I thought it would be nice to have a spot for us to share our memories of Dave, just like we did with Kirk, and we can get them passed along to his family.
Eags
You guys! This is just wonderful. I'm crying so many kinds of tears right now. Thank you for thinking of this and making the contacts, Love4Vino!!! And thank you, in advance to everyone who is going to make this happen.
Vino/Sam, OMG, you are such a gem! For you to take the initiative to call Scott and get the ball rolling on this...from CALI, no less...well, it just shows what a "do-er" you are (as if we didn't already know that!)...
I think that within a year after you move back, we're going to have to re-name ourselves the Cooler Crew, Inc.! As for now, in your absence, what do you need us to do to help get this off the ground???
That is super cool. I'm very sad that I can't make the funeral, but I would be totally up for a fund raiser/comedy night. If there was a lot of extra money (beyond the bench or Santa memorial or whatever) it could go toward something Dave loved like a flight school scholarship or travel expenses for a comedy club up-and-comer or something like that.
im writing this sitting top afloat. so forgive the short hand. dont know how much extra we would have but thought it would be awesome since the reason Dave was able to pass amongst friends was Amys funeral and her was there to show his support to Brad would be additional $$$ to Ali's college fund.
its also good billing when looking for donations to put this together. a memorial for a friend and his friend.
too bad my cult isnt established there yet. this is right up their alley.
Great idea on contacting Scott Vino! You're awesome. I could tell from his story that he cared for Dave quite a bit. And Scott's a decent guy from what I've heard, so this is a good pairing. I'll do what I can too.
This is the point in the evening when Whitney stole a little piece of my heart. She was quite a caregiver the rest of the evening. What a sweet young lady ~ you should be very proud!
If Scott makes it to the funeral on Fri - He is really going to try to - anyone who goes, please make it a point to talk to him, and tell him that you are also supportive of this idea.
I am supposed to call him the following week (prolly tues, cause Mon is a holiday and Im working on my 2nd house) to start laying the ground work.
I'll let ya'll know what I will need from peeps who are closer there as I get the ball rolling with him. Sounds like he has a ton of contacts etc etc etc. So I'll see what I've got, and set up a timeline etc. etc. etc.
Is it possible to have a thread for this for planning - so that as things come up - we have a forum for it?
First off, thanks to everyone for sharing their memories, stories and pictures of Dave. It was quite an emotional afternoon trying to get caught up in the thread.
The one thing that sticks out in my mind about "Santa Dave" is the fact that you could go a year in between seeing each other and he'd continue the conversation that you had started the year before. He had one heck of a memory and was a very smart man. He proved that with the trivia game at Majors last Monday.
It still seems so unreal that we were sitting there talking about his plans for the future, retirement and his land ~ and in a moment it all changes. He was lucky to be surrounded by friends having a good time till the end.
Rest in peace DDY! You've been called home. You will be greatly missed and have touched so many lives!
I've lost track - is anyone already taking care of ordering flowers for Santa Dave's funeral?
If so, to whom do I send my contribution?
I know we are planning to do the fundraiser memorial thing and that is so fantastic and awesome, but I'm guessing we would still be doing flowers? And if so, someone will need to be reimbursed.
I was going to donate a bunch of the flowers from Amy's funeral but I might be pushing it now. They're still in somewhat decent shape but I don't think they'll last much longer. :frown:
Vino, calling Scott and getting the ball rolling on this idea is so impressive. Thank you
Putting a bench in a park is a great idea, and I think Terry suggested Como. I'd like to offer up an idea, I know Dave loved the State Fair, the Minnesota State Fair Foundation has bricks and benchs too. I don't suggest doing only the fair as we couldn't visit it year round, but might be nice to have both if we could swing it.
Thanks to Ian for getting ahold of me. I was on vacation--oddly, just passed through Worthington. Just got back today.
I don't have much to say that hasn't already been covered in the previous pages (and done better than I could).
Dave is one of those characters that even the most skilled novelist couldn't create. It would take too much imagination.
The thing I found most interesting about him is the number of places I'd see and hear him--outside of the Winter Carnival. I'm not too active in things in the off-season, so for most you folks, I see you at the end of January each year.
Dave, you'd see at the State Fair. Or at K-mart. Or, you'd listen to KSTP, and hear him call in. One day, I was listening to the Home and Garden show, and one of the hosts said "a short man who looked like Santa Claus just snuck past security and dropped us off a dozen donuts." I knew it was Dave, and I could just picture him. I ran into him a month later, and he confirmed it.
I've met quite a few people, and I've never met someone who was as good of a listener as Dave Young. Most folks listen politely as they wait for the chance speak. Dave really was listening, and you always got the impression that he really enjoyed it. Special talent.
The fair would be awesome to do a bench at as well. Can someone look into costs for that?
I love the Como idea. I was actually looking at my THG last night at the different memorials they have in that park, and many of them are truely unique. I think if we play this right, we can do something a little grander than a bench there - more of a Santa Chair type seat or something.
I don't think I'll have any problem selling the uniqueness of the memorial to Como - just need to find the perfect 'seat' for the job so to speak.
Once ordered, I will let anyone who in interested in chipping in know where to send their contribution.
Leftover money, if any, will be donated to the larger memorial fund for Santa Dave (bench(es) and whatever).
Here's what I'm hoping someone else can do:
I think it would be fun to bring along a little Santa figure to add to the flowers. The flower shop I spoke with didn't know where they would get one of those at this time of year...but she thought something 12" or less would be the right size.
And also, can anyone get or make a replica medallion to send along with Santa Dave???
I'll post more once I know more details about the flowers.
I may post the same info several times, because I know its tough to slog sometimes, and I'll want everyone to have a chance to see the info.
Does anyone know what happened to Dave's car? I called Majors and they didn't know if it was still there or not. I could drive it to his sister's if that's where they wanted it.
If I remember correctly, those benches are moveable. Meaning they set them out for the fair, and then most are moved to storage for the rest of the year.
So I suppose we could make sure it gets placed by the food court every year by finding it at the fair and moving it. It could be a little bit of a hunt to boot "Find Santa Dave's Bench!"
I just looked it up on a map... "Drive: 218 mi (about 3 hours 18 mins)"...Don't think I can make this. Wish I could, but Penny wants to head north friday and this just wont work.
Cluey - I don't want to jinx it. I asked a lot of people to do a pretty heavy thing, and I'm waiting for the call. There's been a lot of bad news here and I don't want to get people's hopes up.
I'm grinning from ear to ear. This would have to be the most fun fund raising event I've ever attended.
I think that within a year after you move back, we're going to have to re-name ourselves the Cooler Crew, Inc.! As for now, in your absence, what do you need us to do to help get this off the ground???
Becksie - I'm glad others think this is just simply wonderful!
I have not heard anything back from Dave's friend, Jerry Marin. I will see what other avenues I might be able to find to ensure he gets word.
I heart sunny today
I really liked Santa Dave and i miss him :frown: :asleep:

My mom and I ran into Santa and Green at the fair, last year as a matter of fact....

Pray a little too.
