I had a little luck in NSP. I ran into Jana and Kathy at lunch today! Decided not to go out tonight. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I told that group of guys that Cannon used to be Central and they didn't know it yesterday... they are really good diggers - I'm sure they got that thing by noon.

I don't have that kind of luck to just pick a spot and dig and come up with it.

over there - over there- send the troops send the troops over there-

so its on the Cannon Side and not the snowman side - both sides of 36 used to be Central -

pfft.

I guessed Cannon the other day. That or rotary across 36 with the snowman. Been too busy to get a chance to look though.

And today I get an email from the boss saying that I should take some time out, that he's worried I'm getting too stressed out. argggggghhhh, sure now that the hunts are probably over, yeah, I guess I could take some time off

Forget it, I'll take my time off in June for the oakdale hunt. Probably around the same time the guy forgets he owes me BIG time for all this stinkin overtime and giving up all my afterwork activities.

I just came in from Cannon Park. There were about eight people there when I left compared to the one that was there at 8 AM. If we get the Cooler Crew together we can move all the snow in the park in a couple of hours. Who's in?

I musta missed ya barefootguy. The parks getting pretty dug up. I stoped at 7:15 this morning and was the 1st one there, then the other guy showed up. He's still there, just on the other side now by the bridge. Still not found. I didn't see them other guys that were with me2 yeasterday, unless they got it and aren't saying anything. I had to leave at 7:45 to go to school, but that one dude was still there when I got back at 11. It's just after 2 when I left. Saw mucky and kitch also. Thought I would see me2, but guess not.

Hope some one finds it. I need rest now, my back is sore from raking

don't know - this is the FIRST year it wouldn't have been found by the last clue

my best guess is that the woman who hid it has never participated in a hunt herself, just always writing the clues...therefor she made a mistake by telling us it was IN the snow on the last clue- instead of early on. She has no idea that even a park the size of Alice would be dificult to go through 10 inches of snow. Like I said a couple days ago... at that point they didn't tell us to look IN the snow so with my luck I wasn't digging til they told me to. I woulda been digging days before in the right park.

She's never played the 'chuck a medallion in the snow' to give 8 cooler crew something to do for a couple of hours.

I suggest you take your metal detector over there and give the park a quick once over. thats not a joke- I mean it. I almost called you for it last night. Sounds like it's always been made of metal.

Don't bother to look anymore.

Me2 just called me. THE HUNT IS OVER!
Sat, 02/10/2007 - 9:16 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

She called some lady named Jan, who is the clue writer. Jan said the hunt ended last night before the banquet thing (noone found it) they had after the fireworks. She said all the donated money for the prize was awarded as door prizes/gift certificates for people at the banquet.

It was hidden suposedly by the snowman.

me2 chewed her out for not saying anything about how it ends on the web site, etc.

Piss poor planning and communications on their part!

poor planning and communications forsure --- it was exactly what I thought- she hid it and has never looked for it -therefor not knowing how difficult it would be to find in the snow. 5 clues isn't enough OR tell us its under the snow on clue 2 or 3.

wwwwwell, I didn't YEll at her but I thought I got my point across - hopefully. I thought I was clear enough last year just after I found it when I told them to post it had been found on-line and place a note in the main window.

I called the hotline # that turned out to go right to her. I asked if it was still out there and she said no one had found it. I asked if we could continue to look because lots of my friends were either A. waiting for another clue B. wondering if it was found because it wasn't posted on the city hall window (like she did last year) and no one was in the park looking -

she said that since no one had found it by the banquet last night so they gave away the prize in the form of gift certificates to all the places who donated to the hunt.

I told her that even the locals didn't know how much the prize was worth and the locals I talked to said it went til it was found (as it did in previous years) and they said they didn't know where the 'rules' where posted either. I said the website doesn't say how long we can hunt OR how much it's worth or if it was even found yet LET ALONE that the prize gift certificates would be given away at the banquet.

She said she was gonna get it up on the website -- that was hours ago and it still isn't up.

I asked her where it was hidden - she was a little hesitant and said it was in the snow near the snowman!!!! Do you know how many people looked in the snow near that snowman?!

Clue 5 took us further away because of it's double meaning! :frown: over there over there send the troops over there- could be to stay on the north part of Central where the plaque of troops were listed with the cannon OR go to Central and go to the other side of highway 36 where the snowman was --- geesh -Both Central Park hunts bit!!!

soooo, I get this call from medhunter...he was on his way out - I said Jake and I were gonna drive over to Roseville Central and see if we could find that hiding spot. Then Posen calls and we make it a party in Roseville for 1/2 an hour -to no avail finding the spot.... HOWEVER.... we are standing on the path when this man is walking twords us -kinda looking around-with a piece of newspaper in his hand. Right away we knew what he was doing...same thing we were! Jake says "don't tell us your looking for the location of the medallion?" Sure enough he was. Not only that but it turned out that he was a 1973 Phalen FINDER!!!! what were the odds of that? I got a pic on the camera phone I had but I don't know how to get it onto the computer. Strange morning thats forsure

bottom line: North St Paul wasn't as fun this year - and hanging out with MedHunter Posen and Jake were  :sheepish:

got this e-mail today. The time stamp says 4 pm.

Thank you for your interest in the Snow Frolics Medallion Hunt. We hope you had a great time trying to figure out the clues.

The medallion was not found this year.

As a result of the medallion not being found, the money that had been set aside for the prize was divided up into $25 increments and given away by doing additional prize drawings on Friday night at the Snow Frolics Fling.

2007 Medallion Clues and Explanations

Clue # One

ItÂ’s that time of year again and we missed you too!

The medallion hunt is back through and through.

As always, public land on Castles Site is where you need to stay

To get through the mountains of clues at bay.

This clue tells us that the medallion is on public land in North St. Paul (which was once known as Castle’s Site). It also gives us a little more information than the first clue usually does. “ The mountains of clues” is a reference to the mound of snow placed in front of the Snowman for Snow Frolics.

Clue # Two

North or South is where we begin,

The direction we go is the direction itÂ’s in.

The lake or downtown, we have recreation galore,

Castle had a 520 trade plan when he settled this town.

This clue advises us what side of the highway that the medallion is on (the south side). The “520 trade plan” refers to the original land purchase that Henry Castle made in 1872 that began his “vision” of the town of North St. Paul. Trade is a synonym for business, thus referring to the Downtown district of town.

Clue # Three

His childrenÂ’s paths cross where you need to go

TheyÂ’ve left their mark here though they were gone long ago.

Not all of them were named, just a few to be sure,

But one of the four can take you by there.

This clue lets us know that the medallion is on one of the roads named after Castle’s children. Henry Street is names after Henry Castle, and not one of his children, so the line “one of the four” refers to four daughters, which in turn narrows it down to Helen Street or Margaret Street. (Henry Castle had seven children: Harry, James, Charles, Helen, Margaret, Ann, and Mary.)

Clue # Four

Bethel did it thatÂ’s for sure

On the heels of YamagataÂ’s door.

They must have heard of our music man

To take a stab at our enduring plan.

This clue is all about the snowman. Both Bethel, Maine and Yamagata, Japan built the worlds largest snowman. However, they were made out of snow, unlike our “enduring” snowman. The “music man” refers to the speakers that are in our snowman’s black buttons. It is said that “back in the day” when the speakers worked, they used to play music that was heard on Seventh Avenue.

Clue # Five

The final day is here and itÂ’s time for the last clue

This time of year, itÂ’s Central Park for you.

But wait! WhatÂ’s that? ItÂ’s over there to be true!

Nestled in the snow, just waiting for you.

The Central Park site included the land that is now called Cannon Park. Central Park was much larger than Cannon Park, but when Highway 36 was built it took land that had been park, and the park was then renamed Cannon Park This clue first points us in that direction, but then to the public land location across the highway (ItÂ’s over there to be true). The medallion was hidden in the snow mound just in front of the Snowman at the intersection of Margaret Street and Highway 36.
