Pre-Dig Gig, Rehash Bash and other Cooler events

I did get enough for the lodge and was even able to funnel some back to 3M for the money he spent on prizes, so that all worked out well.

It might just have to be that the Rehash Bash is set up to be a 2 part event. I even miss some aspects of the old way where you got to go to the park and see the hiding spot and such, but I also like the indoor version where people are free to hang out longer without getting too cold.

I really think that it is easier to eat and socialize when you aren't battling the elements. The nice thing about the lodge is that you aren't racing the clock to eat your chicken wings before they freeze. I think that it would be nice to see the spot where the medallion was hidden, but I guess the idea of keeping the fantasy alive in my head of the medallion wedged in some shapely woman's cleavage is something that would be ruined if I actually got to see where the medallion was really hidden. That might just be me though.

I miss smelling like wood smoke ...

Anytime anyone wants to smell like wood smoke, come north. We have pit for fire and lots of wood.

Let's have a "pre-hunt" party next year on the night the first clue comes out for the water cooler gang. We could meet at some local eating establishment. Someone in the group could wait at the Pioneer Press building and get the first newspaper out and bring it over to the group and read the first clue to the rest.

Next year during the hunt, how about everyone in the water cooler gang wrapping a band of duct tape around the left sleeve of their jackets while digging so the rest of us will know which ones are in the water cooler gang? You can use duct tape for everything else; this would be the newest use!

From what I remember, around the time of the Conway hunt, maybe the Cherokee hunt, we wore white items on our arms.

Yup. That started with the 98 hunt. Got bigger with the Conway hunt.

personally, if we've got a park where there's an indoor facility we can take over that's the ideal situation. but i also remember phalen and como being killer and almost everyone being gone by about 1. and that sucks.

The year at Conway and the year at Marry'em worked out nicely as we got the use of the rec center. I agree with that idea.

But even Battle Creek was so cold and damp. It was the damp that just about did us in.

And Penny just about froze to death there. Poor thing.

In hingsight, we should have asked about using the Phalen rec center. I think they would have been open to that idea.

Battle Creek was a weenie-shrinker of an afternoon. That wind straight out of the North didn't really help, either.

I still love the idea of an outdoor picnic. Maybe just some more preparedness would help. Can anyone wrangle a generator to keep the Crock Pots humming?

I've got a 15 ft x 20 ft tarp that could work for a nice wind break just about anywhere with enough bungee cords. I've got a small propane grill, and if my brother is not out ice fishing I could probably steal his two propane sunflowers (need a tank for one).

Heck, we can get up in the dead of night and scramble out to a dark park to look for the puck, I'd think we could still picnic outside.

Last year (2007) was an exception for sure, though - even the Mason Lodge was cold THAT afternoon. Was it about 1 below or something like that?

I had a white scarf tied around my arm. After a couple of weird looks when approaching others wearing white, I figured I would just wait for others to approach us.

I know it was You Dig? by the end of that hunt, but I think you're right CM. It was something else earlier.

At Como, Mom and Dad brought big propane heaters. Wright Winger actually caught his clothes on fire getting too close.

The crock pots being plugged in hasn't been a problem as we always found electricity in the park. It's how quickly anything hot gets cold once out of the crock and onto a plate.

The difference between hunting and picnicing is when hunting, we're moving. When picnicing, we tend to stand around to visit.

I prefer to be warmer and have time to enjoy others.

What I propose is this: Potluck indoors - and then a continuation for those wishing to do so in the park or an eatery or bar near the park. The exception would be if we get another hunt where there is indoor shelter to use.

And then a picnic in the park gathering during warmer weather - maybe before the summer campers head north every weekend. Early May? Later April?

I originaly was thinking saturday would be better, but have since changed my mind and think it should stay on sunday. I like that it is after the Parade. But then again, anyone that goes to the victory dance sat night dont show up. hmmm..

I really like the idea of a two part thing. The picnic/potluck indoors and then go to the park afterwards. Great ideas!!

we did white on our arms for Newell... but we only did it for 2 days... we figured we were already easy to pick out with the face-paint on....

I know for a fact, that we scared somebody from the CC, out of the park that year... we thought we were the only ones there, at like 2 or 3 in the morning, and noticed somebody with a white band on their arm, up the hill from us.... so we yelled "you dig?!?!"...

they took one look at us, and took off running....

Just wanted to thank 3M for organizing the door prizes :wink: (great job being creative and all!) and me2 for the plates and plaques. When my house gets painted, it's going up on the wall. :grin:

I heard there could be a possibility that Matty B's might be closing???? Slow business downtown and RNC didn't hold up to the revenue expectations.

Should we call now and reserve the basement at McGovern's for the PDG??? We can always cancel later......

I hope they dont close. That would suck. If they do I suggest we just go and take over at McGoverns. Who needs a reservation? With my new job, I don't know what my scheduale is even going to look like.

McG's is cool... however, I for one, refuse to return to Great Waters, for pre-clue festivities throughout the hunt.... Wild Times, or the Hat Trick, are my two choices.

Talked with Rose at Matty B's... She would LOVE to have us back!

I said the rumors are flying that Matty B's may close its doors - She said that if we know something to let her in on it because there is no such talk at all...

So if we want to "claim our spot" I would be more than happy to set it up for 2009...

I think we should go with the assumption that they will be open and reserve Matty B's. If something changes, then we'll do something else.

Great, I walked by there last week but they were closed and changed their hours. glad to hear we can still keep them. I wouldn't want to move if we don't have to. I reserve the coatcloset first.
