Happy President's Day New $1 coin minted today

They are trying for another $1 coin? didn't the last 2 or 3 tries go badly?
Mon, 02/19/2007 - 11:52 AM Permalink
Clue Master

I guess they're going to mint 4 a year for over 10 years for each president. Similar to the popular quarter series. They'll still be minting the old one in limited quantities for the next year as well.

oh....like that will stop the collectors from holding on to them...

Apparently we have the smallest demonation of a paper bill in the world. All other countries using a similar $1 coin say it's way better than it's paper equivalent. But the public will not know the advantages until the paper $1 bill is made obsolete. Which could happen soon depending on how the new coin is received.

A lot of people hate having coins in their pockets as is. Most vending machines won't accept them, and if ya give one to a clerk somewhere, you get an odd look like "What is this?".

I don't think making ones of all the presidents will help change things either. If you're going to do a dollar coin, choose one option and stick with it. Make it different enough that people don't confuse it for a quarter, probably have it more of a 50 cent piece size.

In short, I doubt it'll catch on.

I'd carry around poker chips..they can be made in any denomination

...if its good enough for steve wynn..you'd think its good enough for uncle sam.

I just read that there is no plan to get rid of the paper dollar, so my guess is that except for collectors, these will also be a flop.

Clue Master

They designed it to be just a bit larger than the quarter because of weight. It weighs less than 3 quarters. Plus they kept the gold tone and even added a polishing agent to keep it's sheen longer. But you're right, until the paper dollar is gone, the coin will have an up hill battle in front of it.

The coins are being made to make money. They cost like 18 cents to make, and each one that's saved gives the government a profit. They're cleaning up on the quarters, and a dollar would be 4 times that.

The dollars are accepted in many vending machines, and they're heavily used by transit.

yup....like stamps and stamp collectors (and pennies, kept in huge volume in jars everywhere) the dollars will be a great money-maker for the mint, and unlike the bills, the coins won't need to be reprinted every few years (which costs big money and eventually makes bills a loss in the cost per printed bill).
