OLYMPIC SPIRIT SOARS FOR ELY 2016: LAST-MINUTE OLYMPIC BID BY MINNESOTA CITY ANNOUNCED
ELY, MINNESOTA — Ely, Minn., the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, has today announced it is offering a late-entry bid to host the summer Olympic Games in 2016. Watch the press conference at www.ely2016.com.
Though Chicago is formally nominated as the United States Candidate City for the 2016 Games, Ely plans to submit its paperwork immediately to the International Olympic Committee, finalizing its bid for the 2016 Olympics.
“We missed the first deadline for the bid by a couple of years, but we are optimistic,” says Roger Skraba, Ely’s mayor. “Our 1.3 million acres of untouched wilderness is beyond compare, so there’s plenty of room for Ely to host thousands of athletes and more than a million visitors, and we have lots of space for the facilities.”
Plans are already moving forward for Ely 2016. “We’re draining Miners Lake to create the first in-ground Olympic Stadium, carving seats into the rock,” says Mayor Skraba. Olympic Village? Yep. Table tennis? That too. “Lots of folks around here have ping pong tables in their basements. We won’t have any trouble pulling that event together,” said the mayor. “Peter Ueberroth says the time is right for the Games to come back to America in 2016, well, why not Ely?”
The International Olympic Committee has so far offered no comment to Ely’s announcement. “We look forward to working with those guys,” adds Mayor Skraba. “And we’ll extend a hand of friendship to Chicago too so they don’t feel too bad about losing. Ely would be more than happy to let the Windy City host an event or two, if they feel up for it. But they’ve got political problems of their own now, they might just be relieved to hand things over to us.”
I also accepted my nieces and nephews invitations to be on the "We're Related" feature.
Today, despite deliberately not joining any politically related sights, I got an e-mail - not a FB e-mail but a regular e-mail in my yahoo account, with the subject line:
"Barack Obama has confirmed you as a cousin on We're Related".
I'm LMAO.
It appears that someone pulled off a pretty good April Fools joke on Facebook!
When I tried to go directly to the We're Related feature, I get an error message saying they are trying to work out a few things...LOL.
thanks eags, Ive got a few places I'm networking through.
I can probably talk with you by phone or egram more indepth.
I worked recently with Ecolab as an Administrative Assistant.
But my background and resume hold a woman of many colors.
I've worked from managing fastfood, apartment complexs and video stores to Advertising and Marketing to Research and History to Admin work...with little things inbetween. I went for my real estate license 15 years ago (not licensed now though). I've sold perfume to Partylite. I do CANNOT do anything commission related right now. however lots of managing and customer service skills. I've got some experience here and some experience there but I'm getting older so I feel like I've done too many things. I like diversity I guess. I'm just open to many things so it doesn't matter to me if someone wants to know what Ive done but in reality I need someone just to tell me whats open at a company and I can say if I can do the work or not. I'm not closed minded to much cept Mc Donalds, small retail or grocer related - don't want those. I need something that will pay substantial to take care of my girls.
Taking applications to work the Ramsey County Fair... ideally would be 16yrs of age or older (we have had younger, but it depends on the individual). Would start the Monday July 6 through Monday July 13 and possibly also work the Thursday before the 4th of July. Wages I believe are $6 hr but I will double check...
Job would be grounds crew... lots of maintenance work, trash pick up, restroom cleaning, moving of benches, setup/breakdown of areas etc...
Let me know if there are any interested candidates...
There isn't much on the job board right now, but that changes every week, me2. Keep checking the employment link at www.wilder.org
If you find something you are applying for, let me know. I can't give work references because I haven't worked with you, but I could give a hiring supervisor the heads up that you've applied and from what I know of you, you'd be a good candidate.
I thought Min wage was like 6.75 now??? I guess I wouldnt know!! I havent worked min wage in like 20 years!!!! If I dont think I have ever worked for min wage!!
I know a few of us posted recently about Temple Grandin's books about animals.
Just thought you'd like to see this article. I'll have to let my in-laws in Detroit area know about her mother being the keynote speaking at an upcoming conference.
Oh crap - I'm sorry I forgot all about this... see what happens when I don't check-in on a regular base...
If this is still happening I may have to pass.. last year it was a Friday night start (which I could do), but if I remember AW was changing it to be a Saturday morning start - which I can't do now as I am obligated to go bowling with a bunch of Vulcans.. sorry guys!! :frown:
Slim- Things aren't looking too good for me and the 24hr hunt. Sections for ultimate was moved to that weekend, so I will be busy playing games during the day (both Sat and Sun). I can definitely help you guys out during the evening, and I will still be on your team if you need a 5th, but if you can round up 5 people who will commit to doing it all day just take them and I will stop by and help out whenever I can. I don't need the glory of actually being on the team... I already won this thing once with Spider Monkeys
Everyone else- Bfg and I are playing disc on Wednesday. Feel free to join us... not sure where (I say either Kaposia, North Valley, or Oakwood) or when, but I need to be home by 7 to get ready for track practice for ultimate.
I can't believe the Golden Ticket was in Dakota County!
Around age 10 my dad got me one of those Little Badass Compound Bow beginner kits. Of course, the first month I went around our place sticking arrows in anything that could get stuck by an arrow. Did you know that a 1955 40 horse Farmall tractor will take 6 rounds before it goes down? Tough sumbich.
That got boring, so being the 10 yr. old Dukes of Hazzard fan that I was, I quickly advanced to taking strips of cut up Tshirt doused in chainsaw gas tied around the end and was sending flaming arrows all over the place. Keep in mind this was 99.999% humidity swampland so there really wasn't any fire danger. I'll put it this way - a set of post hole diggers and a 3ft. hole and you had yourself a well.
Anyway, one summer afternoon, I was shooting flaming arrows into a large rotten oak stump in our backyard. I look over under the carport and see a shiny brand new can of starting fluid (ether). The light bulb went off. I grabbed the can and set it on the stump. I thought it would probably just spray out in a disappointing manner . . lets face it... to a 10 yr. old mouth-breather like myself, ether really doesn't "sound" flammable. So, I went back into the house and got a 1 pound can of pyrodex (black powder for muzzle loader rifles) to add to the excitement.
At this point, I set the can of ether on the stump and opened up the can of black powder. My intentions were to sprinkle a little bit around the ether can but it all sorta dumped out on me. No biggie...1lb pyrodex and 16 oz of ether should make a loud pop, kinda like a firecracker - you know? You know what? Screw that. I'm going back in the house for the other can. Yes, I got a second can of pyrodex and dumped it too. Now we're cookin'.
I stepped back about 15ft and lit the 2 stroke arrow. I drew the nock to my cheek and took aim. As I released I heard a clunk as the arrow launched from my bow. In a slow motion time frame, I turned to see my dad getting out of the truck... OH SHIT! He just got home from work. So help me God it took 10 minutes for that arrow to go from my bow to the can. My dad was walking towards me in slow motion with a WTF look in his eyes.
I turned back towards my target just in time to see the arrow pierce the starting fluid can right at the bottom. Right through the main pile of pyrodex and into the can. OH – SH*T.
When the shock wave hit it knocked me off my feet. I don't know if it was the actual compression wave that threw me back or just reflex jerk back from 235 decibels of sound. I caught a half millisecond glimpse of the violence during the initial explosion and I will tell you there was dust, grass, and bugs all hovering 1ft above the ground as far as I could see. It was like a little low to the ground layer of dust fog full of grasshoppers, spiders, and a crawfish or two. The daylight turned purple. Let me repeat this...
THE DAYLIGHT TURNED PURPLE!
There was a big sweetgum tree out by the gate going into the pasture. Notice I said "was". That mother got up and ran off.
So here I am, on the ground blown completely out of my shoes with my Thundercats T-shirt shredded, my dad is on the other side of the carport having what I can only assume is a Vietnam flashback: " ECHO BRAVO CHARLIE YOUÂ’RE BRINGIN' EM IN TOO CLOSE!! CEASE FIRE DAMIT CEASE FIRE!!!!!
His hat has blown off and is 30 ft. behind him in the driveway. All windows on the north side of the house are blown out and there is a slow rolling mushroom cloud about 2000 feet over our backyard. There is a Honda 185s three wheeler parked on the other side of the yard and the fenders are drooped down and are now touching the tires.
I wish I knew what I said to my dad at this moment. I don't know - I know I said something. I couldn't hear. I couldn't hear inside my own head. I don't think he heard me either... not that it would really matter. I don't remember much from this point on. I said something, felt a sharp pain, and then woke up later. I felt a sharp pain, blacked out, woke later.... repeat this process for an hour or so and you get the idea. I remember at one point my mom had to give me CPR so dad could beat me some more. Bring him back to life so dad can kill him again. Thanks mom.
One thing is for sure... I never had to mow around that stump again. Mom had been bitching about that thing for years and dad never did anything about it. I stepped up to the plate and handled business.
Dad sold his muzzleloaders a week or so later. And I still have some sort of bone growth abnormality either from the blast or the beating. Or both.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, get your kids into archery. ItÂ’s good discipline and will teach them skills they can use later on in life. Something they won't learn in school.
Perfect timing on that story RB - and kinda scary....I just bought Lil' Digger Dom a beginner compound bow kit for Easter. He has been shooting for the past few months with my sister and has gotten several bullseyes so I figured he was ready for his own set.
Last week he found the classic Impala car in the storage barn next to his house out there in the country and thought it was cool to smash the tail lights, head lights and mirrors. :frown: little 5 year old finger prints all over the dust - GUILTY!
That story causes me some grave concern..... :lipsealed: Good luck Becky!!
