2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Submitted by KITCH on

Medallion Hotline 651-228-5547

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

2008 Treasure Hunt Rules:

Contest Details and Rules:

Treasure Hunt clues will be published in the Pioneer Press and on TwinCities.com beginning Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. A new clue will appear daily through Thursday, January 31, 2008, unless the medallion is found prior to that date. Read the daily clues to search for the Pioneer Press medallion hidden on public land in Ramsey County. The medallion will not be hidden on the State Capitol grounds, at Como Zoo & Conservatory, under any skating surface, on a golf course, under artificial turf or at any construction site.

If you find the Pioneer Press medallion, promptly return it to the Pioneer Press, 345 Cedar St., St. Paul, to qualify for the $2,500 initial cash prize and $1,200 of groceries (one $100 Twin Cities Cub Gift Certificate per month for 12 months). Win an additional $2,500 for bringing in all of the published daily clues from the Pioneer Press and providing them along with the found medallion.

The Pioneer Press also will award an additional $5,000 to the finder if he/she is a registered 2008 Winter Carnival Button owner and has mailed an official entry form postmarked by Monday, January 21, 2008, to the Winter Carnival office.

If the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion is not found by 11:59 pm Thursday, January 31, 2008, the Pioneer Press reserves the right to terminate

the Hunt and donate the prize to a local charity.

The Pioneer Press reserves the right to discontinue the Hunt at any time if public property is destroyed.

The winner will be required to execute and return a Certificate of Eligibility and General Release form within 24 hours of notifying the paper that the medallion has been found. If the winner is under the age of 18, the Certificate must be signed by his or her parent or legal guardian. Non-compliance may result in disqualification. Any income tax liability is the sole responsibility of the winner.

All participants agree that the Pioneer Press, TwinCities.com, Cub Foods, and their respective affiliate companies, parents, subsidiaries, advertising representatives and agents will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by participants for any injuries, losses or damages of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, misuse or use of the prizes or participation in this contest.

Except where legally prohibited, by accepting prize, winner grants permission for the Pioneer Press, its partners, and those acting under its authority to use his or her name, photograph, voice and/or likeness for advertising and/or publicity without compensation.

At the end of the 2008 Treasure Hunt, Treasure Hunters may take the published (clipped from paper or printed from TwinCities.com) clues to any participating Twin Cities area Cub Foods store for a chance to win a $500 or a $300 Gift Certificate from Cub Foods. Clues and entry information must be dropped off at participating Cub Foods by Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. A random drawing will be held on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, and winners will be notified by phone.

No purchase is necessary to win. Photo copies or online printouts from TwinCities.com of the published clues will be accepted. All contest rules and decisions are final. interesting add that it won't be under a skating surface. My first guess is it'll be a park with a skating rink...

It could just be a reaction to people ruining ice in previous hunts. I doubt that there would be any rules made in light of where the medallion is/will be hidden.

just remember when it was at Como in 2003

the rules stated it was NOT on the state capitol grounds

and a clue refered to a dome

I dont get why they change the rules every year

I can see having base rules and adding to them

like keep Harriet and the Capitol grounds off limits and add to the list but not include or exclude different things each year.

the rules coulda said to stay safe away from the edge of cliffs but it doesnt - instead if mentions ice rinks?

maybe it has to do with staying away from Excel because of the ice skating thingy.

instead if mentions ice rinks

I'm guessing that clue #1 or 2 will say something about the figure skating championships taking place on and in the city of ice. People look into every word as we know and many might chip away at whatever they see.

My mom actually found the Cottage Grove medallion covered in 6" of water in the middle of a pond. :eyeroll:

It was in ice in Battle Creek a couple of years ago too. But not buried in it. Do you think they hid that one in a pot hole and filled it in with cloudy water? That would be pretty tough.
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:20 AM Permalink
OT

No, it was frozen in ice in the middle of the creek and they used food coloring or something to make the area blue. Clear ice. Must have melted a spot, put it in the hole and added the water.

What year did they stop using the treasure chest?

they're not cracked, just bruised and the doc cant do anything, but I got some good pain meds     :pbpt: :pbpt: :ooh:

Nice persoanl Joe there Mikey

..... and can you hook a sista up with a couple of those????
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:40 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

I was thinking the same thing last night. Why do they rewrite the rules every year? I still wonder if Vento is good to search or not. They planted a lot of small tree seedlings down there and I'd hate to see them wrecked. Maybe they'll have an artical in the paper like last year with more off limit places?
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:41 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

wasn't the chest only used in '53?
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:46 AM Permalink
Brassmonkey

It seems like the rules are basically the same every year except a few small changes. the main off limit areas are the same (Golf Course, Golf Greens, State Capital, Como Zoo and Conservatory) but then they add the small extras which is slightly confusing. Perhaps it is because of certain damage reported from the prior year?
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:48 AM Permalink
OT

It was a chest when they first started the hunt until sometime in the late 50's. Who is it that had a relative that brought the chest to a PDG? Was that Zephy? Maybe that was the last year it was used and why they were given the chest.
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 10:01 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

zephys relative in 53 I think. I'll check Coolercrew.com
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 10:03 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

Looks like they used a chest untill 1958? They mention "chest" in the clues until 1958. Then they say they've hidden it in a new way. Looks like they had a late hunt that year in Feb

We apologize for the hunt's delay, But we've hid the loot in a different way. To find the coin you must be clever, But shall we say "Better late than never."
Tue, 01/08/2008 - 10:09 AM Permalink
OT

Found it. 1952 - 1957 it was an actual treasure chest. Again, thanks to ares and www.coolercrew.com. I remember the chest attached to the bottom of the mail box in '56 and hidden in a hollow log in '56.
