Daughter managed to get herself out of a downward financial spiral today!

Shortly after moving to San Diego, she bought a Nissan Pathfinder. Gas prices now being up higher than they are here, she was using $80 to fill her tank each week. She didn't have any money left for anything and was worried she'd end up bankrupt.

She traded the Nissan and got herself a Toyota Yaris - brand new for only a few more dollars than she was making in car payments now. With the savings in gas, she will come out ahead.

I'm so relieved. I was truly worried about how we was going to get groceries and pay the rent.

catching the goose!

used the neighbor's fenced in yard to confine them (only had 3 goslings in there which was nice) and a big game net to catch the one with the problem wing.

we got it in a box and made the trek out to the wildlife rehab center. they decided that they couldn't do anything for angel and their option was to put it down. we were having none of that and so he's happily reunited with the rest of the family on the pond.

of course things will be different in the fall, because this one little goose won't be able to fly with the rest, so we've got an agenda to provide shelter for it as it winters until the rest of the family comes back in the spring.

Mad_Dach5und

There's a lot of predators that are a bigger threat than Ice... is the bird truly flightless, or just going thru that molting thing until it can fly again?

Unfortunately, rehab places like the Raptor Center will probably never take in a common honker since there are so many of them.

What about your dogs? How do you keep them away from chasing the birds?
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 8:28 PM Permalink
ares

aside from the fact that they've been brought up with geese, our dogs aren't chasers of geese, since only bad dogs do that sort of thing

actually the dogs are indoor dogs, and the goose is an outdoor goose, and when the dogs are outside, they're in the run on the side of the garage or a leash so keeping them separate isn't an issue.

tc has a long history with the raptor center. she's gonna call pat reddig (founder of the raptor center) and see what he recommends. she may be able to pull in some favors if she needs to.

Getting fireworks applause from across the lake for the 3rd year in a row. We have in-laws that have a cabin near Turtle Lake, WI.

I've never used the "Large" 500 gram cakes yet. It all has to do with timing. I fused together the loud single boom "Sammy Shots" so that a barrage of about 15 of them went off at almost the same time. Can't get any louder than that without getting into Class B or higher fireworks. Class C is mostly what they sell in Baldwin, WI.

Merlin, our weiner dog, is still scared of the fireworks, but he sat in my niece's lap during most of the show, only shivering ever so often during the loud stuff. His noise tolerance has really improved a lot in the past year or so.

This is the letter I sent. I got a call from the store's GM this morning offering me a full refund.

Dear Ms. Donaldson:

I am writing to you in response to an issue I have experienced with “Curl”, the Sammy Duvall surf shop at Downtown Disney in the Walt Disney World Complex. I ask for several things, including a refund, explanation and apology.

I purchased a pair of Maui Jim MJ Sport 501 sunglasses on June 30, 2008. I have a very large head, and I needed a pair of sunglasses for the week of my honeymoon. When my wife and I entered Curl, we were told by “Cat” that Curl was the only place around to buy sunglasses, and that if I had a big head (my verbiage, not hers) that I would need to purchase the Maui Jims at a total cost of $281.

Cat asked me if I wanted to wear the sunglasses, I did, so she took the tag off of the sunglasses, gave them to me, and then I paid for them, and walked out. I walked west through Pleasure Island , and left Downtown Disney. Later that evening, my wife and I found the Sunglass Icon store, almost in view of Curl – and I purchased a more reasonable pair of sunglasses.

When I returned to Curl to return the sunglasses, I was told that no refund would be given, and that I was stupid for even asking for one because the policy was listed on the receipt that I had brought back. I was called “Stupid” by Chris, the manager, in front of my wife of 8 days. (Please Note: My wife and I were both wearing the “Just Married” buttons given to us by our Disney resort – and she was wearing bride ears – so it should have been obvious that we were honeymooning.)

Later that week I had mentioned to the concierge at my Disney hotel about our experience and he was horrified. He called Curl, talked to Chris, and was told that he would personally lose money if he took the sunglasses back, because of the corporate policy. He was also told by Chris that if those “sunglass people” had more problems they can call the corporate office themselves.

Ms. Donaldson, I understand the trouble of working retail, and certainly managing a store is difficult at best. However, I pose the following questions to you, which I would ask for responses:

· With a Sunglass Icon several hundred yards away – is it corporate policy to lie to guests about other stores in the area when asked? (Please note: The employees that I have talked to at Sunglass Icon were shocked at the lying of your associates and will not be referring Disney guests to Curl – I guess they figured turnabout is fair play.)

· Is it corporate policy to call someone stupid when inquiring about a refund?

· Is it corporate policy to call someone stupid when they’re wearing a “Just Married” button?

· Would Chris really have had to pay out of his own pocket if he had refunded my money?

· If it is corporate policy to not accept merchandise without a tag, why is it policy for an employee to take a tag off of merchandise before it is paid for?

· If I had told the employee that I wanted to wear the purchased sunglasses out of the store, and then decided after they were de-tagged to not go ahead and purchase the sunglasses – how much would Chris have to pay out of pocket for the sunglasses in question?

· Why is it corporate policy to refuse a refund of unused merchandise with no defect?

With respect to the last bulleted question, upon my return to Minnesota I asked the glasses to be analyzed by two different Optometrists – neither of which could find a flaw or defect, both said the glasses could easily be sold at full price.

It is my position that in taking off the tag to the sunglasses pre-purchase, without being informed of Curl’s return policy (or by indicating to the Curl staff that I actually wanted the tag off), I was given faulty merchandise – and I respectfully ask you (instead of Chris) for a refund. Further, given Chris’s inflammatory behavior, I think a refund would be more than fair, but I would ask for a further clarification of the corporate policies before asking that of you. As I said, the Optometrists will be happy to vouch for their condition as unharmed.

Further, I would like a written apology from Chris for his atrocious behavior toward me and my wife. While I can understand the stresses of managing a retail store as Chris is clearly under to berate a customer, his behavior was completely shocking, rude and unacceptable. A part of our Honeymoon will forever be ruined because of our experience with Chris, and by extension Curl.

I will be happy to provide my receipt of purchase as well as letters from the Optometrists (as well as their qualifications) and the actual merchandise itself. I would appreciate a swift response to my above questions and concerns, you can contact me at the information below. I will wait until Wednesday, July 10 at Noon Central Time to begin

No, no explanations, just a LOT of apologies, and an offer for refund. Good news is I have to ship them back to Florida - so I'll have to insure them - so if there really is any problems I can collect on the insurance!

Yay! I love winning.

I think the Mouse (as a business) thinks they can afford to be jackasses to most tourists, since active replies like yours are probably one in a million. Nice to know assertiveness isn't completely dead. Good for you RB!

My ONE souvenir from my brothers' tropical wedding cruise to the Virgin Islands was a pair of Tax-free Ray-Ban sunglasses that I got in St. Thomas. I can't remember the exact price, but it was something like $175. Four months later I went to the Ray-Ban Store at the Mall of America - the exact same model was for sale at something like $167.75. After sales tax it came to about $179.

I can't complain about the cruise, but all the bragging they do in the Islands about tax and duty free goods just doesn't impress me anymore.

Hence why I don't really care to go to such places.

I'd rather spend my time in an actual park vs. a theme park, lol. Nothing against those that enjoy theme parks, mind you. They're just not my cup of tea.

When I think back on the best places I've ever been to, I don't think of when my grandmother took me to Disneyland when I was 8. I think of the trips I took to Arizona, when I saw the Grand Canyon. And when we travelled back through Zion national park. Or when I climbed up to the top of El Morro. Or when I took the train through Glacier national park and the Cascades out to Seattle.

Good Job on the refund Bear..

now.. can I ask an english grammar question here (I'm hung up on this cause I'm in my spanish grammar class, and I really need a refresher on english grammar -- cause mine is so poor, it makes my spanish twice as hard)

Is it me and my wife or my wife and I? is both acceptable in a formal letter? in english in general? In spanish it could only be mi esposa y yo.

thoughts? -- from the girl who is up to her ears in adverbs, present participles and completed past and imperfect past tenses for a huge midterm manana.

KC - I'm kinda with you on that one. The last time I think I hit disneyland I was 8, and didn't like it then. I've been to the ride theme park by my house once this summer and it was the first time in like 8 or 10 years, and it's less than 30 mins away.

I would rather just go somewhere, that is as geographically different from where I live, and just nose around and explore and see how they people there live.

enjoy (ie the reason I stopped by this board)

driving one onto the green yesterday (actually I drove 3 onto the green) but this one in particular - I landed it 6 ft. 4inches from the pin. I could have had a hole in one - but I putted for Birdie.

It was 102 outside and I thought I was going to die - that made playing in the heat so much better. Oh and the $20 I got for closest to the pin for the match.

That's kinda what I did when I went up to the northwest angle. There wasn't a lot to do there, but I think I bugged anyone working at a general store, resort or restaurant. I don't think they were used to tourists...
