bwahh, apparently I'm no good at romantic then. Actually it'd probably be a good date if I was a teenager, people get a little wiser when they get older, heh.

Taking a gal into the woods to look for an ammo container is a nice idea for a date too KC. Just be sure she understands what geocaching is first.

What you'll do for love. When I was in high school I'd get up at 4:30 every morning to help my boyfriend feed calves and clean out their stalls and replace the soiled bedding with new. Then come home and get ready for school.

I don't think I could have ever scammed a girl to help me do that...

And you walked uphill, both ways, to his house every morning, then walked up a third hill, without shoes, to get to school, right?

No, he picked me up in his car. :eyeroll:

He raised the calves and sold them to the yards for veal to help pay for college. I actually enjoyed the work. But was sad when the calves were sold. Couldn't even name them for that reason.

I was talking to my niece on the phone a couple of hours ago (would have been about 2:30PM CDT) and she told me that, as we talked, she heard what sounded like an explosion. She said it shook the house and that she and other neighbors were all outside looking for anything obvious going on. She didn't see any smoke or hear sirens or anything at that time. She lives in West St. Paul in the Charlton/Emerson area.

Did any of you in that area hear anything?

I didn't, but it reminds me of an explosion in the same area in the early 70's I think, where a propane tank exploded at an apartment complex and three firemen died. They're buried next to each other at Riverview Cemetery.

We lived on the far north side of SSP at the time and I was on the couch and heard and felt the explosion almost three miles away.

I've heard electrical transformer explosions that bring people out of their houses to see what happened.

I found the story.

Killed January 11, 1974

Shortly before midnight January 11, 1974 a tremendous propane explosion that demolished an apartment complex and killed four people rocked the City of West St. Paul. Those killed were West St. Paul Firefighters Erling Armstrong, Richard Neikirk and Captain John Heuer. The other victim was Mrs. Dodge Petersen the apartment caretaker's wife. We will always remember our lost brothers

I remember that!

I was living in an apartment on Marie Avenue at the time, and heard and felt the explosion. I was up late - I think playing "pong" - when it happened. I recall it was a bitterly cold night, too, well below zero.

The former Divine Redeemer Hospital went into Orange Alert mode for that. I started working at DRMH a couple of days later. Being a small community hospital, the firefighters were all well-known to a lot of the employees, especially the paramedics. Such a tragedy.

When I found out what and where it was, I was amazed that I actually felt the concussion that far away. My mother had a friend who lived in the complex and lost everything. They had been evacuated before the tanks exploded.

Did you live around here when a water heater in a house on 16th and Wentworth blew up and went through the main floor and out the roof and ended up across the street in the neighbor's yard? :ooh:

Found that story too.

In 1993, a 40-year-old 200 pound water heater exploded and shot through a floor, ceiling and roof like a missile, at a home in South St. Paul, Minn. The explosion shot the tank 150 feet in the air. It destroyed the home, slightly injured two people and killed the family dog.

Which department did you work in at Divine Redeemer?

I don't recall the water heater explosion.

I worked in data processing and filled in for admitting and switchboard/ambulance dispatch from 1974-1979, then went back part-time after Mags was born (1976) and worked on a casual basis after Drummer was born (1979) until I started nursing school in 1982. I later worked OB/GYN at DRMH after it became part of HealthEast and re-opened their OB unit. That must have been around sometime during 1987-1991.

that actually happened in the 90's...

I think I was in junior high when that happened.

Yeah... I'd probably go again... if the wait wasnt so long...

I thought the woods part was the best part of it...

the house just didnt last long enough for my likes.

We went to trail of terror tonight...

Had a blast there...

it reminded me of how spooky world used to be, before they closed down....

they even had some of the same characters walking around there - the giant frankenstein guy, among others....

they had like 5 haunted houses for us to go through as many times as you wanted...

one was like a maze of sorts, and was really cool.... there was maybe a half hour wait to get into that one, because it was the biggest and most popular one...

the hayride was fun....

the only sucky part about tonight, was trying to find our way to the parking lot...

my sister got the directions from Trail Of Terrors website, and they didnt bother changing the site, to say that one of the entrances was closed for some reason, and moved down the highway...

so we drove a half hour out of the way for nothing, and then had to come back...

but it was a fun night....

I definately want to make that one a yearly deal, and possibly do it again this year with more people.....

I remember a blast in Minneapolis in the 70's where us kids were allowed to walk around the area afterwards and grab as many small toys as we could. I guess the garage was full of boxes of those little store entrance vending toys. It was a free for all for us kids who got there first. The cops let all of us roam free even though we were inside the police tape. It was a trippy site. No real burnt structure. Just what looked like a total explosion that put itself out right away. Windows were blown out for blocks.

I wonder how one finds a story that old?

Or the year. All I know is that I had to be 5 or 6 years old. Not sure. But I do know it was a big deal back then (or at least it was in my eyes) Newspaper and TV reporters everywhere. I was fascinated.

But I was torn between grabbing as many toys as I could because of all the other kids starting to arrive or watching a live news story from the actual site.

I ended junior high in 94-95...

the market is called the Phoenix market.. and they actually are next door to the place where the building was...

that spot is now a community garden

That happened probably in 1999...maybe 2000. Someone who was part of the Cooler Crew at that time lived in that area. We were all concerned until we heard he and his family were okay. The Cooler Crew came to be in 1998 so it had to be after that.

Or something like that

Let the "pre-black friday" black friday shopping commence:

http://bfads.net/Adscans

no, they're not official. no, you won't be seeing wally world's ad there until the 19th because they're being jerks. yes, they should be considered rumor until they appear in the newspaper on the 22nd. however they've been accurate for the past couple of years now.

Another good site is

They also email you when a new ad is up. They also have a discussion board. Some people are crazy, talking about lining up at Best Buy at noon on the wed. before. I have also heard stories about some mall stores opening up at 1 am this year. The season is upon us I guess.

cm, i would imagine the big buy and circuit city ads will be showing up within a week or so. they've at least said they have no plans to go after those who post their ads early.

mikey, if you can picture an ass-kicking contest where its a bunch of one-legged men participating, i'd be the one in the middle.
