Couldn't have been a more dramatic way to win the ALC race. Last day of the season and having to wait extra innings to see how happened with KC and Detroit! The planets had to be aligned just so!
I had the TV AND the radio on. Had to listen to WCCO's last Twins broadcast. Won't be the same not hearing the game on 'CCO. :frown:
Regarding Maurer's batting title......I read an interview last night where he said that reporters kept asking him if he was worried about that and he said that he was telling reporters that he wasn't, but he was lying. :pbpt:
I was outside just starting to begin to start a campfire at my inlaws cabin.
As the smoke started to rise...and I was just starting to put a little bit more kindling on the fire I hear a faint.."HELP"...
I blow it off. Thinking it was the cabin next to us and somebody was installing stormwindow's or something.
As I added a small branch and sat down to sip on my beer I hear it again, "HELP" really faint...at this point I could tell the voice was not right. It was more of an question tone. I got up and ran and looked at the lake. I see a blue dot right in the middle of the lake.
CRAP!!!!
My first insinct was DAMN IT...we just took out the pontoon and speedboat this morning. There is a canoe but the paddles are put away and I'm not even sure I can get to them fast enough.
I yelled to my brother in law to help. He came out of the cabin as I was running next door to get a neighbor's canoe and pray they had paddles. I didn't care about a life jacket at this moment. I untied their canoe and we both carried it down to the lake. Small flight of stairs.
Lifejackets got tossed into the canoe and off we went....he can't paddle worth a shit...thank god I've taught canoing to scouts and a college class (explain in another story) when I was in highschool and college.
As I got near him...I recall'd my lifesaving skills from when I was a lifeguard at scout camp.
The #1 thing to recall is the most important...don't let a victom SCREW U 2.
As I paddled up I made sure he wasn't going to tip us over. I told him I would drag him if he would hold onto a rope.
I got him to shore and the first thing that came out of his mouth was, "I need somebody to get the kayak"
Lucky the cabin next door had their Sauna up and running and he was able to go inside 2 warm up.
He look'd fine as we left him there with the neighbors.
Turns out he was kayaking on the lake alone....kinda dumb...
but he did a few smart things.
1) Lifejacket
2) He didn't try to swim to shore.
3) Held onto the kayak and yelled for help.
why??
well...
I guess he was in the water for about 10-15 mins. as he was shivering and slurring his speech abit....but if he tried to swim he could have not made it.
Swimming increases heat loss (increase by 35-50%) and is possible you cramp up and passout.
I know its gotta just suck to stay still and yell...but he did the right thing....
Hey Diggin, I saw your post in the other thread as well. Just a couple of Ideas that you may want to pass on to the family.
Do you have Chevy's there? I think some of the other chains do it as well. I know Daphne's Greek, and Baja Fresh do. They have this fundraiser night thingy.
You pick a date, and then they give you a flyer which you fill in your Date / and the cause and give it out to all your friends/co-workers/ neighbors/ the more you get out there the better. Then All the people who dine on that night and bring in the flyer - 25% of their tab (usually including bar) will go to that cause.
It's called Dine and Donate night. There is no overhead, no real planning except getting the flyers out. We usually flood all our friends via email and have them print out the flyer etc.
My Drinking Cult with the Charity Problem did $250 last monday on Pizza $400 the Wednesday before @ Chevy's, and a few months back almost $800 at a steak house.
also, if you are interested PM me - I have access to manuals for how to plan/throw large scale charity events.
Something else to consider... if they belong to a church or a VFW or any other type of org that has a party, Ask if they can put together a raffle basket to raffle off at the event.
We do this every year - and get brewery's and liquor stores to donate beer/ pretzels/ mustard/ popcorn) Pizza places to donate 1 pizza a month for a year G.C.'s etc.
We charge $5 a ticket for the raffle, and give the pizza place the opportunity to have their restaurant have a $5 off coupon on the ticket for advertising (it's a win/win the people pay $5 for the ticket, it's a tax donation + they get $5 off pizza the would have bought anyway)
Last year's baskets brought in $1800 in one night. The year before $1600.
We also do 50/50 raffles at events. Buy a pack of tickets - sell them all for $5 at the end of the night - a ticket is drawn, the person holding the ticket gets half the pot - the charity gets the other half. Most people out of the goodness of their hearts will actually donate back the other half of the pot.
I believe most of the suggestions are being utilized. The bands have donated their time. Silent auction items are being donated as well as the catering. The benefits should be quite lavish - knowing my sister in law. I just thought I would post them here in case anyone had an interest or time in attending or donating. Every little bit helps.
I guess I'd always yell first and see what their reaction is before blasting away. Don Shelby told a story where there was an old guy who was wondering around in his house that turned out to have alzheimer's and didn't know where he was.
I'd feel sorry for anybody who breaks in here, with the intention of f'ing stuff up, and actually makes it past those two, cause I've got an arsenal of backyard wrestling moves/weapons - enough to take over a small country - stashed in various corners and closets...
Macy's put out a full page thank you to Annie in yesterday's paper. It was pretty touching since it complimented the front page story of the Dakota County section.
Macy's plans to hang a memorial plaque near her favorite table at the 12th-floor store restaurant.
Did you watch Letterman last night with the Subway Saver guy on as a guest? Thats an amazing story! I was thinking of what I woulda done in that instant of life and death! wow
:frown:
but I swear if I find bad thinks about the rootbeer lady...I'm going to cry!!!
"The heroics of the people involved in this can't be understated,"

Great story Kitch!!
You're my hero as well. Way to go pal. One can only hope that someone like you is a witness to their call for help.
A big ^5 is sent your way bud.
nothing special
Tell that to the guy you rescued!
He is actually on his way to MN for a transplant in the coming week.
His Auntie works at the Cantina (where we are booze hounds) and that is the connection to why I know about him.

there are fewer than 25 living U.S. veterans of World War I out of nearly 5 million who served worldwide.
Fantastic Hero link. Cudos to all the ol' heros
all the vets....
the pow/mias and those who died in action...
but two of mine, none-the-less...
I've been researching these guys for several months now, and people they were affiliated with....
damn man...
Although he's nothing compared to my cat.
