LOL. Reminds me of a Cheers episode where Diane's date instantly counts the letters in any sentence spoken:

[Diane and Walter have just returned to the bar after a weekend-long date]

Walter Franklin: [to Diane] Why don't you introduce me to your co-workers. I'm sure they'd get a bang out of this.

Diane Chambers: [obviously embarrassed] Oh, I don't really think that...

[Sam approaches Diane and Walter]

Diane Chambers: Oh, hello, Sam. Walter Franklin, Sam Malone.

Sam Malone: [as the two men shake hands] How do you do.

Walter Franklin: Ten.

Diane Chambers: [in answer to Sam's confused look about what Walter just said] Uh, he's able to tell you instantly how many letters there are in any sentence you say.

Walter Franklin: Sixty-six.

Sam Malone: That's quite a gift.

Walter Franklin: Fifteen. Been at it all weekend.

Sam Malone: How many days did it seem like?

Walter Franklin: Twenty-four.

Diane Chambers: Listen, Walter, I have to go to work now. Thanks again for a lovely weekend.

Walter Franklin: Two sentences, thirty and twenty-eight.

Diane Chambers: Stop doing that Walter.

Walter Franklin: Nineteen.

Diane Chambers: [immediately and angrily] I mean it!

Walter Franklin: Seven. Really, that's enough of this now. I better get going. Goodbye, Diane. Nice seeing you, Sam.

Sam Malone: Yeah.

Walter Franklin: Four.

Sam Malone: By the way, Walter...

Walter Franklin: Fourteen. Ah, yes, Sam, what is it?

Sam Malone: How was Diane on a scale of a hundred?

Walter Franklin: Twenty-nine.

I'm still worried about those boundaries that cm posted ...

so everything falls in that green area?

nothing will be on the west side of 94 from downtown Minneapolis?

and nothing will be east of 52/35 from downtown St. Paul?

thanks for all your confirmations david -

I'm getting nervous and excited about your hunt that Im already tired now

Allison Wonderland

Aye, that is correct. The Winner's Ball and the final destination are indeed different places.
Thu, 01/10/2008 - 1:19 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Yes, everything in the hunt falls in that area. The Winner's Ball is actually slightly out of it, but it was the best place I could find.

I'll just post this here:

Greetings to all of you who have signed up to participate in the first ever Twin Cities Treasure Hunt,

The hunt starts tomorrow night and it should make for a very interesting adventure. YouÂ’ve already heard a lot of the details about the hunt, but IÂ’m sending this email to confirm the rest of the things you will need to know.

First off, the event starts tomorrow night at 7pm with a social hour at the Como Park Mason Lodge in St. Paul . It is located at 1044 Front Ave. which is a block east of Lexington and a little over a mile north of 94. ItÂ’s just south of Como Park near both GabeÂ’s by the Park and Half Time Rec. For the social hour weÂ’ll be serving some light appetizers, but the main goal is to give you time to get your team assembled and scout out the competition a bit. As we get close to 8pm, IÂ’ll ask for a representative from each team to come forward and at 8:00 IÂ’ll hand each one a puzzle packet.

The packet will consist of 12 puzzles and 12 pictures. Each will have a symbol on them and the picture and the puzzle that have the same symbol will go together. The puzzles will not be in any particular order, so you wonÂ’t need to worry about keeping them in order. As you look at each picture, it will have a black banner on it covering some writing that would otherwise appear in the picture. The writing underneath, and only the writing underneath is part of the final puzzle. If only part of a word is covered, then only the covered letters are important. ItÂ’s unlikely (though perhaps not impossible) that youÂ’ll be able to tell where the picture was taken based on the picture itself. ThatÂ’s where the corresponding puzzle comes in. If you solve the puzzle, it will either tell you where the picture was taken, or give you a pretty good clue about it. The puzzles are all different. Some may be harder than others. Many are on par with a crossword puzzle in that even once you figure out how it works, you may have to work it a bit to get the actual answer. I would say an hour per puzzle would be the standard to try and beat. Thus it would be good to have multiple people working on them. ItÂ’s possible you may get stuck on some. Because we donÂ’t want anyone to get frustrated and give up, it will be possible to get hints. No hints will be available for the first 12 hours. But starting at 8am Saturday, you can call me at 651-276-5230 once every two hours to ask for a hint on a particular puzzle.

Once you have solved a puzzle and know where a picture was taken, the next step is most likely to go there and find the original subject of the shot to see what is missing in the picture. All of the items are in plain site so you shouldnÂ’t have to move anything or open anything to find it. While some will be easier to spot than others, it should be sufficient to just walk around and look for it. Some of the items though are indoors, and they are in places that are not open 24 hours a day. For those you will have to wait unless you can find some other way of figuring out what is missing in the picture. You are not to break into any places or perform any other unlawful activity to get the answers. Doing so will be grounds for disqualification. All locations are within a search area that is defined on the east and west by the two downtown areas and on the north and south by the city limits of St. Paul and Minneapolis .

Once you have all the pieces of the final puzzle (or maybe even just most of them) youÂ’ll have to figure out how they relate and they will reveal the location of the final destination. When you get to the final destination, I or one of my assistants will be there. You can identify us as we will have a glowing orb sitting on the table. You will then be shown a list of items and you will be asked to choose one. The team that chooses the most expensive item will be the one that wins. To clarify, the winner is the one with the most expensive item chosen, not necessarily the most expensive item available. Once you have chosen an item, you may change your choice, but you may only change it to items that still remain at that time. At that time you will also be given the location of the WinnerÂ’s Ball which starts at 8pm. Every member of a team that finishes is invited to the ball which will include free pool and free darts. The location also has food available for purchase as well as a full bar. The team that makes it to the ball with the most expensive item will be declared the winners, given $300, and a trophy for each member.

Each team should provide me with a phone number to reach them in case there are any irregularities or clarifications that need to be issued to all teams. If you have any other questions about the hunt, let me know.

Okay, I'll be checking in frequently Friday evening on into the wee hours of the morning I'm guessing. Feel free to ask me questions. All information is confidential within the parties I'm speaking with. So none of that "what's team A doing?" or "what did team B come up with for this?" nonsense, as I won't answer questions of that sort (iow I'm playing fair, not favorites nor a spy for your team).

Allison Wonderland

I forgot, did your team have a specific name Redbear? Or maybe I'll have to go back and look. Of course now I'm tempted to root against you lest I have to go to the trophy engraving place and ask to have one made for "Cheap Hooker". :pbpt:

Good luck to all the teams. Sounds like a real fun game.

I would love to come celebrate with the teams and congratulate the winners, if that is possible. Maybe someone could call me and tell me where the celebration is at so I can join you at the Winners ball?

I do not want to play pool or darts - just hang out and celebrate!!

Redbear

Do we need a specific team name?
Thu, 01/10/2008 - 2:42 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

It would help so that I can have announcements like "The Spider Monkeys have finished" along the way. Right now the names I have are:

The Spider Monkeys (Cooler Team)

Bloodbath and Beyond (Work Team)

Pease in a Pod (Singles Club)

The other ones I have pet names for like:

Redbear's team (Cooler Team)

Team Cookie (Cookie Bakers)

Not Just Jake's Team (Cooler Team)

The seventh team crapped out on me.

As for non-participants at the Winner's Ball, what about this? Would anyone feel cheated if other people came to hang out, but they had to pay for their own darts and I charged them $1 a game for playing pool? On the one hand, I think the party should be an exclusive spoil for those who participate and suceed. On the other hand, those same participants may enjoy it even more with more of their friends there to congratulate them. Any thoughts one way or the other?

AW are you saying That people can come after the fact and be at the party but should have to pay a few dollars so that way you can make a few more bucks for the lodge??
Thu, 01/10/2008 - 3:02 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

No, I'm just trying to think of a way that seem equitable to the participants. Some people will have paid $20 or more to be on a team and will have had to have gotten through the whole hunt to earn the right to go to the Winner's Ball and get the free stuff. So suppose that was you, would you be bothered if some people just showed up and got all the same benefits for doing and paying nothing? I'm guessing some people might feel that way even if they don't want to publicly say so. The few extra dollars won't make a significant impact on the bottom line of the event. I'm just trying to think of what might seem most "fair". I don't really want to tell non-participants they absolutely can not come, but I still want to make it worth something to those who participated and finished.

our team name is "Finders Keepers" not "not just jakes team"

and when we win, I know I wouldn't be the least bit upset if the other teams came to our ball.

It is a valid question though. If one of the items has to do with a loaf of bread for example, the price of a loaf of bread could vary a lot. So I'll tell you how much a loaf of bread costs. But you'll still have to figure out how many loaves of bread are actually involved and what the total worth of them all would be.
