lilman! Dude- I'll start that fire, but somebody else has to keep it going, cause this year I'll not be mourning, I'll be out making memories in a snowy park!
FYI to those of you in the St Paul area..... Be aware that tonight at midnight there is going to be some major fiber repairs happening in the area of our Webster Hub site. 77 nodes will be offline for like 3 hours give or take.
It's so nice to have a Comcastic Connection!!! Not that I will be on the internet @ midnight, anyway...oh yeah, and I don't live in St Paul, either...but I can get there from here
Inks is registered and paid. Once Mark gets him clear, he'll be all set.
Tomorrow morning we go for the kidney stone fun. I hope they can get them both at this same time. It's possible that we will have to do this again down the road a ways if they can only break up one of them.
We have to be up at 4am so I suppose it's almost time to hit the sheets.
see and thats why the phone company is better than the cable company, otis. they have to maintain 99.99999% availability (5 minutes down time a year). no 3 hour down times for fiber replacement.
lets hope everything comes out allright for him, terry (that sounded bad, huh?).
and speaking of things coming out all right, my aunt is now one bone short after an hour of srugery today. back in early december her foot started hurting terribly. she figured it was another bone spur; xrays showed 3 or 4 fractures in one of the bones on her little toe inside the foot, with one of the fragments shattered. they decided the best course of treatment was to remove the offending bone.
Total downtime in the system gets split up in the end game among every single sub.
It's not just random fiber maintenance. A garbage truck felt the pole was in his way so he tried to move it. That in turn caused a tranformer to burn in turn damaging both our fiber span and that that of Quest. So they will get to enjoy an outage as well.
Well that would be a great thing if it was part of a redundant loop like our hubs (Sonet Ring). Everything that we do is done with the consideration that we too provide telecommunications to people. Everything we have in the mainline plant is redundant. Unfortunately in this case the span of fiber that was affected is feeding local nodes throughout town from the hub. There is no way to send a redundant loop through easment in one way and out another just for the purpose of remaining redundant. (The phone company does the same thing) There is also no way to avoid disruption on that single path. It would be no different then a span of twisted copper pair being brought down in a neighborhood that in turn takes down phone service to that specific area.
The days of old where it was just your TV that was off no longer apply to interruptions today. Fortunatly with everything being two-way (other then video) it allows us to respond faster then the local phone company can to local outages affecting twisted copper pair phone. Most of the time repairs are underway before most customers even know there is a problem. When someone loses phone or internet service we know here in real time that it's happened and a tech is dispatched within minutes.
With your standard phone service, local small outages aren't reconized until multiple customers contact the phone company to report problems. Unless of course you happen to have a pocket of subs with DSl in the same area.
Of course this (report problems) principle still applies to video problems in the plant here but 99% of the time same problems are caught with the two way services when they go out. Video outages set an outage once three calls have been received in the same node.
I personaly don't consider one service better then the other. The engineering principles are the same across the board. The systems are similar and run the same. Uptime is important to everyone but most of the time problems with home service fall on premise wiring issues. It doesn't matter if we're talking about Dish, Cable or Phone. Something as simple as a connector will mess up your dish signal same as your cable. Just matters whos signal is in the pipe at the time when people want to toss blame.
If people get the service they need/want then thats all that matters.
I work in a communications engineering department. It was my Telecom and switch background in the Army that got me hired here in the first place.
If I wasn't working for Comcast I would be working for Quest. I like the job and take pride in my work. In the end it's not about the name of the company.
Saturday: Minnesota Kite Society experts will maneuver their spectacular fliers and help novices with their kites. Horse and wagon rides, ice skating, a kids' medallion hunt and other activities are also on the agenda, and Fishing in the Neighborhood representatives will offer children's ice fishing and snowshoeing instruction. Noon-1 p.m.; Lake Harriet, 1300 W. 42nd St., Mpls.; free; 612-370-4948.
2 treasure hunts going on for my kids on the day of all days that I'm busy as can be...
I"m almost scared about 2mrw.
I'm cooking up 5 slabs of ribs and a turkey for this birthday party.....how I'm going to make it to the predig is beyond me....I know I'll be running on fumes.
oh i know, otis. just giving ya a hard time

big time!!! that's why all but 2 of my cable runs are at a point where i can say i've terminated them myself. no one to blame but me for a failure
We are home. The surgery was cancelled. The surgeon wants to confer further with the doctor and thinks there is a better method of dealing with the kidney stones.
Too bad they didn't decide to cancel this until we were already waiting for him to be taken into the surgical suite.
het kitch I was showing my wife pics of the crew @ coolertime have you seen THX's pic?
it looks like the meth billboards in St.Paul the before meth and........... the after meth

I pushed the fiber guys to get it done this week.
I'll be trying to do the same...I'm working M-Tu next week, then off through the end of the carnival...WOO HOO!

of course the phone company standard is to have the new fiber in the duct and lit before the one being replaced gets turned down.

I love when people call us to let us know they switched to key-west
