Is that building right on 65? I think I recognize it from when we used to go up to Big Sandy. As I recall, it was pretty much the only building in Grandy.

I remember that Roseville tornado too. My mom was living where she had the vantage point of watching the wall cloud move through. Freaked her out a bit. We ended up going and picking her up so she wasn't alone.

I couldn't believe I was driving through town while sirens were going off. I was sure I was certifiably nutz at the time.

Power killed out here about 3:40am. The wind and lightning actually woke me up. That was pretty crazy!

I wanted to record the sound of it, but I don't have any good equipment for that... Maybe I should invest in some.

Just got an email from our son. He has been house sitting for a friend that is out of town until January. There are trees blocking alleys and streets to the house, the power is out and there is a tree that missed the house, but did ome damage to a stair railing, a yard light and is blocking the front sidewalk. He got over to our place and is going to bring some saws back to work on getting that tree blocking the sidewalk taken care of.

For great sounds of nature, I have several of the CDs from terraaura.com Some of it is nature sounds set to music. Others are simply nature sounds. It was several years ago I first heard of this place when Jason Davis did a feature on them. They showed the recording equipment they use. Fascinating stuff.

Was at the Roseville Target at 10 last night and the sky seemed fine.

I sleep on the upstairs sleeping porch in the summer. It's screened with canvas shades. The storm woke me up and by the time I was able to drop the shades I was soaking wet from the rain blowing in.

I'm sure the SSP Relay for Life was cut short by the storm. I don't think those shelters would have withstood that storm.

Saw a lot of tree limbs down this morning. One in my alley and some along 5th Ave.

ok, soooo, I havnt been sleeping well for a while now ... I musta got some rest last night cause all I remember about a storm possibly coming through St Paul was when I was reminded by Sarah just now....

She says "I couldn't sleep last night"

I ask "why?"

she replies with "didn't you hear that storm last night"

I said "no" (as I thought about what was said in this weather thread).

she says "you didn't hear all the hail?"

I said "oooh, I DID hear the hail, I vaguely remember hearing while dreaming!"

she laughs and said "at 3am it came down so quickly and so hard that I looked outside and it wasn't hail! It was ACORNS!"

we both laughed. we talked about this only because she was BORED! so I told her she could go sweep up all those acorns! We've had a lot of them fall this summer. I guess MORE at 3 am this morning!

I think the Farmer's Almanac or something like that says that when an oak tree has a lot of acorns it means a long winter ahead.

Our power went out just as I hit the post button for my link above. I've just got in now to see if it actually posted. Funny. "Here it comes" and BLAM! There is was. :ooh:

I did tape some audio and video of that storm. Pretty long strobe affect. Went on for quite a while.

Whitney just got back from ComoTown

she says there were trees down everywhere in Como Park and a road closed to downed trees

interesting idea about the long winter -

When I mentioned all the acorns to mark the other day...he said that we've had only one other year this bad. I didnt ask him which year he thought that was. I'll ask him. There are thousands of acorns all over the yard.

soooo, we may have a good snowfall before the hunt in January. hmmmmmmmm

Becks wanted me to go to the Irish Festival on Harriet tonight with her but you can't cut through that humidity!!!! wow!!! we may go tomorrow afternoon - I was gonna hit her up for discin too but if its anything like today? uuuuh another day will have to do.

BTW, I saw a ton of acorns on the ground at a park in Cottage Grove today.

Also, I lucked out big time. We were doing a couple caches at Hamlet park, while watching the skies turn a deep pinkish green color and seeing a bunch of lighting. A police squad was driving down the trail we were on, not quite sure what they were up to, but we decided to leave. No sooner had I gotten in my car it started to rain. On instinct, I decided the skies looked bad enough I was going to take shelter under an awning, so I found a US bank building and parked in the drive thru banking area (it was closed so what's the harm?). As soon as I pulled in, it started to hail.

Someone was watching out for me today, and last night, given those storms.

hey kc, Ive had to park under a bank awning for hail before too! funny. In my case I had a rental in Iowa for 1 night and decided "what could go wrong in 1 day" so I didnt buy the extra insurance. geeesh, luckily everything turned out alright. It hailed today where you were in CG? wow - we just got a little rain here - wonder if becks or those 'cute' guys with kilts got rained on down on Harriet Island?

Did you capture the sky with your camera? sounds pretty.

the thunder sounds cool out there.

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU CAN USE THUNDER TO TELL HOW FAR AWAY A STORM IS?

You can use the gap between the lightning and the thunder. The flash travels at the speed of light - effectively instantaneous for human purposes. The rumble travels at the speed of sound, about 760 mph depending on conditions.or about 4.7 seconds per mile. So for every five seconds between the flash and the bang, the storm is about a mile away.

We got some pretty nasty weather up here. I was home alone with our dog last night and didn't realize the storm was coming. I was in the lower level of our house and looked up to see the wind going really fast and rain starting to come down heavy. I had to run upstairs to close our windows. One door slammed so hard that part of the door frame cracked and was sticking out. In the same room, the screens got blown out, and there was water droplets at waist-level in an open closet that was 10-15 feet away. Our place is fine though, and no other real damage. No trees down in our yard. Power went out, there was a lot of debris on the roads near us and a number of big trees down.

The weather was just crazy. The wind was going so fast. They talk of sheets of rain, but this was like a blanket of rain. It seemed like a huge firehose just firing full blast, down on us. Elissa was at a meeting and was fine herself, just got to come home to a dark home. Power was back early this morning. Our puppy got scared as hell, he ended up under the bed in his room. I had to coax him out with some toys, and even then he didn't want to come out. We're all fine, just one heck of a show.

we were camping near monticello...

had TONS of lightning...

steves grandmas camper/motor home was hit.... popped a tire....

a tree right next to it was split...

the fire ring at our own campsite was struck...

that was fun as hell...

scary, but fun...

It storms up there pretty bad, atleast once every year when we camp..... but this was the worst we've seen in a long time...

I drove out to the bluff over downtown St Paul. Sky was cloudy but the Cathedral and downtown were clear. There were other people standing on the bluff enjoying the show of the clouds lighting up- at that time there was no lightning coming directly down. All of about 20 seconds, a man goes running past me to his car... I look over and you can't see the Cathedral and then all of downtown quickly disappears and down came the rain. The thunder bolts came after. I didn't get any good shots - still learning what my camera can do...

WARNING: my day in somewhat blog form

It was finally a beautifully sunny day (we've had way too many cloudy days lately- talk about bringing a person down)

I was dying to get outside! and craving the Minnesota Great Get Together and cheese curds terribly. I got my secret button, bought stuff at the gift shop, hugged a chipmunk, mmmmmmmmm that first cheese curd just melting in my mouth with my eyes closed! getting fudge at the grandstand, checking out the news booths and 93x, running in to a couple of people  , watching the talent show and a really good band later in the evening, cotton candy, did lots of other things too, I finished off the evening there by riding the skyride while looking at the night lights of the midway and an almost cloudless evening with a full moon.

It was almost a perfect day. I was so glad my oldest, Sarah, said she would go with me (won't get too many more days of her WANTING to spend time with mommy).

I get home and crawl in to bed to watch/fall asleep to a documentary I wanted to see on CNN.... only to be woken by this storm! It sounds like a doozy. I come online to read the weather report in this thread and no ones online ??? WHERE ARE YOU GUYS. I need my weather report damn-it! yeah, I know, turn on my tv or look at the top of this thread, yadda yadda, rain and thunder....thx

Might have to go do coffee and then catch the bus!
