2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Submitted by KITCH on

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

The other park I kept going back to was Harriet. Can't tell ya how many times I went back over the clues with that park in mind. One meaning of the word bower was anchor. That anchor kept us at Harriet the one year it was at Kellogg in the White Castle Box.

There were other clues that could have fit there as well - but not the later ones. The last time we were out there was on Saturday.

Oh! And that infamous clue 5 contained the word pen. For a minute I thought of the jail on Kellogg now abandoned. I dismissed that as fast as I thought of it.

I thought the bridge thing could have been the view of the bridges from Kellogg, Cherokee and Mounds. Stupid way to word that clue I think.

Let me put it this way. I probably never would have thought Kellogg had I not run into Kitch and Muckluck there on my way back to my car from the paper. They told me a few of their ideas about Kellogg and at first I was like "Whatever". But when I couldn't fit the clues to any other park, I considered Kellogg and it was the only place that fit all the clues (Clue 5 STILL does not fit Mounds). When I went back there I was more convinced I was right. But I didn't think it was fair of me at that point to take something that had been told me in confidence and tell the world or even the whole board here. Kellogg is a small park after all and those who got their first deserved a chance to explore it thoroughly. Yet at the same time I was convinced it truly was the park and that everyone else was off in the wrong park so I didn't really want to say nothing at all either. So I said as much as I thought I could rightfully say which was "I think you're all in the wrong park and you should maybe think about how the clues fit somewhere else." But it didn't seem like my place to tell everyone what that place was.

The end deal is that hardly anyone was at the correct park until what - clue 8 or 9?

And then there was still doubt.

Clue 5 does fit IMP if you expand on the Star of the North School.

Go to the school website and you see the reference to Kaposia.

Kaposia Village was on the East bank north of Pigs Eye Lake. That gets you to the IMP / BC area.

My reply:

I'm not terribly impressed. Clues could've been done better. Next year: less obscurity, more word play. Clue #4 and Clue #5 can burn in Hell. I seriously suspect Clue 10 and 11 (and possibly 9) were doctored to cut the hunt short because of the weather.

By the way: God --- LOVED the weather this year! A little less wind, perhaps?

We are just back from Obb's. Funny how as soon as the hunt ends, the posts here dwindle to just a few. In a couple more days, after the Rehash Bash is over there will be posting going on in other threads and we'll put this hunt to bed.

This is something I've decided we need to do for the next hunt:

1. Forget about solving clues except trying to find street names.

2. Once you get more than one street name, you are likely to be at a park.

3. Now ignore any clues about anything except streets.

4. Find the biggest downed tree in the park with the right street names and dig like crazy.

5. Find the medallion and throw a big party for all your cooler friends.

I think the deer got scared and headed East. The vegetable farm in Woodbury off Upper Afton - near BC lake - had 6 or 7 of them grazing in the field last night at sundown. Kind of close to the road, too.

Too funny about Clue #8. I just read the explanations. Last night, after venturing down the wrong path, I came back to my dad's truck and told him that I thought the "buck" referred to all the deer in the area! I slid down quite a few hills last night, intentional or not, and there was a lot of scat that tried to slow me down! Who knew I had figured out part of a clue? Too bad it wasn't the "key" clue! That being written, I'm off to do laundry... I'd hate to show up in Vail next week wearing such lovely snowpants.

I'm with ya on that. I've already printed out the clue explanations from this year to remind myself to think down to their level... Street names and big trees, it's all that matters.

An Ode to our Clue Writer

It's hard to put into words how I truly feel about our incredulous Clue Writer. They can best be described as:

A .22 caliber intellect in a .357 Magnum world.

A black-and-white mind working on a color-coded problem.

A doughnut short of being a cop.

A few beers short of a six-pack.

A few clowns short of a circus.

A few guppies short of an aquarium.

A few peas short of a goulash.

A few pickles short of a jar.

A few pies short of a holiday.

A few tiles missing from the space shuttle.

A flower short of an arrangement.

A few french fries short of a Happy Meal.

A hop, skip, and jump from success, but to get there they'd have to give up chewing gum.

A little light in his loafers.

A natural talent for finding subliminal messages in ice cubes.

A photographic memory, but the lens cover is glued on.

A span short of a bridge.

A titanic intellect... In a world full of icebergs.

A violin minus the bow.

A walking argument for birth control.

And my favorite....

A few clues shy of a solution.

Too flipping funny!

Gonna keep trying though. Thanks for the laughs!

Oobs WAS fun! Felt good to laugh until the tears ran down my cheeks.

Felt like old times with Eags around - thanks for the RR! That voo-doo stuff works! When Terry is tired, Terry is a nut case. Thought we were going to have to do CPR and call 911. She couldn't quit laughing and consequently couldn't breathe. Was fun getting the old ENTOURAGE together (tip o'the hat to Eags, for that moniker!) Missed talking to Me2, but wasn't able to make it over that way. But for her, think I did manage to snag everyone else while they tooed and froed. Waving to Me2, "Catch me at the Re-Hash Bash!"

While Mucky's never been ugly, she was looking wonderful and gorgeous last nite. Ssssoooo GOOD to see her!

Really glad OT showed up. She is such good company to be around.

Ian, Mucky, if you will send me your e-mail addresses via tree-mail here, I'll have my boss contact you with particulars. I'll be around here until the 7th, when I 'poof' like one o'Mappy Gooey's books, and then Mom will have to fix me.

Mom, Dad heartfelt thanks for the limo ride. Ittiz way Cooler to have your own little black limo complete with driver and a mom. Mom, you remind me of the Mom fairy in Shrek II, but w/o the mean streak. You both are so good to me.

I will be off to my Zen place today. Need to go home, ground and be a big duck in a mud puddle. Commune and do my own hoo-doo. However I will NOT be using a chicken complete with head/feet and rice coming outta it's pooper and Gingy-like paper peeps fluttering in the wind on sticks and feathers attached to those sticks. SHEESH! By gods! I SHOULD go to India and do an LBJ-sized BBQ and invite the frickin' neighborhood!

Rumor has it... There may be a six-noodle dish at the Re-Hash Bash in honor o'your's truly acing 6 noodles!

Will check in later I guess. Catch you all at the 10th Anniversary Re-Hash Bash!

the drivel of the OT bashing on PP boards reminds me:

my mom called me last night...

she said on the LaCrosse news that the broadcaster said that the people of minnesota were very upset that a cheesehead found it.

huh?? I was speechless to my mom.

it took me a little while to figure out their source

I feel like pontificating this morning:

1) I thought Jake found a cross country ski trail and follwed the tracks of that, and there was a parallel set of footprints with the tracks?

2) Clues _usually_ have one explanation. I wonder about the efficacy of these clues, as they seem to be written by a clue rookie. I think this'll make things harder next year, since you have to pick A word and then go four degrees off.

3) Gotta remember, kids, as much as we really do like each other (mostly) we are all in it for ourselves, so to speak - and there's TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS on the line. We saw it last year, sharing an idea, another guy picks up the check.

4) That being said, one of the really cooler things about this group is you end up hanging out and making friends with people you'd never know otherwise. I have a picture hanging in my basement of Me, Zeph, Mikey, Cluey, Ice, Me2, Icesis from IMP last year. One of my fondest memories of hunting is walking around Lake Como at 2 in the morning with 2 diggin' girls last year. So there's something to be said for friendship and fellowship of the med.

All things being equal, I've never heard of anyone (even Jake, who credits BrassMonkey for help) of completely deducing all the clues and finding it on their own. I'm happy to share ideas with good people like Mikey and LAM and go hunting with them, anytime. Because the classiest thing anyone's ever done here is Jake, who has as big of an ego as anyone, and gave credit where credit is due for the right noodle.

So - I'm going to pick up where Dave left off -

":Hey guys, we're sure to get it next year!"

I should have posted this sooner ...

A lot of you probably heard about geocaching this year, maybe even found one. If you have any interest at all, check out this thread:

jonsom, "Welcome Geocachers!" #292, 30 Jan 2008 2:04 am

There are a lot of "hidden" threads, because of bad-guy lurkers, trolls, jerks. If you post a note in the Welcome forum, you can gain access to more info, and a better idea of what we do.
Thu, 01/31/2008 - 9:51 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

Just to be clear. The hidden threads Ian mentioned are in his geocaching forum and are only for geocaching. They are NOT TREASURE HUNT RELATED.

Dont want no one to think we're hiding on them.
Thu, 01/31/2008 - 9:59 AM Permalink
KC0GRN

Nope. All geocaching, all the time.

I highly suggest finding micros in the woods for hunt training for next year. In fact, I think I'll start a list of ones to go find, heh.

Sorry about that.

If you're interested, stop in and say hi. Magically, you will be overwhelmed with info. Well, as soon as one of us can "bless" you.

I keep saying I'm going to go out and do this but I haven't attempted it on my own yet. I did look one up at a park here in Eagan but then at the last minute something else came up and I never went out to look for it. I really would love to go check out the one down in Crosby that 3M told me about but I doubt if I could find my way back down there again.

I just gotta say this. There are a few people from whom I never want to hear the word integrity from, especially as it relates to the hunt. 1) people who will just join the front of the line at the pp on a regular basis, no matter who or how many people are already standing in line, and 2) people who will move hunt beacons to throw other hunters off. L-A-M-E

There's no integrity there, not in my way of thinking anyhow...

he told me, as he was walking me back to the hiding spot the day it was found that he had dug this area here for like 3 hours. Got up, stretched/whatever, noticed a solitary set of footprints, got about 15 feet from where it was found and saw the medallion in it's icy slumber under the log.

My 2 cents, and I am done talking about it...
