I don't know what else to say. I had the same problems and it was my antivirus software. What are you using? Try tweaking some of the settings and keep trying. Sometimes just refeshing the page helped.

Heres more nightmares on the same subject. Seems theres a lot of problems out there and not a lot of solutions. Seem like adobe just don't care or has their head in the sand.

I've un-installed and re-installed Flash Player 9 on my Mac.

Everything I 'normally' go to works fine. Movie previews through Quicktime, YouTube Video, and Google Video to name a few. Even that AOL 'Grinder' video worked.

Metacafe still has something goofy going on. Black window with audio only.

I tried to register and sign on as a member, but I still get the black screen. Once you log in however, there are a few extra boxes that appear above each video. When I click on "Edit Video Details" box, the video screen goes into an 'edit' menu and the video appears normally. If I exit the edit menu without doing a single thing, the video goes back to its normal web player and plays normally!

If I click on another video link - either inside the player or outside - the player goes to the next web page and back to a black window w. audio again. Even if I just hit the 'refresh' button on a video I just watched, the video goes back to black!

There is something wrong with the scripting that intitally starts the video window, and my guess it's on Metacafe's site. - Like I said. Goofy.

Anybody know how or where I can get a power jack fixed on a Zire 72 Palm Pilot?

KC0GRN

speaking of power jacks, kitch, did you ever get yours fixed?

Mikey, what's wrong with it?

The jack plug goes in but is really loose and won't charge the unit. I think theres supposed to be a center pin inside the jack on the unit that the plug shaft is supposed to go over, but either the pin broke or possibly got pushed to far in.

General Question for everyone --

The newer Macintosh computers have the ability to install and run both the Mac OS X system AND Windows Vista (or XP).

Does anyone know someone with a Mac who has done this sometime recently?

The only people I know that have an opinion are on Apple's payroll at the corporate stores.

Our graphics department (read: ME) has reached a loggerhead at work where we have to get a new computer and upgrade our software to stay afloat. Our IT service wants us to switch all our equipment and software from mostly Mac-based to a Windows system, mainly because they won't touch the Macs with a 10 foot pole for service calls.

HOWEVER, we could get a new (more expensive) Mac tower, a copy of Windows Vista or XP, and just buy upgrades to the software we already have, thus making the overall cost basically the same and getting a two-fer on one computer.

I've been a Mac person my entire life, but I really don't mind switching over - I'd appreciate any feedback from someone who's already been there.

In my small experience with running cross platforms on one system, usually the one not built for it suffers.

IOW, I think that while you can run windows on a mac, it will probably run more problematic than on a pc. Granted, no system is without flaws (I know mac guys that would argue that with me, I really don't want to argue.. life's too short and nobody convinces anyone of anything) and when you try combining two, odds are there will be compatibility problems, installation headaches, and genral funkiness of trying to use two on one.

I understand the frustration with tech support not wanting to touch macs. You'd think a guy that makes his living working on computers shouldn't have such a bias. I know I don't, I just don't often get the chance to work on a mac, so my expertise wouldn't be the greatest. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to try though.

My past experience with it was a program created for Mac called "Virtual PC"

It was an application that created an oversized "file" that was essentially a partition that could boot up Windows 95. The main bug with it was that it would ONLY boot up Windows 95 - the base, core edition of it. So you had no flexibility or upgradability with anything - you couldn't change the display resolution, or the memory settings, etc... I tried running an old version of the Tomb Raider game on it - the graphics looked like an Atari 2600 and it crashed if you tried to push it higher. It was not created by Apple, just some 3rd party who was designing PC emulators.

The NEW sell with the Mac OS X is that it can run Windows as Native speed, even making it the boot volume if you choose - I don't know what to think because I haven't seen it myself yet. Here the link - see what you think:

first off its A MAC!! they are great of Graph. but now that there are other programs out there for PC that can do the same I would just go the with the PC like Kc says I can see alot of problems with the 2 working aganst one another!! Only in part because they are in the Computer War aganst one another!!

But IN my Opinion I would just go the route of least Problems! for everyone!! and GO PC FOR LIFE!!!

Lol, well honestly I'm not pro PC or pro Mac. I use whatever gets the job done. There are pros and cons to both systems. However.. really it isn't even Mac vs PC, as PC is a fairly vague term. Mac hardware is synonymous with the Macintosh OS, whereas a PC is not synonymous with Windows. You can run Linux, Unix, OS/2 Warp (albiet that's a bit antiquated) or a number of other lesser known OSes on PC hardware. Macintosh tends to make their hardware to only operate well with the Mac os.

Anyways back to the question at hand, I'll need to do more research on that link MD. I know when I was in high school, all the computers there were Macs. They did want a PC to run on one, but back then, the hardware was so different that a 3rd party provider actually made a hardware board with a 486 processor on it that got installed into a Mac to create a virtual PC. It was an intriguing solution to a compatibility problem. Nowadays, Mac's hardware structure has changed to fit more of the PC market (i.e. similar processors, USB, Firewire, Ethernet (I guess that's always been around though), RAM, Video cards, etc.) so the physical compatibility might not be as bad.

I'm doing more research on it myself- here's some more techno mumbo-jumbo to chew on...

The Mac Pro Towers that are currently being made use QUAD-Core processors that are supposedly a generation ahead of the DUO-Core processors most PC towers are being manufactured with. Everyone who has used one says they are screamingly fast. That's part of the reason why Apple advertises it can run Windows faster than a PC.

The Towers use Intel chips now, and the architecture is nearly identical to most Windows machines out there. Any Apple machine with an Intel chip in it can supposedly be loaded completely with Windows and you don't even have to use the Mac software.

The "BootCamp" function is really kind of dumb - when you start up the computer, you can option to open it either Windows or OS X - but not at the same time.

There are two extra programs out there that cost $80 that allow you to run Windows and OS X simultaneously - one is called Parallels, the other is called VM Fusion. I talked to tech this morning that swears by Parallels - he uses a Mac with Parallels on it, and does Windows diagnostics and repairs with it.

An older version of this program was called "Virtual PC" and was a real turd because the computers were built very differently. Apparently these newer ones actually work!

Benchmark Test - Windows on a Mac

I guess if it comes don to dollars and cents, our owner is probably just going to say "F**K It" and get the slightly cheaper PC setup. I'm the only one who really understands Macs here - everyone else really just has to take my word for it. Frankly I don't really care at this point - I just need a damn upgrade.

KC0GRN

Yes the processors are almost identical these days (good business for intel and AMD I suppose), however the bios and chipset are most likely different. And if Windows doesn't have a driver for the chipset in your mac, things could get screwy, as it will try to use the most similar one it can find (which will work for about 80-95% of what you're using Windows for).

I went into the "Meeting" this morning about what new computer workstation we are gonna buy - the owner already planned on getting TWO workstations - one Mac and one Windows. Problem solved. More than I was going to ask for, but...

I just ran 100 miles for a 10 mile race! SHEESH! These guys are great guys; but just once I wish we had a meeting with a pre-planned agenda. I wasted more than a few hours trying to figure out numbers for ONE computer to run everything.

You know, hardware is probably the best way to go man.

Servicing a computer on site is probably one of the better fields to get into. Lets see those guys from India fix a broken mouse, keyboard, monitor, or CPU remotely.

I was recently thinking I should try and get into mobile computing/communictions. Like a cell phone provider or something. I have my FCC GROL, so I can legally work on any devices that have an FCC label on them (check your mouse even those have that, lol).

I've never burned anything to CDs but pictures or copies of music CDs.

I'm downloading some tunes in MP3 format. Will those play on a regular CD player?

I've never bothered with an MP3 player because I didn't find a need for one.

Thus the need to know. Thanks!

no, you have to have a cd player that plays mp3's (lots of newer cars have them from the factory these days).

otherwise, you have to burn an audio cd. can't speak for anything else, but roxio's software has been able to do that for a long time,

Thanks. I'm burning one CD now and another when this is done. I'll have tunes driving north tomorrow morning!

I need to ask a favor ......

Does anyone have a DVR that can, and would be willing, to record the Olympics opening ceremonies for me?? Please - - Please!!

I am going camping to celebrate a friends major milestone and will miss the events. I LOVE the Olympics and all they embody and am very sad that I am going to miss it. I do not have Tivo, or DVR or anything that would allow me to do it myself.I have not missed an Olympic opening since I was a child and even traveled around Europe to see Olympic stadiums and sites. They mean a lot to me.

It would be greatly appreciated to anyone that is able to help me out. Compensation is negotiable...thanks!!

ok so I am having a problem with my brothers lap top!!!

No WiFi and when he\We hook it up to the Quest modem it says there is a IP Add. Conflict with another System on the Network!! GO figer its the only computer hooked UP???

No I am befudiled by this since I have only seen it once and all I did then was a reboot and it worked fine!!!

If its saying there's an IP address conflict, you probably have a static IP address assigned to either the wifi connection or your wired ethernet port. I guess though if you rebooted and it fixed it, maybe it wasn't...

how do I get photos with the RED x to open again?

help.....!
Thu, 08/21/2008 - 10:55 AM Permalink
Mad_Dach5und

A red X means the photo file is missing - more then likely, the image was NOT the original photo - but a LINK to the original photo. I'd try right-clicking on the red 'x' and see if you get the option to "View Properties". See if there is anything under the 'location' line that could give you an idea where it went on your hard drive.

If you are trying to view internet images, some of those items change every day - a link to an item on the NET may work fine for only a couple hours, and then the web site changes and POOF it's gone.

If you are copying images off of web pages, my best advice is click-and-drag the photo OFF the web page and onto your desktop or an open folder. Then you have an actual file directly on YOUR computer. I've lost count how many people use the mouse right-click "Copy" and "Paste", only to find out all they copied and pasted was a link and not an original image. The click-and-drag seems to work better for e-mail attachments too.
Thu, 08/21/2008 - 11:20 AM Permalink
KC0GRN

Try right clicking on the red x, then select "Properties".

Highlight the URL address (like I did in this example). Copy it, and paste it into your web broswer address bar.

That should bring it up. if it doesn't, it's possible it's gone or the server it's stitting on is having problems.

Anyone in here ever used Retrospect as a file backup program?

I'm just looking for feedback and any alternative programs you think I should try at work for data storage. The newest version is a real turd!

nope. i was a netbackup guy myself.

you're looking at something on the level of backupexec i take it? i can say i've used it, although it was an older version, and i liked it. what are you looking at it for? desktops, 1 server, multiple servers, etc.?

Mad_Dach5und

Actually out IT guys back up most of the company's vital data on the server using daily DAT backups - mine is simply for compression, archiving, searching and retrieval of graphic files essentially from one desktop. I do a bulk backup of "Done" jobs about every two weeks. We've been using DVD-R disks for the last several years. We just got a deal and purchased 200 Sony 1-16x DVD-R disks.

I have Toast and other software burning programs, and with the new Apple "Time Machine" in the system software, technically I don't even need Retrospect anymore. Its just that everything we've archived for the last 10 years is in Retrospect format.

All the other programs work on these disks - but not Retrospect. The problem with Retrospect is that every newer version requires a firmware upgrade for the DVD burner in order to work. Dantz originally designed the program FOR Macs, but when EMC bought them out a couple years ago, things went to hell.

The firmware upgrades for the standard Mac (Pioneer) DVD drives are ONLY written in Windows format. I had to update firmware four times on one drive just to get it to work somewhat. That involves disconnecting the drive and installing it on a windows machine somewhere else in the plant to update it.

I've already pissed and moaned a lot in the Retrospect forum on their website - I guess I still feel the need to complain a bit more. Is it Pioneer's fault, or Retrospects for not making a compatible program? I dunno.
Fri, 08/29/2008 - 11:56 AM Permalink
ares

hmmm. were it me, i'd consider pulling all the work off the retrospect discs and taking advantage of the time machine feature of the mac.
