this is a great reason for me to continue collecting rocks and carved stones and fossils! To find something like this woman just did .... god, the luck! I'm thinking that my next trip south will have to detour through Arkansas.

I was just given a chunk of the old Mechanic Arts building and soon to have a piece of the 2nd courthouse (originally on Wabasha til 1932).

How cool is that?

The Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world's only publicly operated diamond site where the public is allowed to search and keep any gems found, regardless of their value.

where did you get the Mechanic Arts Blding chunk? what's it look like?

My mom went to school there. Brick? I think from the photos I've seen...

not brick, it's a carved stone, probably from a windowsill - I have to compare to a photo.

FYI: The latest issue of RCHS magazine has a big article on Mechanic Arts.

Speaking of which. Here's a question for ya me2. There appear to be reclaimed building stones setup at the end of Bruce Vento nature trail (the one along the bluffs near Cherokee park).

Any idea where those might've come from? They appear to be carved like they were part of a structure before. I've seen similar ones used in a west st paul park along a walkway.

that is awesome that the county takes such pride in their history. I'm starting to see these cool books popping up here about sonoma & napa county .. here is an example but they are just re-gurgitated crap that all the books seem to tell the same story. kinda a bummer.

I just so happen to know and am quite jealous. They are from the 2nd city hall/court house. I've heard that all/some where taken/donated from the Acacia Cemetery in Mendota Heights. Acacia was somehow given them when the court house was taken apart. I remember hearing a woman donated them to the cemetery and then over the last few years they were discovered looking like ruins in the cemetery.

The 2nd cityhall/courthouse sat on the same property as the Victory Ramp and the Pioneer Press Bldg is today (Victory Square Park once sat on this whole block too back in the late 1930s -40s).

wine and everything mix well with me.

this was a great book too http://www.amazon.com/Napa-Story-American-James-Conaway/dp/0618257985>

It's got a lot of the dirt that went on a long time ago. Funny thing, many of the people ref as "evil" and Heublin (the evil empire) were friends and biz associates of my family.

My family got by without a mention in the book (whew!) but I now work for the company that was formerly Heublin. :eyeroll: I guess we all can't be good.

have you ever had pear wine before?

I had hot pear cider the other day and it was wonnnderful
Sat, 09/23/2006 - 1:00 PM Permalink
Love4Vino

was it from Ace? Widmer?

I've had all the ciders from Ace, as they are made about 5 minutes from my house. I'm not a fan of theirs. They have a brett problem.

The Widmer I dig, I like to mix half apple with half peach. The pear is yummy too.

What is really good is pear with guiness (or another local stout) for a snakebite

oh which begs a question. Anyone know about the winter carnival snowflake? Is it trademarked? You know, the one they have on their site and buttons and all...thought I might try having a snowflake on my coins somewhere, but unsure if I could use that particular design.

My roomate & I (at the small winery we are now both consulting for) are making some (I'm not sure what we are going to call it) can't call it cider, cause that is a different liq. license, so I guess we are going to have to call it wine.

mulled apple wine (closest I can come to describing it) It's going to be fermented apples, but then we are going to prespice and then carbonate it a little so it's bubbly.

should be interesting.

You'll never go to any other Oktoberfest after going to New Ulm. Next to Germany, it's the closest you'll get to the real thing.

Hey baby, do you have any German in you? Want some?! :pbpt:

White cars represent status-seeking extrovert drivers. I didn't pick the color of my car.. my car picked me. (it was used)

nothing about gold cars.. my Saturn is gold, and THAT i did indeed pick. But I wouldn't include that as cream..
