Isn't that fun? I've had three of my entries published in BB. Not for a long time now though. I only remember that one of them was a tribute to Franklin Hobbs from Hobbs House on late night radio and one was a story about my son lending his football mouth guard to a friend who seldom got into a game and didn't have his when he was put into a game finally.
I send things sporadically to Bulletin Board. Have been published quite a few times over the past 10-15 years. The name "Suds" predates "Eags" and kind of stuck for that purpose. I
A while back a contributor attempted to add a new category to Bulletin Board entitled "That's What Friends are For". She told a story of two youngsters trading chewed gum.
That story reminded me of a time over 20 years ago when one of my sons played football on the local high school team. He had a buddy on the team who never got into a game. He suited up and sat on the bench week after week.
Late in the season the home team was trouncing the visiting team and the coach decided to finally put in the scrubs. He gave he nod to the son's buddy who, never having the need for it until this moment, had left his required mouth guard in the locker room. As my son was coming off the field, his friend called to him to throw him his mouth guard. Without giving it a second thought, this wonderful boy pulled it from his mouth and tossed it to his friend who put it in his mouth and ran onto the field.
It was a moment I'll never forget. We should all have friends like that.
It's 6:00 AM and I'm feeling nostalgic. I went and picked up my morning Pioneer Press from the front porch this morning and there on the front page is Franklin Hobbs' obituary.
The news made my heart skip a beat and took me back to those carefree, innocent days of my youth. It was the early '60's and my first true love and I would sit up for hours in the evening listening to Hobbs House. I especially remember an evening in Minnehaha Park parking lot waiting for a lunar eclipse with Hobbs soft voice and romantic music playing on the car radio.
I caught his show a couple of times after he'd moved to KEEY, but it wasn't the same. I wasn't young anymore, much less carefree and innocent, and the boy was long gone. I miss him, and I'll miss Franklin Hobbs.
I haven't found Hawkeye yet, and not sure how much I will get to hunt for the medallion, but I did find the keys to someone's Lexus today.
Actually the guy changing my oil found them when he removed the shield to get at the oil pan, and the keys fell out.
They don't belong to me or to anyone at the oil change place.
As I wracked my brain, trying to think of how they could have gotten there, I recalled something that happened when I was in MN in November...
Turns out, the keys belong to Vicky's neighbor/handyman, a hyper nerve-ending kind of guy who knocked on the door one cold morning when I was there for Thanksgiving, because I had started my car to let it run a bit, and the guy thought it sounded like my engine had no oil in it. He would not be convinced that everything was fine until I popped the hood and showed him the dipstick. Well, at some point, unbeknownst to me, when I was checking the oil, he laid the keys to his wife's Lexus on some surface under the hood. Why he had them in his hand, when he walked over, is beyond me - he was next door doing some kind of handyman thing and lives just in the next building. But for some reason, he lays his keys inside my engine compartment!
Well, those keys have been to Michigan, then round trip to MN and to MI again, and all the other driving around I've done. Probably about 2,700 miles, actually!
Vicky called the guy tonight, and sure enough, they are his keys. Apparently these things are really, really expensive to replace, so he is going to be very glad to have them back.
Now if I can just find Hawkeye and the medallion, I think that would make a pretty good hat trick!
My friends called me at 9:30 this morning to ask if I wanted to come over and see the owl. I couldn't, as I had some work to get done and then an appointment in town, but called them on my way home and the owl was still there! Actually, last I heard, he was still there at 6PM tonight. Very cool to see him so close up!
What a great video! I love how at 1:35 and around 2:00 you can't see the owl until the camera zooms in.
I posted my winter robin story and pictures on a web site that tracks robin migration and a school teacher emailed me and is useing my pictures in her classroom.
Hawkeye was pretty definitely sighted this morning, Saturday 2/7, in downtown Stillwater in the parking lot of the CUB business center on 3rd Street, headed for the historic courthouse building. While searching and distributing flyers, a man who saw the flyer said he saw Hawkeye about a week ago at Valley Floral (also on 3rd Street) but north of the courthouse/CUB business center parking lot.
Crews of people (at least six total) have been out all day searching and distributing flyers.
Anyone in the Stillwater/Houlton or Hudson/Roberts or Afton/Lakeland areas, please keep an eye out, and have my cell phone number handy - I have it on 24/7: 651-356-5470.
Once they get him, he may need some retraining, but there is every reason to believe he will do fine.
He was a happy dog who didn't run until he was in the care of the second set of strangers and in a foreign place. All he knows is that he was taken from the only home and owner he ever knew. Many human errors were made in this arrangement and transport, and many humans are expressing regret for those mistakes.
If the local citizens can keep the word out there, and sightings get called in to establish a pattern he is in, they hope to be able to rescue him, and then once he is home, his re-hab can start.
The good news is that there is no evidenced that he is becoming a nuisance or chasing/killing wildlife or anything like that. In fact, they think he is probably dumpster-diving in Stillwater and Hudson, and finding shelter at night along the riverbanks.
Recent news about a retriever, lost in Montana when frightened by a train whistle while his family was traveling, indicates the dog was found six months later and is now home and happy. No one knows where the dog was for those six months nor what he was doing. We hope for a similar happy ending for Hawkeye's story, only hoping not to have it take six months!
Carolyn picked up a stray in N.E. MPLS, yesterday....
no tags...
ended up bringing him to the vet over there, who was going to call the pound, to hold him....
Evidentlly he was pretty dirty, and full of leaves, cause the back-seat is disgusting....
what surprised me, was she said she stopped the car to see the dog, and he immediately rolled over like saying "scratch my tummy!!!", and he hopped right into the car too..
Im glad it wasnt me... I woulda brought him home, to clean him up, for a while...
His original owner lives in Brainerd. The dog was being transported to his new owner in Texas, when he was in the care of strangers, and the daughter's boyfriend took him out to do his biz, and the dog slipped his collar and bolted. That left him with no one in the area who knew him, and him not knowing the area. Luckily, there are about 10 people in the area who are dedicated to do what they can to keep the word out there, so sightings get called in, a pattern can be established, and hope that he can be lured in with food, or he will trust someone. If there is a good indication of where he is, they can try to have his former owner come down again (she has come down four times to try to find him) to try to call him in. She is young and very, very heartbroken at the turn of events.

one of the most frequent questions we got asked when trying to sell new subscriptions was "are you the one with the bulletin board?"....
:frown:  :frown:
I'm sure he misses you too J

Wish I'd taken "before" pics! The snow on the roofs was about waist-deep.
