Seriously, everybody cross your fingers and pray to the lord of your choosing. If this works, it'll be legendary and everyone here will be remembered.

I have them, but I don't give people's numbers out without their direct consent. It's a common courtesy I'd hope people would extend with my contact info.

And while we're posting about needing phone numbers (in another thread) I'll just put this out there:

NOW is a good time to update your emergency contact information and figure out a way to carry it with you!

Billfold, car visor, medic alert jewelry, whatever...

The day before Christmas 2004, one son was on his way to Minnesota, the other son was on his way to Texas, my niece was on her way to Duluth - those three people are my emergency contacts - and I was almost taken out, at a red light, by a fully-loaded double logging truck that ran the light.

Got me to thinking - who would know who to call? - who would know I have two dogs at home and how long would it be before someone could get to them?

I don't have family here, and I realized it would waste a lot of precious time if someone dealing with an emergency on my behalf couldn't find that kind of info.

So - take a minute, right now, please, and jot some of those important names and numbers down and carry them with you.

Thank you.

we were at the er at fairview southdale a few weeks ago and they have these little signs up in the waiting room talking about "putting your phone on ice". you program a number into your cell phone with the name being ice. evidently paramedics are trained to look for this entry, which stands for "in case of emergency" and call it.

don't think I'm going to make it to the funeral, I didn't realize just how far away it was, andy will be in school on friday and I have to be home when he gets here. Looks like vino's been working hard, this is going to be great!

I'm going to write it down here...

I want to be cremated...and I want my ashes dumped at the headwaters of the mississippi...

even if its illegal...do it...

that way i'm going to be spread all over the waterways of the world.

(if for some strange reason this doesn't happen----I'm going to be extremely ticked off)

also put a space at the beginning of the "ice" entry and it will be the 1st number on the phone list of your phone.

I did that ICE thing a while back on the advice of my brother...I have three of them entered, actually. (2 kids cell phones and Texsis) I was telling my mom that I want to be cremated, and she's like, "Do you have that written down?"...so now she's recruited my dad to bring forms to Texas for me to document my wishes. Nothing any of us want to think about, but a will would certainly be a good idea so that if anything happens, the situ isn't more stressful than it needs to be.

This is a long one, but please bear with me - its important stuff for each of us to consider!

The death of a loved one often brings us to look at our own mortality.

What a gift to our surviving loved ones to have our affairs in order!

In addition to writing down important contact information, please set a date - RIGHT NOW - to get your legal documents created. If you already have them, its probably time for a review, to make sure everything is current.

Before you decide on a will, you might want to explore the option of having a Living Trust. There are many advantages to this, such as avoiding the expenses of administering a will, and having immediate access to the estate (as opposed to waiting usually at least four months with a will, often much longer without a will).

A Living Trust costs a bit more upfront, but has the additional benefit of being able to be acted upon even before death. This may be even more important for a person who is single, divorced or widowed.

For example, if a person were to end up incapacitated, their estate could be managed by their administrator. Most people think that having someone else's name on their checking account is sufficient, and that may help, but a Living Trust ensures that your administrator can see to the care of your pets, pay your bills, file insurance and tax forms, and help prevent a health disaster from also becoming a financial disaster.

Or let's say the person had the opportunity to travel extensively - the Living Trust would allow the administrator to take care of certain critical tasks, such as filing taxes, on their behalf.

Upon death, the Living Trust is distributed by the Administrator with no time contraints unless you put them in place.

For example, my niece is my Administrator, with my local Bank and Trust as backup, in case she would be unable at the time. My two sons get pretty much everything, and I can keep updating my instructions as to who gets my items of sentimental value, my funeral and other final wishes. My Living Trust states that such a document exists in my home, and my administrator and sons know where that is.

I also have an amount set aside in the Living Trust for the care and feeding of any animals I might have at the time.

At the same time, part of the Living Trust includes having a Living Will done, stating what you would - or would not - want done, and under what circumstance; and naming those you'd want to make medical decisions for you should you be unable.

Everything I have is titled to my Living Trust - my real property, car, bank accounts. My beneficiary on insurance and retirement accounts is my Living Trust.

My kids are restricted from inheriting the entire amount until they are 35 years old, but can be given amounts for basic housing, basic living expenses, and education, etc., before that.

I'd never heard of a Living Trust until after my husband died - my neighbor, who was also widowed at a young age, told me about it.

An attorney could tell you if a Living Trust is right for you and your situation, but it works beautifully for many people. A lot of legal documents can be found online and completed on your own. I chose to pay the money and have an attorney do it. That way, it got done and it was as easy as something like this could be. And I have a lot of peace of mind knowing things are in order.

My husband died without a will. Most things were in both our names, but our camp was in his name only, since he owned it before our marriage and we "hadn't gotten around" to doing anything about that.

Probate, in most states, takes several months, at a minimum. Mine took the minimum (in Michigan) five months - a long time to have assets tied up if you needed them! A friend of mine is still trying to finalize probate and its been three years.

So, in addition to getting those critical phone numbers where someone can find them, now is a good time to do something about these other matters.

Eags, everyone -

I can't tell you how true Eags words are. My Grandmother was very very specific in her will her wishes for me & others (She even listed certain items - like her watches, a chair etc)

Her 4th husband had his own will (cause they were in their 50's when they married) and had stuff he specifically left to people etc. etc. etc.

I still have lots of legal crap, cause he tried to take her property but without her will being so specific, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on)

I don't have any heirs, but I have a lot of property, and a sizeable investment portfolio etc - thanks to corporate america. I wrote an initial will - just incase, the person who agrees to take all my animals and keep them together, while providing a good home for them, is going to be one lucky S.O.B.

It's a F'n nightmare. My Uncle who was supposed to be the executor (who is flush with $$) refused to cause he didn't want to spend $ on attorney fees (and the guy has 3 on retainer at all times for other stuff - one is even a friend of the family etc. etc. etc.

I keep telling myself tho - that I can't cry too hard, I'm the lucky one who gets to find all the treasures in the house & learn so much about people who I never really understood.

But its a lot of hard work - really hard work. After finding the Dead Mice the other day - I've now dreamt about them the last 2 nights. bleech. I hate mice. Maybe more than I hate snails - and that is a lot.

So I'm sure you all heard about the probation officer who was assaulted. Please keep him in your prayers as he clings to life.

I worked with him in the early 90s at Wilder. His life partner is a licensor for Wilder's foster homes.

He has the most marvelous voice. You could feel it resonate through the floor and table when he spoke. A true gentle man.
