz mango pulp to the mixture.
COCONUT ICE CREAM by adding 1 to 1 ½ cup grated unsweetened coconuts to milk. The coconut can be left in the milk or can be filtered by a sieve after standing for several hours, depending on personal preference. If necessary, add a little more soy milk (about 2 or 3 oz) to reach a certain thickness for ice cream mixture.

do you suppose you could add peppermint schnapps? Might make that ishy soy stuff more palatable.... :goofy:
Yeah, wasn't that funny.... I think he got the lowest amount of votes out of the 5 people running. He even campaigned heavy. But the woman who won beat him with like 5 times the votes.
