I just moved my desk, file cabinets, and all my computer and phone equipment from the great room to the guest room - I figure the house will show better with the great room uncluttered and not screaming "WORK".
My little office area looks so neat and tidy and efficient, except for the cords streaming everywhere! Guess I'll have to work on that before the for sale sign goes up.
Now that I think about it more, probably just need to replace the jack, it's plastic.... Now if I had a good source for laptop parts.... then yes, I could fix it.

I installed my Palm desktop but it is in the admin account and want to access it from my user account, how do i grant and or take away access to programs to users?
I just got XP figured out now I have to relearn everything :frown:
I've heard about problems like that with Vista, it's fairly confusing for the average computer user, and annoying for the people who know what they're doing.
I would try and reinstall the Palm Desktop from your user account. If memory serves, it'll ask you for the admin password when you try to install it?
Beyond that, Oddly enough I haven't messed with Vista much, as I agree with the guys on Twit, its about as good as windows ME was, and needs to be replaced.
I'm still testing this, but I think it'd be a good option to allow me to offer some remote support for whomever wants help getting things to work on their PCs.
Hrmm... I'm unfamiliar with vista's "behind the scenes"... I'm guessing it's there, but hidden. Try opening the C drive from my computer. There should be a folder called Documents and Settings. if so, see if there's an admin folder and try browsing around in there to find the palm desktop program shortcut. That's assuming you can even do that...
One of the major problems with vista is that it's security measures hinder a users ability to install certain programs...
BTW looking at the title picture here, I thought I'd check that urban dictionary site out. Here's a pretty famous computer guy, but ya barely hear about him these days.

Yes, he went to SSP. Graduated in '83. That's Lake Osakis. We go there for a week in July.
Did you set up your user account with parental controls? If so, you could run through the control panel to user accounts, and change your settings to allow shared files through there (allow and unblock specific programs.
Or... From the Start menu, find your program, right click it and select "properties". Go to the security tab, and see if your other user account is listed there. you can then go to "to change permissions click edit" spot and you should be able to give yourself access to the program from the other user account.
I don't know why it wouldn't set it up under both accounts... All of my programs automatically share under Vista.
Okay you computer doctors out there ... I need some help with my parents computer. For those lay persons - it's computereese - so just move on...
Model Specs - All factory original stuff
Type - Dell Dimension 2400 w. Celeron Processor (2.4 ghz I think)
HardDrive: 80 GB Hard drive (only about 22 used)
Memory: 256 MB - only about 60 MB after startup
Modem: No high speed Net in the country - dialup is slow (about 30k true speed)
Software: Windows XP w. Service Pack 2, Complete MacAffee protection package
Problem: The thing is slower than molasses in January.
EVERYTHING tries to ping the internet at startup to get updates, and any updates "needed" would take days to download. Ten minutes just to get some sort of useable function out of the thing after turning it on.
Solutions: More memory? Dump MacAffee? Dump Dell service pack stuff? How can I disable all that stupid "Need Updates" crap so it will only update if I tell it to?
Note: "active processes" at startup is about 45 different things - MacAffee is the real memory hog there. Some of it may be spyware, but I cannot tell what.
running only 256mbs of ram on windows xp will make the system crawl, especially given the amount of programs running at startup.
Solution: As much as I hate to say it, add RAM, get them at least to 512MBs (it's a fairly cheap option these days anyway), Disable updates would help with the annoyances at startup. Depending on how much they get on the net, I'd look at at least limiting what McAfee does. Sadly, no antivirus program is 100% effective anyway, and most are resource hogs that make the viruses look minor in comparison.
Try to remove any spyware you can find. Try to apply any windows updates (though I know on dialup, that's never a fun option).
Cheapest 512 MB memory chip I found on the net is $33 - memory as a whole is getting cheaper by the minute. The hard part is convincing a couple pushing 70 that their graphic artist son knows what he's doing inside their computer.
-- I had to draw them a diagram of how to hook up the antenna cable to their VCR so they wouldn't forget - I highly doubt that task has even been done yet by them.
Any idea which MacAffee startups I can disable? -Or will that be a non-factor once their memory is upgraded?
I had some problems with comcasts free version of McAffe slowing my computer to a crawl. I uninstalled it and went with norton and havn't had a problem since.

CD/DVD Burners - we have two at work - one external and one internal
We use RETROSPECT to burn a backup archive file of all our 'Done' work files about once a month. With Retrospect we can go back and search catalogs to resurrect projects that may be one, two - even five years old.
Our burners were made during the time when recordable DVDs were at 8x speed. I always use DVD-R disks, but I have no control over what brand names get purchased. We have used successfully just about every brand name out there. The last batch of DVD-Rs I used were Verbatim 16x Speed with absolutely no problem.
Our purchasing agent took a sweet deal -buy 100 Sony DVD-R disks, get and extra 100 free. They are Sony DVD-R version 2.1 1x-16x disks. They might as well be made of Kryptonite.
One of our burners refuses to record on them, no matter how many times I update the firmware. The other burns fine when using Toast Titanium, but when I use Retrospect, it does this goofy thing where it will burn the first disk only partially, and then stop because of Error 204 (device busy). It asks for Disk Two and continues archiving without problem.
I have looked thoroughly into all firmware / software updates - tried random DVDs from the second 100 pack, everything I can think of. This ONLY happens with these Sony 16x DVD-Rs - even Sony 8x DVD-Rs are fine. How the hell can 200 of these things be bad? Is there a manufacturers recall I am not aware of, or do I need to get a newer burner?
I have found with my DVD burner that if they are light scribe DVD's they dont work at all for me!! but I give them to my brother and he has the same burner as me and he dosnt have any problems??? so I dont know? just my 2 cents the rest is free!!
Using Lightscribe CDs REQUIRES a firmware update for all but the newest burners - there's dozens of upgrades available - just get the match for your brand of burner.
I found lightscribe software for mine - I just haven't bought any Lightscribe CDs yet to see if it works. Its a cool idea - might put Avery labels out of business.

The biggest trick is pulling the laptop apart to do it, but I've had some practice in handling that without causing any damage.
