We got an ANCIENT computer here that runs the printer. We keep having intermittent problems with the four internal SCSI hard drives staying "connected". We've purchased extra drives and swapped them out - the problem is NOT going away.
This probably means we've got a card failure or cable failure. I need to find someone willing to WARRANTY one of these old cards before I can buy it for work.
Adaptec PCI Dual Wide Ultra SCSI Controller Card Model AHA-3940AUW
The place I got this picture from is selling one as-is with no warranty.
We'll probably need two cables for it as well. Here's a link, but I'm not sure if this is the same connector or not.
I would suspect the card before the cables, unless they've been yanked around alot.
Most likely the issue is the solder joints are getting bad (heat cycling in the computer over time tends to cause it). That especially explains the intermittent problem.
Is adaptec still in business? You might be able to seek a warranty with them, otherwise, where did you get the hard drives from? Perhaps they have something.
The whole monkeybusiness is a custom Unix job made by 3M years ago. Unfortunately the engineer that designed the system retired (or possibly died) and no resources have been put into upgrading it since about 1999.
I know heat IS an issue - we've basically left the side panel off the unit and a room fan partially blowing on it for about a year now. Helps a LOT to keep it cool.
After doing several tests of swapping cables and drive locations, it looks like the failure this time around may have been just the drive. I have gone through two hard drives from the same location in the last six months, which makes me think there may be more to it than just the hard drive. I swapped in another backup drive and it appears to be working. Next week - who the hell knows?
Hmm... yeah if it's that old, you're bound to run into hardware problems.
I think it's going to be very hard to find anyone that will warranty a 10 year old piece of hardware though... and obviously it sounds like upgrading is out of the question... I don't suppose you can talk them into a purchase without a warranty because of the age, can you? I think it's either buy a card without a warranty, or upgrade the system.
Question: This site seems to be having some serious issues recently is it going to be fixed by the time the hunt comes around? I can't post anything without refreshing and resubmitting and some pages are taking forever to load suddenly.
I was still having issues as of this morning I know it's been an on and off issue with erro messages and stuff I've seen others post about it so I know it's not all just me.
yeah I can load anything but pictures there isn't a link that I can find to add pictures or anything....I'm all connected but I cant find Iphoto on the mac....
We ended up with the macbook purly by chance. One of Mikes friend's need some cash quick so he sold us the laptop cheap,. We rarely used it but now that I have the Ipod I'm using it for that and only that. I just can't seem to figure the picture thing....
I assume that phones are different but how can I forward a text message to my e-mail that includes all of the replies? I can send them one at a time but it's a pain when you want the whole conversation. I have the Blackberry Storm if it makes a difference. Can anyone else do this on their phone?
Not really 'Basic' but hopefully it helps...

Then again.. maybe the site is scared of me.. kinda like when you take your car in to the mechanic and the problem mysteriously goes away...
I only remember 1 posting issue in the last year.
maybe its the time of day Im posting or something.

pg5-6, pg 31
first connect to computer with usb sync cable,
through itunes you would list pictures from iphoto on mac, or adobe photo album or photoshop elements or newer,
if programs don't popup, then usb port needs its own powered port hub
