2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

exactly my point, I don't want to sound like a pessimist but this is ridiculous.

I know everyone gets pissy afterwards, and I guess I'll wait for the explanations before getting too peeved. But I thought most(not all) of the noodles for Keller/Phalen, BC, Conway, Kellogg, and even Highland were solid and not too much of a stretch.

Nobody's probably going to read this until tomorrow...

My DSL went down this afternoon and didn't come back until a couple minutes ago. I was down a Mounds and saw a couple BIG guys scrambling up a hill to their car - about 7:40 pm.

Reminded me of a defensive lineman recovering a fumble and scrambling for a TD. They ran all the way from the firepit area to their car at the top of the hill hear the old shelter.

I heard one of them say "I think I got Something" and got discouraged. Spent about 2-1/2 hours around the Tot lot and firepit area - I was glad to see lots of 'Gammas' and Kidlets running around with their parents. Kinda surprised to see no 'finder' has posted yet.

I personally just dont like the woods as a hiding spot. How can you say that it can be found with solving clues. The clues will only get you to the park, but nowhere near some obscure plateau in the middle of the woods.

Some years we never got to the right park. I remember the year it was at Kellogg. Our hunting group were sure it was at Harriet Island. We laughed at those poor folks up at Kellogg. Then it was found in a White Castle box.

Other years we have been at the right park early and never left.

We wanted a long hunt and got one.

Last year, the hunt was over in 3 clues. The second hunt went further, but was shorter than the usual 12 clues.

This year Inks and I finally settled on Mounds Park and were fairly certain.

I'm happy. I managed to noodle myself into the right park.

Lucky the photos were taken before the leaves came out.

Can make out the trails through the tree.

Can't zoom enough to see the "fallen tree and the old rusted drum" though. At least might be out of the wind a bit back in there.

I thought this was the year that we had enough snow that we could get out of the woods. Guess not. Well at least one good thing came out of this. The Medallion was hidden in one of the parks I rated with 4 stars prior to the hunt, so that streak remains intact!

I think the hider should really mess with people's heads - tie about 3 dozen colored ribbons in the woods in various locations then give directions to the next colored tree - ONE CLUE AT A TIME.

apparently there are two barrels out there.

one is flattened.

the other is barrel-shaped.

there are two people on the conference call who are at the barrel-shaped barrel now.

sounds like there are a lot of others around them, but not seeing any other Cooler Crew right now.

Mad Dachsund..... They probably found a geocache. There are a lot in that park. that happens all the time they get excited when they see a man made container in the woods, so they leave before figuring out what it is.

clue 11 looks like clue 12 so the new clue 12 must be the coodinates...

sick of woods and clues that bring you to a park but never narrow it down....

I sure hope a cooler picks it up tonight

Just got back from mounds - Thanks to leelebel did I spell that right? anyway, thanks to her conference call set up i was one of the first 5 or 6 down what I now know was the wrong trail. We did find a shelf that I remember somebody said they had cleaned off - and found a gutter cylinder (drum?) next to it, and that sure seemed like it was it, of course we didn't have the clue in front of us, so I was going from memory - my g/f had written down part of the clue - I thought I had heard something about a barrell, she insisted it was a tree, anyway, we gur around that culvert for a while then left, I kinda figured it had been found by then, (I still didn't know we were on the wrong path, but so were alot of others) We did find a gas can in that culvert, but couldn't reach it - we talked about that all the way home...

Good hunt, but it doesn't seem as fun when you cant decifer clues to get to the right spot - it is just a mad rush

100's of cars still there when we left about 1/2 hour ago.

Here is the story, as it is at 1:30AM:

College student finds Treasure Hunt medallion in Indian Mounds Regional Park

Pioneer Press

Article Last Updated: 01/30/2008 01:28:39 AM CST

Andrew Burke, a 21-year-old college student from Knapp, Wis., found the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion shortly after midnight Wednesday, winning himself the $10,000 in prize money.

The medallion was found in Indian Mounds Regional Park under a fallen tree. It was concealed in an invisible tape cartoon. As soon as he found the box, Burke said he knew he had the medallion. He quickly spirited the box out of the park, past hundreds of others searching in the night.

"Excited, stoked," was how Burke described himself right after Pioneer Press officials confirmed the medallion to be authentic.

It was the second year Burke and his sister Jessica French, of Baldwin, Wis., took part in the medallion hunt. The pair typically began searching at 9 p.m. each evening and would spend six to eight hours hunting.

The clues published each day in the Pioneer Press weren't always clear, he said.

"A lot of clues still don't make a lot of sense to me," Burke said.

Despite below zero temperatures hundreds of people were in Indian Mounds park searching late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, Burke said.

A freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Burke said he can use the money to help with paying for his education. He is studying hotel, restaurant and tourism management.

Look for updates on the Treasure Hunt at twincities.com later this morning.

Congratulations to Andrew!!! He put in his time hunting. So glad it wasn't someone who just waltzed in at the last minute.

Can someone invite him for Sunday? Would be great if we could meet him at the park before the RHB, and hear his story. Then show him some Cooler Crew hospitality at the pot luck!

I hope Nick was able to get his car started and that all Cooler people didn't get TOO cold out there tonight.

It was awesome to be on the conference call. I think I was on for about 2.5 hours - LOL. It was exciting to hear reports from the field. Kind of like being at the press conference last year, courtesy of Santa Dave and his cell phone.

How about the unpublished clue 10 or 11, I think what we got tonight was clue 12...

That was such a long Clue 11. Some are wondering if that wasn't Clues 11 AND 12, to get it over with since it was so frickin' cold out there.

I agree tonight sounded like a clue 12. I wish they would of warned us first. We would have gone down for sure.

Posted at PP board by finder's friend.

It's smaller than I thought! It has kind of a blue-hue, and my buddy says it's a new design.

It says "over fifty years" and has a treasure chest on it.

I hope he calls/brings it in soon, too.

WAY TO GO BUDDY!

Thanks, again, for the conference call. It was nice to talk to some of you, at least, and for keeping my dad company while I hunted. It was nice to meet New Daddy, too. I'm glad it was found tonight and glad it was a fellow Wisconsinite:) but upset that it was ONLY his SECOND year!!! That's a heckuva lucky guy:) And, how did Ian miss using that downed tree for a cache. That tree's HUGE! If it was found in that exact tree, I will be amazed that it hadn't been found before tonight. Well, at least Andrew will put the money to good use.

I just got back from mounds. Thanks for the call Leelabell!!

Me and the Zephster parked exactly in fron of the path the clue led us down.

However, most went down the wrong path. There are 2 paths and there were 2 barrels with a barrel on each path. Regman found the right path. Its the smaller path just west of the path with the rocks. Its NOT THE ONE WITH THE ROCKS! The correct path has a tree 300 paces down that the path goes under.

The wrong path has all the cut wood by it. We didn't figure it out untill we saw regman. (Thanks Regman!)

I'm starting to agree with mucluck about this hunt. There is no friggin way anybody could ever find this medallion in the first 10 clues. This sucks. I just wasted the last 10 days looking for something thats impossible to find. :barf: May as well wait till clue 11 to even start.

I'm not sure about anyone else but I'm relieved it's not going to the 12th clue. I think that would've brought a lot of injury. The path was so slick and narrow.

Also, this year, I don't feel so bad about it being found by someone else. I wasn't anywhere near IM for the majority of the clues and even tonight, I headed down the wrong path. Thanks to New Daddy, I was directed to the correct one. In years past, I was upset because I was "this close".

Now, the only way I'll get upset is if the CW has lame explanations for his clues. We all tend to over analyze the clues and I think the CW should respect that and use it to his advantage.

It's funny that it was found in a tape box. We were speculating on what it would be in and we thought either a 3M scotch tape box or a Mason jar lid box -- they are about the same size and just big enough to fit the medallion.

I played a sick joke on my sister yesterday when she went to her car to get something I hid a scotch tape box in the spot she was digging. She found it and started shaking, dropped to her knees, and freaked out when she shook it. She opened it and found a roll of tape, and said "YOU BITCH". I howled and almost pissed myself laughing. She was mad for about 2 minutes then thought it was so hysterical she did the same thing to her husband when he showed up later.

well that was a pretty fun hunt it actually wasn't that cold being down in that narrow hallow, well atleast there was no wind. My daughter always gets so upset when it's found it's almost like she wants to keep looking even though she knows it's gone!
