"The House voted 410-1 to give a Congressional Gold Medal to ``Peanuts'' creator Charles Schulz, who died in his sleep Saturday. The 77-year-old cartoonist's last strip featuring Snoopy and the gang was published in Sunday's papers."
green (doing a Snoopy dance... WHICH IZZ ON ONE'S TOES...)
Well I don't know that I could get enough out of #1 to warrant picking up a shovel yet! :) I did play with some of the words and that ol' anagram solver and ad infinitum makes: find minutia! That doesn't bode well for this year's clues, lol! We've got to dig deep this time and find the little stuff I guess :)
It's way to early to put much into clue number 1. Other than it's in St. Paul some place. Don't read to much into the first couple of clues. Unless you just can't stand not to be out in the cold.
Hello all! Last night was fun! I agree that over analyzing the first clue is normally fruitless, but it's just so much fun to actually start using our noodling skills that I just can't help myself! I like the wedding tie-in to Como a lot, probably because I myself am planning a wedding(though it was there just a few years ago). I too was thinking the ballerina idea or maybe just a shoe. Green, I love the idea of the clue leading to Snoopy dancing on his toes! Very fun. And several of the parks now have snoopys in them (highland, phalen, como, etc).
Tiny Thunbs - I second that! I was thinking about that this morning...how am I gonna stay up till midnight, and then get up at 4:30? Should I even bother with these first few clues (you never know when something's gonna *hit* you just the right way)?.....
Maybe I'll get Dad to take care of all the house/kids stuff in the evening, and get some shuteye from like 6:00-10:00.....
Napping after work, that's a good idea. I wonder if I'd be able to get up for work and still be functional in the mornings? If only I could just take all the days off work, then I wouldn't have to worry about it. As it is, I think I'll only be able to manage 1-2 days off when the digging is at it's height.
I don't give a ratz-back end what Inks types. Ter's doing a Snoopy dance o'delite as I type, I just KNOW she izz! She's saying, "I TOLD you there'd be a reference somehow to Snoopy/Schultz!"
Inks, are YOU the Wisenhiemmer that gave me "The Medallion" last nite??????? I seem to remember you slipping me another little surprise in a year past...
Wouldn't it be so cool if everything you needed to find the med was actually all in the first clue? I think Ma Press should hire allison to write the clues, then we know it'd be a good hunt every year!
But then Allison couldn't Dig. I think he'd turn the yob down. I know I would. I used to noodle the idea o'applying at Mom Press. I guess I still mite, if they'd hire me in Feb, lay me off rite Bee4 The Hunt, and then re-hire me again in Feb. But that would Bee asking a lot.
Otay, otay... You guys just keep laughing at me. But ittiz as PLAIN as the big black nose on Snoopy's face that the first clue is referring to either Snoopys and/or Charles Schultz. Besides, he was much beloved - one was, one still izz. And who's to say "duel" isn't for "two", or twice? And he was from St. Paul, which The Clue izz saying that's where The Med izz - in the city.
I will be validated come the end o'The Hunt. YEWBETCHA!!! (I think...)
Greg and all the smarties that can noodle well say, "Don't read too much into the clues and the simpliest answer is usually it."
St. Paul, gold, keep on toes, June. There you have it.
Oh, don't bet on that. I'd much rather write the clues than have to dig. Its fun figuring out the clues, but I think its even more fun 9for me) to write them. I liked making the Mock Hunt. I would have made more but just had trouble finding the time, or maybe it was motivation as there were some other things I wanted to do at that point. What I do find odd, though its probably a coincidence, is that a few days ago I posted that the ideal set of clues should allow someone to find the thing by the second clue, if they take (and I quote) a bold interpretation of the clues. And then what do we see here in clue #1? Still, I'm sure this clue had to have been written before I said that.
So Green, I've been looking at the list of snoopy statues. How does "key to my heart" (with all this gold, wedding stuff)in Como work for ya? Or we could also consider "jumpin' for joy" in Mattocks Park with your dancing on toes idea?
Go through the cold and prepare to be bold Or you won't find the secret item Our beloved St. Paul is the place for gold (golden anniversary=50) Dig elsewhere and you'll search ad infinitum (infinity is represented by a sideways 8) Last year(00) at Newell our fate was most cruel Unfortunately the game ended too soon (ended on clue 7) Come now and prepare for a much tougher duel(2 people in a duel) Keep on your toes(10) or you'll hunt until June(6th month)
Add them altogether and you get 83, the year it was in Phalen, so its CLEARLY in Phalen.
or if we look at the hockey idea (duel) (skaters keep on their toes?)(through the cold and bold as Dad mentioned earlier I think), we could look at "slapshot" snoopy at Highland by the indoor rinks. I'm just full of over-analytical noodling today!
Hello, Hunters! I guess one of the most important things we should all be asking ourselves is "Did I buy a button and send the registration in before January 25?" I enjoyed the special section of the PP pertaining the the Hunt. It's so nice to see where the meds been hidden in the past years. I haven't done much noodling with the clue, but I do know they're expecting us to really suffer this year. I think the first clue already sounds more of a challenge than the past few years. We do have great ground cover this year compared to last year which helps the hunt last. Was very disappointed last year. Digging at Newell and looking around to see people packing up their shovels and walking away. My heart just sunk into depression.
so Green, if it's at highland, at what point during the hunt will they be moving it to the actual hiding location for some other chump to find it instead of you? =)
allison, great noodling to point it to phalen! I'm surprised Green's not jumping all over it! I'm betting that our clue writer can't count though, because they threw out some numbers last year which had me thinking the med was 25 paces from the bench swing, but of course it was 35 paces. Just my luck!
I understand the clues will henceforth be sold an hour earlier at the PP building. A bit of an insult to those of us who subscribe to the paper IMHO. Oh well, presumably there will be a 'mole' who will post the clues here promptly after 11 so that I can tell you all what they mean (I would go get them myself (with further grumbling), but I work in downtown MPLS until 11PM.
Ok...all you hunters this year...where IS it?! I would like you all to know that this will be my 4th year digging. I have always ended up in THE park, just not found THE medallion. BUT, Allisonwondrland and others are on my team now...so, I would be willing to bet we will find it!
So, where do "we" think it is?? Phalen, Highland Park, or maybe Battle Creek Park??? Mmmm...or Mounds...or ??? Well, you tell me!!
Ad – advertisement, after date, in the year of the Lord, assistant director, athletic director
Infinitum – without boundaries, limitless, immeasurably great or small, unbounded space, time, or amount, godlike,
Place of Gold – money, wealth, yellowness, bank, mine, moneybag, billfold,
Duel – Single combat, monomachy, satisfaction, affair of honor, feud, skirmish, fight one’s way, brawl, broil, riot, fought with weapons in front of witnesses
Toes – front part of a foot or hoof; to touch, reach, or drive with the toe; prepare to act, alert, bottom, foot
hopefully some faithful crew member will post it early for us! it normally happens now with cell phones and all. Though sometimes the transcribing misses a word or doesn't let you see it in the normal stanza form which often reveals clues by how things are laid out. If not, we all hang out, anticipating until it shows at midnight. Misery loves company!
Of course, I have to mention the most obvious park "Battle Creek". last time the writer of the clues spelled out anything was Battle Creek and "duel" means, for the most part, to "Battle". Is it too soon to give us the park. Not really. They can tell us the same thing in 4 or 5 clues before we finally group all the information together to get the park.
place of gold near a bank? is there a historic place where gold used to be kept in the olden days? or a reference to Palace St? What are your thoughts of your definitions, etc. Treasure Digger?
TT, in the olden days, the diggers would keep their golden nuggets in bags or some type of leather pouch with strings. Today, banks or investing in the stock market may be considered places. Mid times, back yard in a jar or in one's mattress.
It was great seeing all of you at the "Pre-Dig Gig" last night!
Ter, this Joe's for you!

Inks, this lepoard can't change her spots!
And lettuce not forget "June"...
And Good Marning!
Hi again all-
I know that the clue probably says almost nothing, but I love to consider all angles :)
I think it is near the gate in Como (all the wedding references) where every St. Paul bride gets their picture taken.
OR in some very obscure place because of the word bold.
OR just ignore me because I was up to late last night and I am rambling.
Morning All
It was a lot of fun last night at the pre hunt bash. But let us all remember what the clue writer said. Last year the med was found way to soon.
That is why the pity party took place. On that note we will see you all out in the park.
Is Tim the hunter out there? You know who I am.

I wish they'd go back to the two clues a day model. This waiting until midnight is going to be the death of me!
Hiyall!
Tiny Thunbs - I second that! I was thinking about that this morning...how am I gonna stay up till midnight, and then get up at 4:30? Should I even bother with these first few clues (you never know when something's gonna *hit* you just the right way)?.....

Ok, it's not taped to a mailbox downtown.....got that checked off.
Are you sure you checked all the mail boxes DD?
Marning, Tiny, Mom and DDave!
Whew! (wiping sweat off brow) DDave you saved me a TON o'work! I just KNEW it was taped to a mailbox downtown! ;>
Nice Joe!, Tiny!

JOE!!!! And I didn't even try!
Wouldn't it be so cool if everything you needed to find the med was actually all in the first clue? I think Ma Press should hire allison to write the clues, then we know it'd be a good hunt every year!
Green, I think the med will be in a dog bowl just for you!
Tim the Hunter, you there??

allison, you ARE the clue writer! you're so devious, you just want us to think that you're not! we're on to you! =)
So Green, I've been looking at the list of snoopy statues. How does "key to my heart" (with all this gold, wedding stuff)in Como work for ya? Or we could also consider "jumpin' for joy" in Mattocks Park with your dancing on toes idea?
Clue #1 by the numbers:
Go through the cold and prepare to be bold Or you won't find the secret item Our beloved St. Paul is the place for gold (golden anniversary=50) Dig elsewhere and you'll search ad infinitum (infinity is represented by a sideways 8) Last year(00) at Newell our fate was most cruel Unfortunately the game ended too soon (ended on clue 7) Come now and prepare for a much tougher duel(2 people in a duel) Keep on your toes(10) or you'll hunt until June(6th month)

GADS!!! 13.75 hours into it and I'm already losing my mind!!!
Well if I was the clue writer this year, and I wasn't anywhere to be found, that would look awfully suspicious, wouldn't it?
Besides, we all know Pat P. is the clue writer, that's why it was in Newell last year!
Could also be at a rec center this year since those aren't actually parks.
Ittiz Highland. Has a Snoopy and Sara Jane Olson (duel identity) lives near there.

Does anybody remember my password?
new daddy, where did you go playing with trains yesterday (and how would that have been more important than the bash :-)?
Well, I don't think its really at Phalen. That was kind of a joke.
Now I'm a chump! ROFLOLPMP!!!
Look who's talking, Ares! We could'a carried you outta your car!
Hi, Treasure.
Keep laughing you guys, just keep laughing.

Are there any famous battles that are streets around any of the parks in Ramsey County? Anyone want to share thoughts?
TT, in the olden days, the diggers would keep their golden nuggets in bags or some type of leather pouch with strings. Today, banks or investing in the stock market may be considered places. Mid times, back yard in a jar or in one's mattress.
