Hmmm... outdoor things we do during summer...

Golf - Use a Carbon / Aluminum Rod

Baseball / Softball - Use a Wood / Aluminum Rod

Fishing - Use a Carbon / Aluminum / Bamboo Rod

Camping - Sleep in Tents made with Aluminum / Carbon Rods

I think my little cap button is not going to be a real danger. Besides, if you get hit, ain't gonna matter WHAT you're wearing OR holding!

Maybe the cap saved his life and drew the current AROUND him instead of directly THROUGH him? Makes me think twice about washing out those salty sweat stains in my cap.

just don't walk barefoot across open areas surrounded by big trees. I met a guy that was struck twice in that same scenario.

Heck of a storm that went by today at the Mall of America. I was suposed to go out and take a water sample on the roof, but there was no way I was doing that in the rain and hail.

Then all hell broke loose. the sewers in the transit station were blowing water 6 feet in the air and flooded the lower east parking ramp is places about 2 feet deep.

Then Sears started taking in water on the 3rd floor. They had a clogged roof drain pipe that they knew about yesterday. They took their time getting a plumber out to fix it. The plumber was working on it when the storm came and dumped all the rain. The unsuported pipe broke and fell over, releasing all the roof water onto the 3rd floor. 6 roof drains fed into that pipe. The water was about 5 inches deep all throughout sears. Of course it all leaked down through the 2nd and 1st floors too. Ceiling tiles fall when they're wet. And float.

Needless to say, sears is closed for a while. Gonna be a musty place for a while I think. Maybe they'll have a flood sale?

Made an intersesting day...

We had to fix our company sign this afternoon. Holding on to a sheet of metal on an electronic personnel lift when the skies were getting darker and darker was a bit freaky. We got it done, and got the lift parked in the garage about 10 sec before the first rumble of thunder. WheW! :ooh:

Didn't want to wait until tomorrow 'cause it's supposed to get freakishly hot.

I just talked to my son Mags (Eagan, Nicols and Diffley area) - one of their trees was hit by the storm that went through this afternoon. He is headed out there with the chain saw now. I think only the top of it got hit, and it is sort of just hanging there. Bummer. They lost a bunch of trees last year and really, of course, didn't want to lose any more.

too bad all the really good stuff there is on the first floor.

and likely not damaged by the floodwaters

we lost quite a few trees in northwest apple valley. one of sarah's friends lost 3 big oaks in their front yard. 'twill look naked.

we lost one of the last 2 live branches of our apple tree. its started to meet mr. chain saw but i was being eaten alive as i was cutting it up. and being watched by a flock of geese and a muskrat.

damn shame too. that branch broke off all the way to the base of the tree; it won't survive much longer i think, since i could probably push the 2 dead branches off of it now. gonna try to keep it around for the rest of the summer and plant a new apple tree when the weather is appropriate for it.

tc looked up and one minute the geese were there and the next they were gone. she was frantic until she found them happily out on the pond.

We have a purple leaf plum tree in our front yard. We knew it had issues. It has more issues now and needs to be taken down. It's the size of a crab apple tree. The other choice is to let a storm blow the one half over - but then we would likely have to do some fence replacing or repair.

Anyone know of tree removal place that you would recommend?

My son hired someone for my house on 4th Street after the storm blew over a tree. He was VERY reasonable. So inexpensive that he had him take down another tree that was growing too close to a fence too.

I'm waiting for a phone call to get his name and phone number.

The man's name is Rick Cook. The company is called Green Tree & Stump. He may be the company. Phone number is 651-263-6595. Apparently he was in a boating accident and his speech is impaired so he's hard to understand, but a nice guy. He removes the stump and hauls everything away too. And cheap!

One good turn deserves another. My neighbor is getting new windows and I told her about Beissel on your recommendation. They're starting the job today.

I think were staying in tonight. I'm tired.

"Officially" it's my 3rd week. First full week though. I only had a day and 1/2 on the 1st week, then had 4 days and the holiday the 2nd week (because of 4th July), and finally got in 41.5 hours this week.

So lesse.. we got CM in the 625 building downtown (did they give it an official name yet?) and 3M in the Mall of America.. me2 in the landmark center.. any other cooler crew in famous/well known buildings?

And btw 3M, did you learn any interesting facts about the mall that the common person might not know? (That you can talk about I suppose.. dunno if there's security stuff).

I still call it 225 South Sixth since that covers all three sections of the building even though some call the tall part the Capella Tower. I'm going to go up top right now and take a few pictures of the completed span of the 35W bridge. I hear you can walk across it now.

Thank you OT! They must be good. Someone at work mentioned them today! If the storms tonight don't take it down, we'll be calling.

I hope your neighbor enjoys her new windows. They are the only contractor we've ever worked with that I would recommend to anyone. They always made right if anything was less than perfect...and that was once I think. They have done our windows, sidewalks, roof, siding and some railings outside.

Opps, 225 I meant.. I used to work at a 625 building downtown.

Cool, can't wait to see the pics CM. I see there's a storm coming in now.

I love watching storms. I think I inherited that from my dad. When my mom was trying to get us to the basement, my dad would be sitting at the picnic table watching it roll in. He'd finally get yelled at enough that he would go in so I would get to the basement with the rest of my siblings and mom.

I just came back down from there. I wasn't able to make it to the other side of the roof because the wind was too strong and I didn't want to go flipping off the end. I would have tried harder if I knew some storms were coming in. Here's a couple of the bridge. All connected now.

Nice shots, the last one is great, heh. Shoot, they're gonna have that thing done way before the deadline... Of course I suppose there's lots of work still to be done, but it's already connected, that's impressive.

Too bad they aren't that enthusiastic about finishing the Wakota Bridge. What's it been now, ten years?

I say that in jest because I realize the 35 span is more than just rerouting traffic, but it seems like ridiculously long time to complete the Wakota.

I learned theres an awful lot of back corridors to get lost in that the average person probly don't know even exist.

Found some stalagmites in the parking areas.

Is that pic of you taken by you? Is it your reflection? Great shot!

I think everything for the Wakota is complete, save for the final river span. The finally opened up the eastbound side of the Hwy 61 bridge portion a couple weeks ago. It looks like they are finishing up the approach ramps on both sides, and I've finally seen river cranes brought in this last week.

What's the link for the Wakota MnDOT project? Do they have a deadline date on there as of yet?

OT - They came out today and the tree and stump are history. Cost us $500.

Then the neighbors to the east had them remove two evergreens that had just gotten way too overgrown and the neighbors to the east had them come over and trim their maple tree in the back yard.

That outfit did good business today in this neighborhood.

heh.

not weather related, but we lost power for about an hour from 330-430 this morning. something to be said for waking up to the sound of 4 battery backup units chirping that they have no mains power.

and something to be said for possibly needing to replace an $89 battery because its apparently not taking a charge. not that i can complain, its 6.5 years old, which is 2.5 years more than what the other one lasted.

Our ancient battery backups are there to keep the tornado from carrying the building away. They don't serve any other purpose that I can find. I think the youngest one was probably built in 2002.

ares

i've got one built on 2/26/02, and the other on 10/16/02. both of those cover the data center in the basement; 1.5kva a piece.

In the building here, a battery backup is a must for the server. Power here is really dirty, any time a storm comes through the lights flicker, sometimes we get the half second thing that kicks most of the stuff off...

Half the time in the morning I'll come in to find the battery backup chirping. It's working, it just goes off after any power loss and stays on until I hit the button on it. Which is telling me the building is having power problems overnight... I think anyway.

you know, tim, it doesn't take death to qualify for a darwin award; merely removing oneself from the gene pool. the inability to procreate, by whatever means that was accomplished (see "redneck vasectomy") does in fact qualify. doubtful that'll be the case here, but there have been others.
