Santa Dave Memories

Submitted by ares on

I thought it would be nice to have a spot for us to share our memories of Dave, just like we did with Kirk, and we can get them passed along to his family.

Terry

Car gassed up. Memory book and the two newspapers for the family in the car. We are set to roll in the morning.

Still don't know which way we'll go - but we we'll figure that out in the morning.

Yahoo maps gives the directions through Mankato and says only 3 hours. That would be a shorter distance in the same time.

Sometimes having a crystal ball would be good.

Thanks for the cell number. Hopefully we won't need it.

I know Mom has a cell that she'll have, but I usually call her house number and she has it forwarded to her cell. Being tomorrow will be a different situation, that might change, but do I know her real cell number? No.

I am anxious to get there and meet his family. Thankfully the sun will be at our backs both ways. It has always been one of the nice things about going out to see Inks folks...we go west in the morning and east in the evening.

I wish we had more time. I'd scoot up to Willmar and see my father-in-law.

Did anyone happen to print this thread or show any of Dave's family how to get in here? I know TV was going to copy off some of the memories but I also know that I found it very interesting to read through the thread about my wife. You guys are the greatest to say the least!

CM - out.

For those of us who are with the Cooler Crew in spirit today - if you can - at 1:30PM CDT let's just take a moment of silence. I will light a candle at that time - please join me in doing that if you can.

We just got back. Awesome day. Laughter, chuckles, tears and time spent with super people.

We will be heading north as soon as I can think about driving again...in about 15 minutes.

FYI - Scot Hanson was not there, but had left a message with DDYs cousin Margie about some roast they are planning to do sometime this coming week. He was going to get more information to her. She has my email and she will contact us.

Heading north now. I truly wish you could have all been there. It was an awesome day and experience.

Have fun!

it was a very good day to be with friends. I enjoyed my time with fellow CC members and the camraderie of that - DAves family - sister and cousins were all gracious and happy we showed up for Daves Day

It was like terry said both Happy and Sad.

Dave was a special guy who will be missed - cherish and embrace other coolers in here and out on the hunts - they are all unique, special and important in their own way.

I am proud to have hung out with all (many) of you and the other 10 people (cooler crew members) i got to know better today in worthington and on the drive.

Thanks for being the cooolest.....

Rest in poeace and laughter Dave

Some say love it is a river

that drowns the tender reed

Some say love it is a razer

that leaves your soul to blead

Some say love it is a hunger

an endless aching need

I say love it is a flower

and you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking

that never learns to dance

It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance

It's the one who won't be taken

who cannot seem to give

and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely

and the road has been too long

and you think that love is only

for the lucky and the strong

Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows

lies the seed

that with the sun's love

in the spring

becomes the rose.

KCOGRN - Do you have pictures you printed out for me saved?

There is a possibility that we could put all the memory book into a bound paperback. Eags will have that information sometime in the next couple or few days. It would be nice to include the photos.

My best memory of Santa Dave... Or memory of the character of Santa Dave...

After Jake had found the medallion, waaaay late into the night, a few of us DDY included went out with Jake to see where the medallion was hidden.

Jake had mentioned that it was pretty far into the park, and a rough walk. Dave still came along. He was a little (a lot) slower than the rest of us, so I slowed down to walk with him for a while. We talked for a while, stopping about three times so he could rest a bit. Me2 was on the phone behind us and finally caught up with me and Dave. Assuring me he would be alright, we sped ahead a bit since we were out of visual and verbal contact with Jake and crew. We got to the spot, took some pictures, looked back and there was Dave, a good 1/8 mile or so back, sitting and waiting for us on our way back. We got back and walked back up that long, steep and slippery road back up to the cars.

He was old, and got tired easily, I just never really thought about it at the time. But looking back (funny how this stuff comes to you) he wasn't coming along for the medallion... He came along for Jake. From the top of the hill looking down, it did look dangerous. I thought for sure I was going to slip at least once. Still he came.

An amazing man... I can't say I have ever met anyone so genuinely caring as him, nor do I think I ever will again. He was is one in a million.

Thanks Dave. For being you.

So does anyone know the cemetary Dave is at? I just figure if I'm ever in the area I'd like to stop by and visit.

It's the Worthington Cemetary - and he is buried at the Young family plot - signified with a Young family stone.
