"If nominated, I will not accept; if drafted, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve.” William Tecumseh Sherman

Delegates are choses proportionately to how many votes a candidate gets at the state convention, a process that begins at the local level.

On the DFL side, national delegates are chosen proportionally to the result of the preference ballot at the caucuses. Also, national delegates are bound to the candidate that they're pledged to. Meaning if I'm a national delegate for Obama, I can't vote for Hillary at the convention.

OT

However, at the national convention, the losing candidate can release his delegates as a sign of party unity. I don't see this happening in this election though. It's too tight.
Mon, 02/04/2008 - 8:28 AM Permalink
barefootguy

I agree. I could actually see this one going all the way to the convention.

How is the average person suppose to know all this? Does the average person really know who or what they are voting for when they vote?
Mon, 02/04/2008 - 8:38 AM Permalink
OT

The debates are a good source of information where they ask the hard questions of the candidates on where they stand on the issues.

Politics can be as much fun and as frustrating as the PP Treasure Hunt.

I'm not talking about just the issues that are being debated, I'm talking about the all the different voting things, such as the different caucus events and what they are for, and delegates and all that. I'm pretty educated but it still confusing to me.

This from the Sun Current newspaper explains it pretty well:

"For those looking to make their voices heard in the political realm, there may not be a better time to do so than during precinct caucuses.

This year, Minnesota's three major parties - Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL), Independence (I) and Republican (R) - will conduct the local meetings Feb 5 where residents can participate at the most grassroots level. The meetings were moved up this year to coincide with the date that many other states throughout the nation conduct their caucuses or primaries in a presidential election year.

While caucus-goers will vote on who they would like to see headline their party's presidential ticket, the primary purpose of the caucuses is to elect local party leaders and discuss local issues.

At the caucuses, delegates will be elected to attend nominating conventions at the district and state level that occur later in the year. At these conventions, the parties decide which candidates they will support in the primary and general elections in the fall.

Besides being a forum to elect delegates, the caucuses provide those attending with the opportunity to discuss their views on political issues. Resolutions are submitted by those attending, then voted on, and can be brought to the larger conventions to be considered as additions to the party's platform.

While preference polls will be taken at the Republican and DFL caucuses for presidential candidates, straw polls are also often taken for candidates in lower offices within the party."

This districting formula sucks. I'll be caucusing with people from Grey Cloud Island, Newport, Cottage Grove, St. Paul Park and only one other ward from So. St. Paul. You would think the river would at least separate a district.
Mon, 02/04/2008 - 9:24 AM Permalink
Clue Master

That was pretty informative OT. Thanks So basically, if it comes down to it, only the delegates at the national convention have a say in who gets elected. But you already know who the delegates are going to vote for ahead of time since they can't change who they're voting for (in the DFL example) from when they were elected at the local level.

That is weird that Grey Cloud Island has to come all the way to SSP to vote.

What's even weirder is that other than two small wards in SSP, everyone else in SSP is in District 39. I don't even live in the same county as the majority of folks in 57A.

And regarding delegates. There are also Super Delegates to consider.

You don't have to be a registered voter to caucus. Just be eligible to vote in the election. So you can attend the one close to your home.

Edit: Maybe I'm wrong about this. I'd heard something about this, but can't find anything to back it up.

Oh ok kool!! I still think I am going to the green PARTY!! LOL I just like the name!! and I have always voted green or Ind.!!

I might be wrong about this, Iceman. I'd heard you didn't need to be registered, just be eligible to vote in November. But I'm looking to see if I can verify that anywhere.

I thought you said that you liked Al Franken? Seriously dude don't support 3rd parties, all they're good for is helping to make sure that someone wins the election with less than a majority. There isn't a day that goes by that Gov. Pawlenty doesn't thank god for Peter Hutchinson.

Found this at Minnesota Office of Secretary of State website:

"Who can attend the caucuses?

Precinct caucuses are open to the public. To participate at a caucus you must be eligible to vote in the November 4, 2008 state general election and support or be likely to support the candidates of the political party whose caucus you attend."

Personal JOE! Yikes!
Mon, 02/04/2008 - 10:05 AM Permalink

That's correct, you don't have to be registered to vote in order to caucus.

Hey I just realized that you're in the same senate district as me! That means that if you volunteer to be a delegate at your caucus (which you will need to in order to have an impact on the senate race), we will be at the same district convention. Our district convention is Saturday, March 8th at WBL high school, south campus. You should totally do it.

Your caucus is at Chippewa Middle School, which is actually where mine is too. We're in the same building but different rooms.

nope in the Prez. if there isn't someone I like I try for a 3rd party!! but the thing to look at is we need to do away with that thinking and make 3rd party stand out in peoples minds that they are out there so many people think they can only vote for the 2 party's I have a friend that is that way and I told him to look at the net there are lots of options out there that you don't know about odds are there not going to get any where but make your vote be heard step up and say something!!

Sure, Iceman. We'll play cards.

To answer your question regarding the direction I lean, my views differ from the views of the candidates. I don't think there is really a party (Democratic, Republican, or otherwise) that I fall into perfectly. I pay no attention to any third-party candidates, because I feel as though our current system (although I am not sure that I really like it) works best with only two parties. I am fairly liberal, and definitely not conservative.

As far as going to a caucus, I like Obama and Clinton equally right now, so I don't really see a point in going.
