Okay green.....you will like this one......for some reason when looking at these clues I can't get the the word Ottawa out of my head because of the letters starting each line.. Ottawa Ave runs N/S on the East side of Cherokee. Not saying it means anything, just giving Green some hope that it's in her park.
And not that the Clue Writer(s) since The Dynamic Duo o'Boxmeyer and Millett have been literal or used correct grammer (mine's in the kitchen making cookies...) but the Clue says the detentees, at the time o'the convention, were able to hear. I'd think those bad boys of long ago are incapable of hearing.
But, again. Too often I've read "referring to" in a Clue explination when the Clue 'said' something definitive. So, it could still be referring to boys in the detention home. Only thing is... Would they use the actual word, detention, in a Clue?
The more I noodle Clue #4 the more Chair-O-Key calls me...
I think the clue is refering to the pig or pitbull not the Palin aspect. I think thats the red herring but then again...Crosby was spelled out just as clearly in clue 2 a few years back so what do I know...
I'm off to work I will hopefully be feeling ok tonight as I want to come out and see you all...I just wish I didn't have this dratted cold!
Nope. The Medallion is never ever going to be at Kellogg! No matter what the clues say, I'm not digging at Kellogg again. If the clue says "Kellogg", I'm going to look at Battle Creek.
No kidding! Who said that the new Gov't center is closer to Swede Hollow than the County Workhouse is to Battle Creek?
Point of order - County Workhouse and Battle Creek (Maplewood) are ADJACENT properties - they can't get closer. There's a least a couple of office buildings (State DNR Offices, for one) and a parking lot between the New Gov't Center and Swede Hollow. Swede is somewhat adjacent to Metro State Univ., not the pigs, er, I mean the Cops.
I Agree with AW - I'd dig on Raspberry Island before I would dig in Kellogg Park.
Mad: thanks for doing that "Clues and Nothing But the Clues" folder on the PP boards. I have that in a separate tab next to this. I can just go back and forth without dealing with PP postings. (Although I peek now and then....)
Detention. Managing stormwater runoff by temporary holding and controlled release.
The process of collecting and holding back stormwater or combined sewage for delayed release to receiving waters.
A stormwater system that delays the downstream progress of stormwater runoff in a controlled manner. This is typically accomplished using temporary storage areas and a metered outlet device.
The modest homes of Swede Hollow nestled in the valley below mansions on Dayton's Bluff. Phalen Creek - named for the first white inhabitant, Edward Phalen - flowed the length of the valley. As the city grew, life for the residents of Swede Hollow remained primitive - fresh springs provided drinking water, electricity was never known and in true "Old World" fashion, the creek was their sewer.
Jim Sazevich: "Of course, the privy was an important part of their life, and it was built over the creek on stilts, and it had to project out enough into the creek. And of course, every time you'd get a heavy rain, that would make this very sedate creek a rushing torrent, and many of the privies would end up at the far end of the hollow... and would have to be retrieved by their owners!"
Mike Sanchelli: "One of these lower privies that was down by the small stream, now they were a little bit too handy for somebody to drop a flat rock into the water, which would make the water splash up into the privy. And you could hear a lot of swearing in Italian, and, I mean, it was unprintable even in Italian!"
With its clear spring water and cool caves for storage, Swede Hollow was a perfect place for brewing beer. Recognizing the valley's potential, Theodore Hamm started brewing at the north end of the Hollow in the 1860's. By 1894 the Hamm's brew house was an imposing five stories high, built of red brick and stone, with long rows of arched windows, ornate North Germanic gables, and a splendid baroque dome crowned by a cupola. At its opening, the expanded "Excelsior Brewery" drew a crowd of ten thousand curious people. One stop on the tour was the employees' refreshment room, where, claimed one newspaper, some workers fortified themselves with forty or fifty glasses of beer a day!
I have decided, after noodling more, #3 is telling us we need to see the caves on the east side that were made naturally by water and ice (Glacial River Warren, et al).
Well, in spite of the fact I'd rather dig with Kitch at Kellogg, I'll be at the Hollow from 11-1:30 today...can't imagine I could miss it, but who knows?
The creek in the Hollow is named after Phalen, whose name was actually spelled Phelan...keeping in mind the murder suspicions surrounding this person, is his name pronounced "failin'" or "felon"?
I'm off to work for a while. I might check out some parks afterwards. Then I'll be at Kieran's irish Pub in Minneapolis for Pub Quiz, and afterwards meet you all at Wild Thymes.
"According to Hollow resident, Nels M. Hokanson, there was friction between the groups during those years. He wrote vividly about the coming of the Irish: Some were Irish, and their numbers grew steadily along with their chickens, ducks, pigs, goats and other animals. Once the young men even brought some wild western horses, whose kicking and neighing disturbed our sleep for several nights. The combative Irish boys, whom father called the "damnable Irish," threw stones at the drum during Salvation Army services, they picked fights with Swedes and harassed me at every opportunity.
I know Kitch AW and Ian are probably gonna throw thing at me but I was working on this last night.
Kellogg park
clue 1 - says it's in Saint Paul
The Qwest (quest) bldg is close to maybe visible to Kellogg
up front = is close to pp or could mean frank as in Frank Kellogg
clue 2 - contests waged of yore= the PP held a contest in 1932 for the renaming of the newly reconstructed old 3rd St. The winning name was Kellogg blvd after senator Frank Kellogg.
clue 3 - naturally , water and ice = river valley
harbor of arbor= harbor is a structure that hold plants and vines. or harbor= view of harriet island marina
clue 4 - detention during convention= I believe the old Ramsey county jail next to the park was used during the convention as a temporary holding area for those arrested.
pig = metal plaques in wall/fence that shows Pigs Eye Parrant.
"No Fear" is a song by the Finnish alternative rock band The Rasmus, originally released on the band's sixth studio album Hide from the Sun on September 2, 2005. The single was the first one to be released from the album (August 29, 2005) and is the most popular song from the album.
It went to #1 on the Swedish Singles Chart and has been popular on many other chart lists as well. The music video also went number one on MTV Europe's Nordic chart list "UpNorth".
Interesting...I called Camo Terry during the PDG to see why they weren't there...had to leave a VM. He hasn't returned my call (also unusual). Now I just called him again...had to leave a VM.
Strange behavior for a businessman...they usually answer their phones. Plus he was friends w/Box!
Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....................
Guess what! Here's some free associating while brushing my teeth: Can't "detention" and "convention" be seen from the bluffs o'Chair-O-Key?
I'm not positive as I don't think I've ever looked, but I bet they can be...
How's that for great minds this AM?
Read on the Mom Press boards Jake was in Swede. Now, either I'm getting better at noodling or Jake is beginning to slip!
:goofy:

how come it took me this long to think of this??
damn i'm slow...

Article about Pigs Eye Beer ownership.

Early bidets!

the mansion was built by the kids of the family when mom and pop went to europe...
I thought Box did a Lost Twin Cities book, too..?
The creek in the Hollow is named after Phalen, whose name was actually spelled Phelan...keeping in mind the murder suspicions surrounding this person, is his name pronounced "failin'" or "felon"?

At that time the kids ran around in two groups called the "big gang" and the "little gang", and all the families looked out for each other's children.
Mabe a stretch for "Dell":
The Hollow was named by its earliest arrivals, Swedish peasants, who called it Svenska Dalen, or "Swedish Dale",
First words from clue 3:
"All Water In Approach"
my favorite noodle of that is the contest part and the dentention part.
I'm not sold on any of them at this point
Perfect view of it from Kellogg, Tater!
he hasn't shown up this year yet, none have.
strange behavior for the camoes.
And I think it's important they used "dell" as the term is usuall "hill and dale."
Strange behavior for a businessman...they usually answer their phones. Plus he was friends w/Box!

they're called fools.
but hey this isn't a political debate thread
