Redbear

Vince was a teacher for a while at the bartending college in St. Paul and once told a reporter, "You know, if you can put ice cubes in a glass, you can tend bar. What we're really selling is service. You're expected to know things; the odds on all the games, the fights and the races. You're expected to know where the women are and who played second base for the Yankees in 1923."

Vince needed a lawyer one time for a moving traffic violation. His counselor, John Cochran, introduced himself to the court as "Clarence Darrow, your honor, for the defense."

"The jury understood," Vince says. "There was not a nondrinker in the bunch. After the trial concluded, they all retired to Gallivan's with us to celebrate my victory."

But Vince also understands and accepts that times have changed greatly from those days of unbridled revelry. That is, however, not the reason he is retiring. At 85, his legs just don't want to keep bartenders' hours anymore.

"I lost my dear wife Verna in 1997 after 44 years of marriage, and I still miss her so," Vince says. "One day a couple of years ago, the Winter Carnival Vulcan's Krewe came into the Cherokee and called me out. I had to kneel down and be knighted. When it was over, a waitress had to help me get back up.

"I said to her, 'I suppose this changes your mind about our date.' "

Bear, he sounds like the type of person who you don't often meet nowadays. It really makes me miss my grandfather who was part of that generation that put a premium on telling stories and enjoying life. A great article.

Thanks for posting that Nick. This may be the year we try it again.

We've been boycotting the event for the last 5 years since they've screwed us over many times before that.

5 of 5 years they said it would cost one amount with a button and $5 to $10 less with a button. They never honored that commitment and would charge everyone full price regardless if they pointed out they had a button or not. Same thing if you donated a canned food item. And because my group only showed up because it was affiliated with the Carnival, we were insulted that they were using the carnival as a means to just get people to pay tp participate in their tournament and feed the pro's wallets. Was not impressed even after many of us mentioned it year after year. Finally we all said F-it! No more BS. It was very cool to put two of my passions together but I felt ripped off by one of them and it left a bad taste in all of our mouths. I can only assume that things are better now because their attendance is almost back up to where it used to be and you only save $1 if you have a button now. If we do decide to participate, I'd like to see how their pay structure is set up now. I could go on and on on how disappointed we all were with how the Carnival event changed over the years but it was still a great event if it wasn't for that one thing. There was one year where my favorite pop, Surge, was the sponsor and it kicked ass with all the events they had going on. I just hope it can get back up to that status level once again.

I've really wanted to participate in the disc event but no-one jumped at the chance to play with me last year. I would love to play in Como- how fun could that be? and I want the free disc and t-shirt! the sucky thing is that its the first weekend after the hunt begins! :frown:

I'm gonna sleep on it- if anyone is interested in playing either or both days please let me know- besides not having a team player the only thing holding me back is the dates! :frown: I wanna play in COMO terribly!!!!!

the disc football game got me incridebly excited! that sounds wwwway awesome!!!! I may do that forsure.

I don't want to play just one round through Como

<edit>even though thats all there will really be time for---- wish Como would just keep it up year round is probably what I think Im really getting at

Any idea where it actually is set up at Como?

I remember how they had it set up for the 2001 World Pro Championships but not sure if they'd keep it the same or not.

Another down side was our group wanted to play together and couldn't since it was set up as a tournament and they didn't want people messing with their scores. Um, sorry. I didn't come out here to play in the cold snow with a bunch of stuck up pros. I came to play with my friends and family. I wonder if they changed that yet?

hmmmmmmmm

I'll have to check into that-

I didnt do it last year BECAUSE I didn't want to be alone with people I didn't know and feel pressured to throw good and bad if I didn't do so good.

Its like being teamed up in golfing. If there are 1 or 2 people and the place is crowded then they can team people up to play at the same time- I HATE THAT! my worst golfing games are when Im teamed up with joe schmo - I feel rushed :frown:

Clue Master

Personally I do better when I'm teamed up with other people because I want to show what I've got. But it's not even close as fun as playing with people you know and like.

My phone system is being changed right now and I'm down in the hole so I can get any reception on my cell. Can you please call them and ask if they're going to allow you to play with your own team or not? Also if it matters what time we show up as long as it's between 9-1:30.

Thanks babe

you know I'm a sucker for a "pretty" face

they send out groups of 4

not a problem if you want to be on the same team together

they just don't want someone to "sandbag"

also they arn't up to their 100 but lots of calls have been coming in

she said they do this fundraiser for the aquatennial and winter carnival event.

also you could show up anytime between 9 and 1:30. They just send the groups out in 4s until there arn't anymore to send out

Midnight marks both the start and the end of each day in civil time throughout the world. Since, therefore, two midnights are associated with each day, conventions are needed to distinguish between them.

In the 24-hour time notation, the solution is very simple: "00:00" refers to the start and "24:00" to the end of a given date. In other words, "today at 24:00" is the same point in time as "tomorrow at 00:00".

With the 12-hour time notation, which is still used in Armenia, Greece, and parts of the English-speaking and South American world, there is no simple and unambiguous notation for midnight. For the official U.S. Government position, see http://tf.nist.gov/general/misc.htm

While it has become common practice for computers and digital clocks in these regions to display "12:00 a.m." for midnight and "12:00 p.m." for noon, these notations provide no clear and unambiguous way to distinguish between midnight and noon. It is actually improper to use "a.m." and "p.m." when referring to 12:00. The abbreviation a.m. stands for ante meridiem or before noon and p.m. stands for post meridiem or after noon. Since noon is neither after noon or before noon, neither abbreviation is correct (although the length of the error is determined by the smallest unit of time- 12:00:01 p.m. would be correctly notated). Similarly, midnight is both twelve hours before as well as twelve hours after noon, so both are ambiguous as to the date intended. The most common ways to represent these times are, (a) to use a 24-hour clock (00:00, 12:00, and 24:00), (b) to use "12 noon" or "12 midnight", although unless the person is referring to a general time and not a specific day, "12 midnight" is still ambiguous, (c) to specify it between two successive days or dates (Midnight Saturday/Sunday or Midnight December 14/15), and (d) to use "12:01 a.m." or "11:59 p.m." This final usage is common in the travel industry, especially train and plane schedules

Just to confuse you more.

you read the post too quickly is all!

Tim? how about I pay for all 3 of us (Tim, J & samantha) and you can pay me back at pre-dig or something.

I guess the pretty boy is snuffin' us

do you both agree that we play Saturday morning?

do you both want to also play in the football disc game? they both cost.

that way we have the rest of saturday and saturday night to hunt AND we aren't freaking out over paying for Sunday and then a greally good clue comes out Saturday night and we lose money cause we'd rather be hunting on Sunday than discin. get it? let me know
