Interesting. I don't think they needed to say Phillip Pullman leaves Tolkien in the dust though. Not to sound like a big Tolkien supporter or fan, but the same goes true to anyone's work. It's like saying something is an instant classic, or better than the classics, and perhaps the classics don't need to be appreciated.
I mean, tell me it's an interesting story, worth reading of it's own right. Don't tell me it's a better story than something else.
