Matty B\'s is the home of the Cooler Crew. We\'ve got a party going on every evening from 8 until the clue is released. Sunday night, if the hunt goes that long, the bar will be open but food will not be available.

Clues:

Clue No. 1 (Sunday, Jan. 21)
Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low
There’s no time for cold feet!
For searchers’ pleasure we’ve parked the treasure
Where nature lovers each other greet

Clue No. 2 (Monday, Jan. 22)
Boreas\' vast realm can overwhelm
Even diggers used to the long haul
So here\'s advice to put your hunt on ice:
Look no farther than good old St. Paul

Clue No. 3 (Tuesday, Jan. 23)
Hunters can be surly but in clue-time it’s early
Be safe, friends, and in the hunt revel
Near land that is high the treasure is nigh
Vagueness rules and that’s on the level

Hi just now checking in again. I haven't read any of the posts since the new clues. The "brother and sister" got me thinking of the 1998 hunt in Cherokee. Wasn'

t it a brother and sister who found the medallion in an Old Navy sock. My 2 cents.

Obviously the only way you find anything is by getting out and looking. The more time you spent searching outside in a park, the better your chances are.

I already knew that  But alas I'm without my own transportation until tomorrow, thanks to avoiding kids also out running around in the snow, heh.

Heck, I've learned on the NSP and Oakdale hunts to not hardly bother with clues, just go out and search every park you can. Concentrate on the ones ya got an idea about, but that's about it.

Perhaps someday I'll find one.. Already decided I'm not meant for fame or legend, or pride/ego. So whatever way I do manage to find something, there won't be a big celebration or anything. I think my biggest thing will be deciding to actually turn the medallion in or not

Holy cow! I didn't check in here yesterday afternoon, and I guess I didn't watch the news last night either...So I am just now finding out the medallion was found! Congrats Jake!

the scuttlebut from some of the PP reporters was that the entire newsroom was talking about how the medallion had been found so early, I think it's kind of cool that people were so interested.

Where am I?

Why do we have two HuntII folders?
Wed, 01/24/2007 - 12:15 PM Permalink
mrmnmikey

yea it did.

I was refering to a DVD to give to Jake.

I wouldn't mind giving anything else I have to trent either. He asked me on the PP borad about getting him some footage and I havn't had time to get back with him. If you can, let trent know I'm trying to save stuff up to give to him for the movie and for Jake. My video is crappy quality though, so I don't know if Trent can actually use any of it for the movie, but I'm sure he would enjoy it personally as well.

Third to trade ... took Zephy's quarter, left a cheapy carabiner. Found the spot using clue 12, got the coordinates, dropped a bunch of caches around the area.

Jake came by with CH 11, and I'm assumimg some of the video will be on today.

FWIW, Jake DID work for it. I got tired just looking at where he'd been prior. Whew!

While falling asleep last night, I was replaying the press conference in my mind. Dave Young had called me on his cell phone, from the press conference, so I could hear it in progress. I live in Marquette, Michigan, and it was darn nice to be able to "be there" for all the excitement last evening!

I was thinking about Jake's friendship with Kirk, and about how gracious Jake and Rob were at the press conference. And I got to thinking about doing a poem (for lack of a better word) as follows - some attributes I'm guessing at, because I think any extremely dedicated medallion hunter would have to have such traits:

A Poem About Jake

Jake:

Analytical

Kirk's friend

Energetic

Intense

Never gives up

Gracious

Excited to find the medallion

Brave

Resourceful

Intuitive

Good guy

True Medallionator

Son whose mom is proud of him

Obsessed

Posted by Jake at the PP:

First off, I want to thank everyone who went to bat for me on these boards. You are intelligent people who based your opinions on facts. To those of you who feel I cheated, I thank you as well. It is flattering to do something that people don't feel is possible......

Now to the meat of it. Here is the story, as it ACTUALLY happened.

I wake up about 10am Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007. I realize we are out of milk, so I go down to the skyway and buy a half gallon. I come back up and have the most disgusting cereal I have ever had in my life. (Special K with strawberries) I poop, hop in the shower, and get ready to head out to the north end of Hidden Falls.

I get there, and I see someone in their car looking at Steve Worthman's Treasure Hunter's Guide (www.treasurehunt.8m.com in case you are wondering). I get out of my Blazer and open the door to grab my shovel, and the guy gets out of his car and says "Hey, how's it going. Why do you think it's here." I tell him what I think. He explains that him and his mom were there after the third clue in 1993, and I ask him why he thinks it is there. He says "I'll tell you why as long as you promise not to tell anyone." I promise and he says "The word LEVEL is in the street name cLEVELand." I didn't think much of it, he explains he has to get back to work, we introduce ourselves and off he goes.

After he left, I called Trent Tooley, producer of NO TIME FOR COLD FEET, the documentary about the hunt that will be released on DVD soon. (www.nahf.com) Anyways, he tells me "Man, they are throwing you a bone." Our conversation is short, and I hang up and start thinking. After a minute, I thought about the hunt at Conway, where the third clue says

Numbers keep score and adorn the front door

Now do your best to figure these out

A nine a five and somewhere a four

Get these right and then you'll shout

And in case some of you aren't familiar with the *history* of the hunt, the medallion was found straight out from the front door of the house at 459 Ruth Street. Anyways, I drove up to the stop sign at Cleveland, and by this point I'm on the phone with Jesse Anibas, who wrote the Treasure Hunt History book. (www.wintercarnival.8m.com) I put the phone down when I reach the stop sign, leave my car running and door open, and run to the railing at Cleveland. I look down and see fallen down trees and branches. I told Jesse I was on to something, and his famous last words were "Ya, whatever Jake." So I park my car in the Church parking lot directly across from the South gate at Hidden Falls. I walk down to a "beheaded tree" and started digging. I was at the tree and surrounding logs for about 3 hours. I had been thinking about the next place i'd go, and as I was right near a small valley, a lot of the nearby fallen down trees and branches were out of my sight. The closest one in sight was, believe it or not, the one it was hidden under. So I finally quit at the spot i'd been at for three hours, I walk down a small hill and almost fall flat on my arse. I catch myself and walk up to the log. I looked down and saw footprints. (I was misquoted in the newspaper. I didn't follow the footprints. I didn't notice them until I got to the spot.) I looked on the other side of the log, no footprints. I looked back to see where they came from. They came from the direction of the south gate. Looking back, i'm shocked that the footprints didn't get me all that excited. There was another smaller branch over the log at a 90 degree angle, and there were some vine and leaves near where the log and branch intersected. I couln't get my shovel in there so I dropped it and got on my hands and knees. I took some swipes with my right hand, then came back across the side of the log. It was at that moment I saw the edge of the block of ice.

I fumbled it briefly, but when I got control of it I immediately saw the Ford logo. I turned it over and saw the United Auto Workers logo. I turned it back to the Ford side and held it close to my face. I could tell there was something round in between the business cards. I put my head up and looked around. I didn't see a single person. I grabbed my shovel and started to run. I ran about 20 feet and realized that I may not remember where I found it, so I threw my gloves and shovel back in the spot and strated running. I put the block of ice in my pocket and held it in with my right hand. I hit the round about and pulled my cell phone out and called Trent, and as soon as I told him my cell phone battery died! A little ways up I saw 2 people cross country skiing and I started yelling "I FOUND THE MEDALLION! I FOUND IT!!!" When they got close to me the lady looks at the guy and says "Pfft, yeah right." They go by and I just kept running. After a little while, I had to stop and look at it. I just couln't believe I had it. I ended up pulling it out of my pocket about a half dozen times on my jaunt back to my car. I was directly under the HWY 5 bridge when I had to stop and rest. I pulled it out and said out loud "I finally did it. I finally did it" I caught my breath and got to my car. I

I got in, locked my doors, and set the block of ice on the passengers seat over my fleece hood, and called Trent back. I reassured him I had it and got the number of his contact at the Pioneer Press. I waited until I got onto Shepherd road and called the person at the paper. She didn't answer so I left a message with where I found it and what the cards in the block of ice said. I then called Jana (me2) at home and she wasn't there. So I left a message with her daughter and called Jesse and told him to get over to my apartment. Along the way, I hit a couple of red lights on Shepherd Road and honked at the people next to me and rolled down my window and showed them the block of ice.

Thats enough. Please tell me how you think I cheated. Ignorance is bliss............... and again, thank you all. See you next year!

It seems to me that some higher power has placed certain people here on earth with their only definitive purpose seemingly being to b!tch, p!ss & moan. They seem to have been gifted with the capacity to rattle the cages of even the most patient people. If you're not one of these more patient people, ignore them. Even if you are one of those people, your best bet is to ignore them. Because when they get attention, they feel the spotlight on them and go into rare form.

Anyone with any shred of common sense can identify these people and learns to take their rantings with the whole d@mn salt shaker. (A pinch just isn't enough.)

Bottom line to this rant, Jake, is people will always spread rumours when they feel someone is better off than them for whatever reason. Ignore them, don't play into them. Be content that whatever the truth is, you know it and they can only guess at it.
