If a storm blows in, there's always going to be some idiot who wants to finish the next hole before they get off the golf course.

If just so happens there's a lot more golfing done in Florida than other states - and a lot more old farts who can't move very fast...

Someone saw a statistic that men are considerably (not sure of the percentage) more likely to get hit by lightning, and they stated " I wonder why that is"

Easy I said, the sirens go off and what is the first thing a guy does? Grab his camera and go outside to see it...

I just wear sunglasses....

they're supposed to protect against bright light, and lightning is pretty bright, man....

seems logical to me.

plus, I look cool when i'm out in the rain that way too...

I am a certified skywarn storm spotter....
Thu, 08/21/2008 - 8:12 AM Permalink
Wicked Nick

how do you get to be one of those?
Thu, 08/21/2008 - 9:27 AM Permalink
KC0GRN

Go to a 2 hour class, take a quiz. It helps to have your HAM radio license, otherwise you don't get a spotter number. That's mainly because they don't have a phone number to call reports into. You can either submit a report via a radio (that's when you use your spotter number to authenticate yourself), or now you can submit reports online at the National Weather Service website. Still, you can take the class regardless and get "certified".

Mad_Dach5und

More like "Certifiable". You just went through that training to justify the reason why you sprint outside with a camera every time the sirens go off.

Still, of all the volunteer / civic duties out there, Storm Spotter has got to be one of the coolest.

KC0GRN

Lol actually, out of all the volunteer positions around, it's probably the easiest/laziest one to get into.

I have yet to actually make a report on a radio or even on the internet, and I've been certified for a few years. The first thing they tell you in the class is the major difference between a storm spotter and a storm chaser is that a spotter reports conditions from where they are, they don't run out to where the action is.

So essentially if I want to be a storm chaser, all I have to do is get in my car and drive off in the direction of a storm. Heh.

Ive seen them on The Tonight Show and stuff...

Yeah, kinda spendy vacation for chasing storms. Plus, you don't really get the same feeling when you're in a tour bus.

Of course, they only take a couple people at a time. I've seen some chase tours that take vans or buses. To me, that would just be too much.

I do know if I went chasing on my own, I'd want some beater of a vehicle that got decent gas mileage. Given all the hail and what have you, I just wouldn't want to take a nice car/truck.

If I'm near a tornado I'd like a nice HEAVY SUV thank you! I don't wanna fly away like a pop can.

Mikey - You've seen the Wizard of Oz? The pictures of the Hugo tornado this spring? You think a heavy SUV would be safe?

During the first of a powerful thunderstorm a couple years ago, we saw a fairly large car get blown off the road into the ditch along 35 just north of the Pine City exit.

I don't want to be anywhere near a tornado!

storm knocked the power out here on the East Side, about an hour ago (12:30 am), for like 15 minutes, or so

Power was obviously out in Columbia Heights last night.

Of course, that doesn't surprise me, this building is on such a bad circuit anyway. All it takes to knock the power out here is a butterfly landing on one of the power lines in the area.

The storm knocked out my cable last night. I think I had a panic attack because I was unable to end my evening with cable news and Huffington and Politico online.

But I got to bed early.

so we end our evenings, as soon as every channel turns to infomercials... :coolfrown:

Hmm.. you know, I really ought to look into getting a job in a field that gets affected by the weather.. I mean, it'd probably be awful when you have extra to do during that time, but it seems like it would be semi-stable employment. Maybe..

wait a minute, mikey, you're not a sparky....

Little Johnny is running around the house making life miserable for his mother. She says, "Johnny, why don't you go across the street and watch them build that house. Maybe you can learn some neat things." Johnny disappears for about four hours and returns later in the afternoon. "Did you learn anything interesting today?" his mother asks. "I learned how to hang a door," Johnny replies. Mom says, "That's great! How do you do that?" "Well, first you get the son of bitch. Then, you slap the piece of shit up there but it's too damn small. So you shave a cunt hair off here and a cunt hair off there and put the damn thing up." Johnny's mom is floored by his language. "You go to your room and wait until your father gets home!!" Later, Johnny's dad goes into his room and says, "I understand you got in a little trouble today." "All I did was tell Mom how to hang a door." "Why don't you tell me," Dad asks. "Well, first you get the son of bitch. Then you slap the piece of shit up there but it's too damn small. So you shave a cunt hair off here and a cunt hair off there and put the damn thing up". Dad screams, "That's it young man. You go get a switch from the back yard." Johnny looks at his dad and says, "screw you, that's the electrician's job!"

I'm fine deer hunting in a snowstorm - makes it easier to find blood trails - I just hate that sloppy rain/snow mix.

Check out the animation above right now. It's like a northern hurricane with rain on the front end and snow behind it.

Was anybody out there today when the big winds hit? Man was that a crazy 20 minutes as the front came through. All kinds of things knocked over in my neighborhood.

When you see that kind of counter-clockwise pattern, and there is snow, it is usually feet of snow, not inches.

Last time we got one like that up here, we got 5.5 feet of snow during a non-stop four-day snowstorm/blizzard.

Same thing with rains that hang in one place for awhile - those dang counter-clockwise weather patterns make for some concerning weather.

Now that the leaves are off the trees, I guess I'm ready for snow. Put my yard to bed this past week so bring it on.

One of my sons was driving on Military Rd heading to Afton today when the winds hit and he said he saw some trees blowing over.
