2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

Hmm.. maybe I'll end up going...

I could see them unveil some lame one and then I could start booing :goofy:

Nah, but it might be fun to go, I haven't been to one before.

Its a pretty fun thing to see... I've gone to a bunch of them...

I want to try and go again this year...

we have our yearly family cookie exchange, that same day, though... so I dunno what we're going to do yet.

Mr. Med Hunter

think this will be the first button unveiling that i'll have missed in the last 6 to 8 years. :frown:

always liked the weekday lunchtime unveilings in the skyway ~ much easier for me to attend.

Kinda glad I didn't make it to the button unveiling.

Yuck! I can't even pick one I'd want to wear....

I ought to suggest to them they should create a "Hunter Edition" button every year. At least that way they could have the normal themed button for the year and one that I'd be okay wearing... It'd be a nice way to separate medallion hunters from a crowd at the carnival as well...

I told you they were lame!!

KITCH

lame isn't the word...unless its a lame horse that you want to kill...

I'd say "rancid"

The reasoning "so we were told" was to capitalize on the Skating Federation Event happening at the same time... yet they didn't secure any spots for us to sell to this crowd!

Hence why Becksie and I are not selling. I'm just getting buttons as needed (like the other night for the Crew).

We will have Tax Collector Pins for sale this year - for those button collectors!! They are actually kind of cool!

I'd say commercialized to promote an activity that only by coincidence is happening during the carnival. Its not even an official carnival activity. They didn't do this when the NCAA Hockey Championship was going on at the same time.

I think if they were hell bent on promoting the US Figure Skating Championships (and I can't imagine what possible benefit they get doing that), they should have limited it to one button and had three others promoting actual carnival activities in which they actually had an interest.

Sainted and Tainted. Who's up for it?

...they did this b4

during the NHL all-star game they designed a button....they couldn't get it approved from the NHL...

I've only seen 1 button...but if I do I'm going to try to get my hands on it.

Hrmm.. I guess I'll buy a set, but I won't get an extra one to wear this year. I might be interested in a tax collector pin though, that sounds cool.

FYI -

On-line Button Registration is now working. I tried too and got the same error so I contacted the office - don't know what they did, but it's working now...

You go girl!

Yeah, the button design SUCKS on a thousand different levels! When they showed us in the Tax Collector meeting, I blurted out "STUPID!!!" (oops, I guess I DID say that out loud!). They had the coolest design that incorporated both the Carnival and the Skating 'chips (design 8? I think...the one with the Treasure Hunter) but didn't pick that because they think they'll make more money on the selected design. Not from me, they won't.

So, I suppose you're wondering how I REALLY feel!
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 3:19 PM Permalink
Clue Master

Do they really think the design of the button matters if someone will buy one or not?

As ugly as all 4 of them are, are there any of us that won't buy it because of the lame design? I doubt it.

Collectors are collectors. This year will just go down in history as the lame ass figure skater year is all.

Oh, and the same year that Cluey finally found the medallion and dedicated it.

I got a free button for being a SPFHF member (OK, so that was $30) and I'll buy one button for Texsis, but that's it. And it's only to register for the hunt and other prizes.

I'm not really a true collector, but if they had picked a better design I would have bought at least 2 full sets. So instead of spending an additional $36 for 2 sets, I'll spend an additional $5. I guess we'll see how it turns out.

KITCH

it could say "i hate st. paul" and I'd buy one just to have the registration code...

and they know it...

might be why a treasure hunter could be a rare thing...

I think the old Tax Collector group had a large say in what button design was chosen. If the WC really wants to have a lot of people selling buttons, they should try that route again.
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:05 PM Permalink
Clue Master

You might have a point with your earlier post Becks. Even those who do collect the buttons might decide to only buy one instead of four to cover this year. Kind of make a stand type of thing and say no to ugly sets.

Terry

I happened into Snyders this evening after work and bought only 2 buttons - one for me and one for Inks. I usually buy the full set. Not this year. Those buttons don't say winter carnival to me. There is more to the carnival than figure skating.
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:12 PM Permalink
Clue Master

Is there even figure skating in the carnival at all?
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:14 PM Permalink

THANK YOU, TERRY!!! EX-ACTLY!!!

There's skating at the Landmark Center, and it's really fun!!

There have sometimes been rinks for those who wish to skate - but nothing of the caliber shown on those buttons. Stupid. I only bought the ones I did to get them registered.
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:15 PM Permalink
becksie

plus, as I understand it,the Ice Skating Federation does not allow us to sell buttons at the venue! Unbelievable!
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:16 PM Permalink
becksie

I'm glad I decided to sit out of button selling this year. When I go to the next meeting, I'll be sure that they are aware of the opinions I'm hearing because...you know, they chose the button they did because they felt it was going to make them the most money. If button sales are poor, I'll feel bad for the Carnival because those lost revenues will hurt. On the other hand, maybe they will learn a lesson or two about picking the design.

That should have been the deal breaker right there. Sad

They could have chosen a set of different colored fire hydrants and had more significance being that they line the parade routes. :eyeroll:
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:24 PM Permalink
becksie

well, of course they claim that they didn't know that when they chose the design...dumb asses

And that's even AFTER they dumped the hockey thing for the same damn reason. Sheesh!

I wish we had the money to make a few hundred (thousand?) of the other design and we could wage button war and see what design sells better. THAT would be sweet revenge! I believe that people that are interested in the Carnival want a Carnival-themed button, and I don't think it takes a rocket-scientist to figure that out
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:29 PM Permalink
becksie

it's lip service...unfortunately for them and their reputations, it's very easy to see through...
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:30 PM Permalink

how much are they??

would it be that much cheaper to buy a 4 pack?

mucky

wanda

me

fourth??

sorry..I'ze pissy about it

Sadly, I think those in power have forgotten what the Carnival means to the people of Saint Paul (and Minnesota). I know that all of this costs a lot of money (even beyond volunteer hours), but to lose sight of the true Carnival spirit by trying to capitalize (through the button design) on an entirely different event is...well, it's just reprehensible. IMHO, of course...
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:37 PM Permalink

I think they are $5 each or 4/$18. They were 4/$17 last year...
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:38 PM Permalink

KAT was going to charge me $18 for the four even though I gave $20. So you'd save a couple of bux anyway

 $4.99 for a registration code..

$.01 for a crappy hunk of tin with plastic on it.

how about Klondike Kate pin-up calendars?
Mon, 12/03/2007 - 4:51 PM Permalink
Clue Master

Grab a four pack from the counter at SA and go back by the pop. Write down the codes and seal it back up saying that you didn't want them because the design sucked. This way you get your codes and still are able to make your point about the lame design that might make it back to the manager.

"Its not even an official carnival activity"

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

I wish I woulda known this when I was in the elevator with Kate Kelly this afternoon! I woulda said something. WC isn't even SPONSORED BY OR SPONSORING THE ICE SKATING?

Sooooo, does this meen that the winter carnival events brochure won't even mention the ice skating at Excel?

I remember a few years back when everyone didn't like the buttons- musta been 2002, 03 or 04 - people hated them. I remember it was a 4 pack.
