12 days including Election day (and not counting today)

I guess I should've tried to apply for an advertising job a year ago... sheesh!

Advertising trade magazines don't talk a great deal about political ads, because they whore themselves out to everyone and anyone equally. They're usually thrown together and produced practically overnight - whatever way the wind happens to be blowing...

MCCAIN VOLUNTEER 'ATTACKED AND MUTILATED' IN PITTSBURGH...

http://kdka.com/politics/McCain.Campaign.Worker.2.847449.html

According to police, Ashley Todd, 20, said she was robbed at an ATM at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street in the Bloomfield area around 9pm Wednesday after leaving a Republican phone bank.

Todd told police that the suspect, described only as a dark-skinned African-American man about 6'4", stole $60 from her and became enraged after seeing a bumper sticker supporting Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain on her car.

Todd, who is from Texas, said the suspect put a knife to her neck and demanded money.

Todd told police that the man became very angry after noticing the McCain sticker on her car and began punching and kicking her.

After repeatedly hitting, kicking and threatening her, Todd told police that the man carved a "B" in her cheek.

With $605 million already, Obama seeks only $10 more from each of us...

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/10/obama-money.html

Having hauled in a record $208,333 every hour of every day last month -- $150 million in all -- plus a few more unreported millions so far this month, Barack Obama is worried that he might come up short in the political money war with the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket.

Just to relieve himself of that $150 million before the polls open, Obama will have to spend $12.5 million a day.

But he needs some more.

And, according to an e-mail plea to supporters, tonight's the absolute deadline to donate $10 more and receive your special edition Official Obama-Biden car magnet.

I think most reasonable people realized it was highly suspicious. Of course that wouldn't include Matt Drudge and the right wing blogosphere who ran with it and reported it as fact instead of an allegation.

Has anyone ventured into WOT Reborn... again? I tried wading into their waters yesterday, but wow, I won't go there again. Those dudes so self righteous and extremely right wing it makes my stomach turn.

I caught one of them (and ratted them out) posting the picture of the campaign assault victim backwards so the "B" read correctly when virtually every news outlet (including Drudge and Fox News) has it shown correctly as a 'backwards' or upside-down 'B'.

My recommendation is to just lurk and read if you go in there. No use bringing matches into the powderkeg.

after careful consideration of this sales tax increase, (and seeing a poster up at Cub back in August when i bought our state fair tickets) there's no way i'm voting for this thing.

several years ago we created this thing called the minnesota state lottery, which was advertised as having the proceeds benefit our natural and environmental resources. The poster i saw at cub got me thinking. let's see where our lottery proceeds really go:

from the lottery's 2006 annual report:

ticket sales: $449million

gross profit: $121million

portion to environmental fund: $32million

portion to fish and game fund: $10million

portion to natural resources fund: $10million

portion to state general fund: $68million

in other words, the lottery, whose funding i am a frequent contributor to, is providing a lot more subsidizing to the state general fund than what the advertising for it would lead lottery ticket purchasers to believe.

this of course, is perfectly fine. but then don't come back saying we need another sales tax increase to benefit the projects that the lottery proceeds are sold to minensotans as benefiting, when in fact 60% of it doesn't.

http://wcco.com/goodquestion/minnesota.environmental.bill.2.847636.html

The signs are in people's lawns, the commercials are constantly on television, urging Minnesotans to "Vote Yes" for the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. But "Doesn't the lottery money already pay for the environment?" asked Minneapolis resident Andrew Savoca.

"Absolutely, it goes to support the environment," said Susan Thornton, the state of Minnesota employee who directs the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Thornton and her agency's staff review all of the funding requests that come to the trust fund, to decide which proposals to fund.

"Right now, we have $100 million of proposals for $25 million that are available," said Thornton.

The Minnesota Lottery sends 60 percent of its profits to the general fund. The remaining 40 percent goes to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. That breaks down to about 7 cents of every dollar spent going for the environment trust fund, according to Thornton.

Savoca said he spends approximately $80 a week on lottery tickets. That means he's sending $5.60 to the environment.

"That's not as much as I thought," said Savoca.

According to Thornton, the $25 million in the trust fund is not the main source of funding for the environment, not by a long shot.

"The trust fund can provide less than one-half of one percent.... It's a small part [of the total budget spending on the outdoors and environment]. It was always meant to supplement the regular budget. It was meant for acceleration, for innovation, for projects of long term benefit," said Thornton.

The trust fund tries to focus its grant efforts on various topics each year.

"So we might be focused on groundwater issues one year, and land acquisition the next," she added.

The majority of state funding for the outdoors and conservation comes from the state's general fund. But proponents of amending the state constitution say that effort is not enough.

"Spending on conservation and environment is at a 30 year low as a percentage of the state budget," said Charlie Poster, Communications Director for Vote Yes Minnesota.

"In 1999, the state spent $239.4 million in general funds for conservation and environment. This represented 2.18 percent of a total general fund budget of $10.98 billion. By 2009, the state allocated only $174.8 million in general funds for conservation, barely 1 percent of a total general fund budget of $17.4 billion," he said.

Opponents of the proposal have cited the 3/8 percent increase in the state sales tax as a problem as well as a philosophical opposition to the use of the state constitution to direct budget decisions.

If the lottery provides $25 million a year for the environment, the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment would provide $243 million a year to clean water, the outdoors, and parks. An additional $59 million a year would go to arts and culture. Supporters estimate the average Minnesota household would pay less than $60 more a year in sales taxes.

Don't fall into the Palin trap

By Vicki Trytten

My family recently returned to Minnesota, the home of our birth, after nearly 13 years of dairy farming outside of Wasilla, Alaska. The straw that broke the camel's back - our Alaska Governor Sarah Palin!

It's a long story how we got to Alaska, but the main message I want you to focus on is not to let Sarah Palin mislead you and our country like she did us and the dairy industry in Alaska!

The State of Alaska owned and operated the only dairy processing plant in South Central Alaska, through a repossession back in the 1980s. The State kept operating the plant because of the traumatic effect it would have been to close it. Closing the plant would not only affect dairy farmers, but grain farmers, the elevators, the equipment and repair shops, and the work force from the farm helpers to the truck drivers, and beyond. So the State kept the dairy processing plant open.

Somehow along the way, the C.E.O. was allowed to reign over control of the plant, and while he did a great job at saving the plant and turning it into a profit making business, the business and its employees became the center of attention over the dairy farmers making a profit. Hence the price paid to dairy farmers remained stagnant and the dairy industry began to crumble. Even a decades-old University dairy closed its doors!

Despite the outcry to the state to take back control of the business, and its original intent to be the infrastructure to the dairy industry, each successive governor continued to lack the foresight to do something about this problem, choosing to create 'boards and commissions and audits and studies' to determine what to do! So, the plant continued to grow,, expanding into water bottling, and orange juice, yogurts and various milk drinks, but due to the growth of the sales, the plant was now processing more Washington State milk across its assembly line than Alaskan milk because it was cheaper to purchase (the plant could buy a lesser value milk - 2% and skim - as Alaskan milk supplied all the higher butterfat product needed, purchased from a milk handler versus farmers).

Then came the increase in Washington milk prices, a law disallowing purchase from milk handlers, and the dramatic increase in fuel costs! The plant all of a sudden needed more Alaskan milk than 'outside' milk, but guess what? It was nearly gone, with only 5 local dairy farms remaining in operation.

So along came Sarah Palin! She just came from being Mayor of Wasilla, and looked good when she challenged the oil & gas board 'big boys'. So, when she began running for Governor she led us all to believe she would 'save the dairy industry' and 'keep Matanuska Maid Creamery (the name of the State owned plant) open'! We all believed her, and worked hard for her, and I even got on the State Creamery Board and offered my assistance in any way I could help her! But guess what....She Lied!

She didn't listen to us after she was elected Governor, when all the dairy farmers told her we wanted to move the creamery back to its roots, into a smaller scale version of what it had become, and to use State funds until it was up and running and then they could sell the monster plant in Anchorage to recapitalize the funds used in the transition. (We even wanted to take over the operations of the plant as a dairy farmer cooperative, to hire a plant manager that would truly serve the dairy industry!) This would have been a 'win-win' situation, but Sarah touted her need to 'save the state money' and closed the plant down, and we were the sacrificial lambs that were slaughtered to show how great she was!

So, with my vote being the only dissenting vote on the board to close the plant, our family sold our cows for $400 per head and leased our farm to a family who wanted to try and last until the new milk plant opened.

We then left the State of Alaska in 2007 and have now made a new life back in Minnesota, land of our roots, and are very happy to have left Alaska.

This would have been fine, but you all know what happened next - Sarah Palin is now the VP candidate of the Republican Party. We just can't seem to be rid of her!

So I tell you all, do not fall into the same trap as we did! And to hear the truth as we know it and have lived it!

Vicki Trytten lives on a beef and dairy farm near Mabel.

I don't think of it as much as a lie, but during the campaign you make your proposals. You have to sell them. The best way to sell an idea is to give you ownership of it. "Let's go take your new car for a spin", "Here's what I will do for you". Is it misleading, yes. Is it a lie, not really. They can definitely want to do many things, but because of checks and balances no one can walk in and just do what they want.

Anything that the president wants to do must first be passed by Congress.

It was a hard fought election.... filled with ups and downs...

but in the end, somebody else won.

Im sorry to say, that I wont be living in that big ass famous house, in Washington DC, for the next few years.... and I wont be fulfilling any of the promises that I made, which I said would come true, if I won.

No cookies for you.

Now we must look forward to the future, and carry on with some other guy in charge.

But I suppose thats okay..... he's more qualified anyways.
