I'll show my coworker for taking a couple days off. We'll see how long I let her sweat it before I fix it.. bwah ha hahaha

That will be funny to see your co-worker with their head sideways trying to do work!

You should tell them you have to go check something first before fixing it and tell them to keep working till you get back.

Heh, it's the only reason I'm going to go in early Monday for.

Hmmm, seems to me it just gives them an excuse to lie down on the job. :pbpt:

Nah, trust me, they'll complain about it.

(they like surfing the web at work)

That was a joke. As in, they could read the computer better lying down on their side.

See just cause I know a thing or two about computers doesn't mean I'm the smartest guy around

I cringe even writing this.. I need confirmation that I really need to do this, or to see if its someone messing with my computer.. I hope its the latter, because my life is on my laptop.

Heres the msg I get when I start her up:

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2: ST96812AS-(S1)

WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure is imminent.

Press F1 to Continue.

eek.... :worried: :worried: :worried:

Terry

I don't know about the message - but I would certainly back up anything you want to save in documents, spread sheets and pictures.

KC0GRN

hard disk 2? Hmm..

But yes, SMART failures are very, very bad. The good news is many new hard drives have problem detection like SMART built in, so you know when the drive is going to go bad (note going to, not could).

I'm not sure how much data you have on yours. Is it just documents, or music and video files too?

If it's just documents, buy a USB thumb drive, the largest capacity you can afford (I believe they're made up to 8 GBs now). And copy all of the stuff you don't want to lose onto it.

If it's a lot of data (music and video and whatnot), see if you can buy an external hard drive. They can be expensive, but it all depends on what it's worth to you.

Whatever you do, do it NOW. Because that hard drive is on it's proverbial last legs. You're actually pretty lucky you're getting warning, most times they just go bad without telling you.

Beyond that, the laptop is salvageable, just have the hard drive replaced. It's a pretty simple fix to do on your own, or I would hope a place wouldn't take you to the cleaners to do it.

I guess that brings up one final idea, if you buy a replacement hard drive, you can make a mirror image of your current hard drive and put it on the new one. That would require someone with the technical knowhow to do. Any reputable computer repair place can do it. Or I could, if you care to buy me the most recent copy of symantec ghost

Well.. I have a ton of music/video/pic/document files on it... like I said.. the thing is pretty much my life. All my contact info, all my music, all my pics, everything.. I just dont want to put more into this laptop than I paid for it.. :worried:    :coolfrown:

a new hard drive would run around 200 bucks considering it's a laptop drive. It all depends on how large your current hard drive is. I have no idea how much you spent for the laptop, so it's hard to say if that's more or less. You could find a used or cheap one on ebay, but I wouldn't recommend it, as you usually get what you pay for.

Hard drives and fans are the most common things to break down in a computer. It's one of the main reasons everyone stresses the importance of backing up your data.

This question is probably pointed more towards Joel. Have you heard of SpinRite? One of my friends sent me a copy of it, and I want to see if you've heard good or bad..? Let me know... thanks!!

It's a good drive recovery tool. It won't work miracles though. Basically if you have a hard drive that's gone bad enough to give you smart errors, it's a big bright warning light telling you that a hard drive failure is imminent. No amount of software can fix a hardware failure. Still, if you got corrupted data, it can help retrieve it.

how do I open a file marked with a " .art " ?

:frown:
Thu, 07/05/2007 - 5:21 AM Permalink
KITCH

1st:

In AOL : Settings/Internet Properties check "never compress graphics."

AOL Method

You can Convert a .art image file to the proper format by usingAOL.

Download the file.

Determine if you can open it with your graphics program if not its probably in .art format

On the Aol Menu (top menu) select FILE then OPEN

Search for the .art file you downloaded.

Click the file to open it. AOLs File Viewer window opens and the picture is displayed.

Once the file is open simply save it in the proper fromat.

Aols file Viewer handles Gifs, Jpg, bmp, as well as other formats.

Windows Internet Explorer Method

You can Convert a .art image file to .bmp by usingWindows Internet Explorer.

Yep the same program you surf the internet with! And then covert the .bmp to a smaller .jpg file.

First download the file and determine if you can open it with your graphics program if not its probably in .art format. If the files extension is e.i. mydlfile.art its easy to tell but many times you'll find the files extension point to it being a .jpg or .gif but its not.

To Convert first change the file you could not open extension to .art (i.e.) myfile.jpg which you downloaded wont open ??? so change the name to myfile.art Note: There is a very useful free graphics program that I use that can determine if the file is really .art format and change the extension for you when you try to open the file with it called Irfanview. Irfanview however can not work with these files but will change the extension for you. Many graphic applications can not handle this .art file format.

Open Windows Internet Explorer

Select FILE then OPEN

Set the File type to search for to .art

Find the .art file you downloaded and open that file.

The .art file will open in Windows Internet Explorer.

Now save the file BUT on the Save window select File type and save as .bmp

From there you can convert the .bmp to a .jpg file with a graphics program like Irfanview or Windows Paint program found normally Start> Accessories> Paint

just got this in an e-mail :frown:

well I don't like Flickr cause it turns my pics sideways

grrrrrrr

Dear Yahoo! Photos user,

For some time now, we've supported two great photo sharing services: Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we've decided to close Yahoo! Photos to focus all our efforts on Flickr — the award-winning photo sharing community that TIME Magazine has called "completely addictive."

We will officially close Yahoo! Photos on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to move to another photo sharing service (Flickr, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Photobucket), download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only). All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible.

I went ahead and sent them all the flikr. Hope I like it. I did see that there is an option under preferences to have your photos automatically rotated. Maybe you should check that setting and see whats set on your acc me2. Might fix your sideways pics. Some cameras set witch way they should appear also, so also check your setting on your camera.

how hard was the transfer from yahoo to flickr???
Thu, 07/05/2007 - 1:02 PM Permalink
mrmnmikey

pretty much a few clicks. If you go to Yahoo photos theres a link to click there. But after I did it I went to flikr to check my options. They default to showing your e-mail adress so I changed a few settings. They actually didn't move the pics yet, I'm on a wait list and they tell me when they are moved. All the info was transfered over from yahoo. All I had to do was pick a user name and upload an avatar (optional). You don't even have to show your real name or anything. Really easy.

mrmnmikey

Just checked my e-mail. Its done already.

Hi again mrmnmikey -

Yee har! All your photos have been imported from your

Yahoo! Photos account to Flickr.

FYI, we know you had 1407 public photos and 157 private

photos over on Yahoo! Photos. We've marked everything

private because Flickr works a bit differently to Yahoo!

Photos. If you're happy to make things public, you can use

a handy little tool we built to make the photos you had

public on Yahoo! Photos public on Flickr as well. Private

photos will stay private.

And, to say welcome and thanks for choosing Flickr, we've

set you up with 3 months of Flickr pro for free. That means

you can enjoy unlimited everything until 5th October, 2007

(unless you choose to renew it, of course, for just $24.95

a year).

Just sign in to get started: http://flickr.com/signin/

Welcome!

Regards, Team Flickr

Let me know what you think of the pro version. Although, I suppose you won't know the difference since you've never used the standard program.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do and how to do anything. I finally did figure out how to add you as a contact.

Is the map thing a proversion thing? It looks pretty cool. You can see where the pics were taken at.

Yeah, I like that too. I've done that to a number of my building shots. You can do that in edit mode of the individual photo. You have size choices as well.

some features are not working for me. I tried to look for your bldg photos on the map and they show up as someone elses.

My slide show thing gets me a black screen with nothing on it. Other buttons I try say my browser is not supported, even though I have the newest IE.

I'll keep plying with it.

I rebooted and I got the slideshow thing to work now. I think my computer was screwing thing up somehow. I was using the map thing to look at a photo from Checkoslavakia or something and then tried to see yours, and the pics of the dome and 225 came up, but said they were from the guy in Checko. When I clicked on the picture it took me back to the pic I was looking at on the guys profile and not the one of the dome. Weird. Reboot seemed to fix it though.

I'm gonna try posting some pics from filckr in the photo thread by hotlinking and see if it works.

I double checked my yahoo photos backup on my jumpdrive.

Thanks for the info, I've now deleted all my yahoo photos (I wasn't going to wait for them to do it). I've been playing with flickr for a while anyway, and have my own website to host on also.

Just to be thorough, I downloaded and wiped out my yahoo briefcase too. I guess I just never know when these online services might decide to delete my data anyway, so it's always good to have a copy myself.

I chose photobucket but found out (too late) that you can't batch upload...so what do I have to do? Upload them one by one? That would be stupid! Does anyone know of a workaround? or how I can go to Flickr or something instead? The photos are gone from Yahoo now... :frown:

Silly question - How can I paste pictures into my posts? Now that I am getting more use to...

not a silly question...just kinda tricky to explain...

its basically an HTML code..

you want to use < and > instead of { and }

{img src=http://www.a-pc-geek.net/images/geekman.jpg}

this is a trick called hotlinking

link to more on the topic of hotlinking and what it looks like in the code...

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inline_linking

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

another way is you use the attachments right under your message box...if that doesn't work you need to edit your post with the same html coding to get your photo to show in the post.

La última vez

Bésame, bésame mucho

Que tengo miedo a perderte

Perderte después

Quiero tenerte muy cerca

Mirarme en tus ojos

Verte junto a mi

Piensa que tal ves mañana

Yo ya estaré lejos

Muy lejos de ti

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,

Because I fear to lose you,

I want to have you very close

To see myself in your eyes,

To see you next to me,

Think that perhaps tomorrow

I already will be far,

very far from you.

Anybody know how to install a new hard drive as the primary drive?

My cousin has a computer with a bad primary hard drive. It was originally win/me and she upgraded to XP. The computer has a secondary drive thats still good. What all has to be done to get this up and running with the new drive?

I'm asking because I may know someone that needs a computer and might help them out if my cousin doesn't want it, or help my cousin get it back up and running.

There's a jumper switch on the hard drive you have to set. If you're lucky, there's a diagram on the drive itself. If not, try looking it up online.

Basically a jumper switch is two or more stiff wires that you put a tab over to make an electrical connection.
