Matty B\'s is the home of the Cooler Crew. We\'ve got a party going on every evening from 8 until the clue is released. Sunday night, if the hunt goes that long, the bar will be open but food will not be available.

Clues:

Clue No. 1 (Sunday, Jan. 21)
Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low
There’s no time for cold feet!
For searchers’ pleasure we’ve parked the treasure
Where nature lovers each other greet

Clue No. 2 (Monday, Jan. 22)
Boreas\' vast realm can overwhelm
Even diggers used to the long haul
So here\'s advice to put your hunt on ice:
Look no farther than good old St. Paul

Clue No. 3 (Tuesday, Jan. 23)
Hunters can be surly but in clue-time it’s early
Be safe, friends, and in the hunt revel
Near land that is high the treasure is nigh
Vagueness rules and that’s on the level

Eags

I think the reason there are too many words in that line could be simply because the clue writer was looking for a way to make the fourth line end in a rhyme with feet, doesn't know how to get the meter right, or took the shortcut method and "his sentence he ended awkwardly".

Clue #1

Posted: Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007

Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low

ThereÂ’s no time for cold feet!

For searchersÂ’ pleasure weÂ’ve parked the treasure

Where nature lovers each other greet

Â…here we goÂ…

So what do we think? Historically there are usually 3 pieces of information clue #1 can provide, in my humble opinion:

1. ItÂ’s in a park!

   2. A small abstract piece of information that may be of relevance in regards to any facet of the hunt.

   3. Nods, winks, and low-blows to the hunting community.

no time for cold feet

Item 1 is usually always declared, and always implied. There are always conspiracy theorists that always catch if it doesnÂ’t state that itÂ’s in a park and push the angle until itÂ’s been deadened by the later clues. Since it hasnÂ’t been hidden outside of a park since 1989 at the State Capitol, Most rational thought (mine included) directs people to believe that itÂ’s always in a park. There is supporting evidence of a burden that the 1989 Capitol Hunt caused due to the lack of accommodations the grounds provided, and the recent yearsÂ’ escalation of the huntÂ’s popularity since that time has increased the number of people searching for the medallion by a large order of magnitude. Also, the last time before 1989 the medallion was located outside of a park was in the ancient times of 1969, at 35E and Victoria. Still, one should never say never. This is not a closed minded competition.

Information provided from item 2 is usually not weighted heavily even if present in the first clue because of its vague nature, and the length of time [and number of clues] needed to qualify the information usually diminishes the value it has. However, for deep thinkers this is always a foundati

on that is relied upon, and information collected from Clue #1 should be neatly classified and stored for later reference.

Information provided from item 3 is usually for entertainment purposes, and there have been a number of chuckles sent my way from them, indeed.

Throughout the hunt I will be giving the Internet three things. One is my personal analysis of each clue, line by line if warranted. I tend to give quick thinking priority above overthinking a matter, and at times I may be very terse with my analysis until later clues allow me to “backfill” details from previous clues. We’ll see how well I can journal this progression as I usually have a clipboard with a mess on it as my thinktank. Two will be an aggregation of information from what I consider to be interesting or reliable sources. I’m of the discipline of thought that says this hunt is tough enough for a group of people, so whatever we can do and whenever we can improve each other’s hunt, let’s do so! (so please post your thoughts, too!)

This is a hats off to a long time hunting friend, Allison Wonderland, who always provides a reliable stream of knowledge and creativity.

I listen to Mr. Allison with a keen ear and everyone else who visits this site in search of the medallion should, too.

OK, so letÂ’s take this hunt apart to the best of my ability.

Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low

ThereÂ’s no time for cold feet!

For searchersÂ’ pleasure weÂ’ve parked the treasure

Where nature lovers each other greet

Line 2: Cold feet? ThereÂ’s a documentary about the medallion hunt by that name that should be out or is close to release. I havenÂ’t seen or researched the matter but I believe this is a strong nod in that documentaryÂ’s direction.

Line 3: “Parked” may be of some importance but we’ll need some firm help to improve this concept. Also may direct one to the ubiquitous it’s in a park!

Line 4: Â… itÂ’s in a park!

For now I donÂ’t feel the need to post any followup research. LetÂ’s get the next clue out already! When it comes to crunch time, I wonÂ’t say IÂ’m 100% reliable but I will tend have the clues up on this site as fast as any other. So if you want to do me the honor of jamming your reload button on my page, by all meansÂ…

I seem to make the same sad prediction every year. Might as well get it over with...here it goes...I'm thinking maybe we'll be hunting outside of St Paul this year. There I've said it, now I can move on.

Hey there! Just got back from Crosby awhile ago. We want to follow up on our earlier theory that Hidden Falls may still be in play. The entire park is closed off to vehicles, north and south end. You'll be walking or skiing if you go there, quite likely on the trail connecting from Crosby. No time for cold feet. Also (thanks to queen's "egret" anagram) there are two nature plaques around Upper Lake in Crosby that offer information about the wildlife in the park, both highlighting the egret.

2. A small abstract piece of information that may be of relevance in regards to any facet of the hunt.

I have to admit, I got sucked into the over-noodling of clue 1. Someone mentioned "cold feet" in reference to marriage, which beside como being the obvious made me think of "Marry-em" (although I think thats doubtful). The reference to the film made Marley think of Como.

"nature lovers" made me look for parks with some sort of marked, official or designated nature areas, which gave me Como, Crosby, Hidden, Horton, Marydale, MLK, IM, Phalen, Swede Hollow, Cherokee?, and Henry; as well as some of the Ramsey parks. This eliminates most of the Recs and small parks, I think we can probably eliminate Phalen and Crosby from that list.

Another thought on this line is to look for some sort of nature club that meets at or near a park. Anyone know of anything?

I agree with the nature areas list, however I won't really eliminate any park on clue 1 as that line could be some sort of red herring.

I like the nature club noodle, I'll have to try and google that. Better yet... KITCH?

Puckferrets

Why would you eliminate Phalen and Crosby? If it's because they were too recent, note that the medallion was in Como as recently as 2003, and that it was in Como only twice in three years: 2001 then 2003.

The Hidden Falls gate situation is interesting, I have heard conflicting reports as to if they are open or not. Does anyone know if there is any rhyme or reason behind when they are open?

I would tend to think if they are ever both closed at the same time it would be stupid to put it there, of course that doesn't eliminate the possibility they put it there

mucluck

The south gate is always closed all winter...the north is usually open, I do belive they tend to close it when it snows untill they can get the road cleared up - for safety sake.

Nature centers in Ramsey? Tamarack Nature Center at Bald Eagle-Otter Lakes. It's a big stretch, but...

I'm not finding much either. I guess I was hoping someone would pop in and say something like "I'm part of a nature club and we meet at so and so park every other wednessday."

I found 2 benches with plaques dedicated to naure lovers near the natural area at Mounds.

I was also thinking that nature lovers would greet (meet and greet) at a nature preserve=jelly jar? Could be a what it's in clue?

I googled nature lovers and St. Paul and came up with an entry at "10best.com" (a tourism website) that talked about Como Park & Conservatory. Here is an excerpt: "...Paddleboats, a small amusement park, a turn-of-the-century carousel, and an outdoor pool are also located there. Nature lovers can visit the biking and walking paths and picnic areas. Visitors can observe animals up close in ..."

This was the situation at the North Gate, at 3:54 pm. I was kind of crushed, as Hidden Falls is a kind of a favorite of mine. Then, at 4:01 PM, the gate was opened. A salting truck was salting the ramp, and I guess they were keeping things closed while they plowed and salted. The North Gate is now open.
