The key is doing it in thirds...dividing and deciding....
Place three golfballs on each tray of the scale.
- If the first weighing doesn't balance, remove all the balls from the lighter side, and place one golfball from the heavier tray on each tray. The heavier side is the heavy golfball, but if both sides balance, then the ball from the heavier tray (from the first weighing) that was not weighed in the second weighing is the heavier one.
- If the original two groups of three balls do balance on the first weighing, remove all of the balls from the trays, and place two of the remaining three unweighed balls on the trays, one on each tray. If one is heavier, you have found the heavier ball, but if those two do balance, the remaining unweighed ball is the heavier one.
ok, I didn't even TRY to figure this one out because I knew someone else would do it.... and as I began reading posens answer I quickly got lost in it anyhow --- excellent deciphering posen. you must have a scale and 9 golf balls in your garage.

I come in darkness, but fill the mind with light.
I bring enlightenment to some, while gripping others in the hand of fear.
With me it can be a journey of inexplicable joy and sorrow.
What I will show you will often be unreachable.
Journey with me and what you see may haunt you.
Journey with me and you may never want to return home.
Journey with me and you will never know when it will end.
What am I?
he finished, he accidentally left a $100.00 bill on his desk. But when he
returned for it a short while later, it was gone. Only two other people
could have seen the bill. One was the maid; the other was the butler.
The maid told him that she had hidden it for safe-keeping under a green
book that was on the desk. But when they looked the bill was not
there.
The butler said he had found the bill where the maid had left it. He had
placed it inside the book, where he thought there was less chance that
somebody would find it. He had written down the page numbers so that
he would not forget them. The bill was between pages 35 and 36, he
said. But when they looked, there was no money in the book.
After Mr. Ellis had talked to the maid and the butler, he called the
police. He knew who had taken the money. Who was it, and how did
he know?
heavier then the
rest. You also have a balancing scale. Can you use this scale two times
and only two times in
order to tell which ball is heavier?
<edit> two things - 1st, Posen is a bitch   and 2nd, I need to learn to type faster :eyeroll:
