This was the first year that I didn't have a secretary to buy stuff for. I'm actually on the receiving end this time around. They're taking us out to lunch sometime next week since yesterday was real busy because of other bosses taking their employees out to eat. You should take yourself out Kat. On his dime.

I actually got the guilt thing going right now... Bought some Tulips for the other 2 support staff people and myself a big spring bouquet and put out a plate of fancy lemon and rasberry cookies!!

Head of HR just stop and said what are the cookies for - I said they were for Marilyn & Marge for a job well done.. her eyes got real big and said "Don't tell me your department forgot yesterday!" I just smiled...

Love guilt!

So guilt must work.. here it is at 2:30pm and I was just handed a card with a gift certificate for lunch saying thanks for all my support.

Nice but hey I HAD TO TELL YOU TO THANK ME! Kind of loses some of the sincerity.

I've never worked at a place that ever rewarded me or recognised achievements, anniversaries, and not even much of anything around holidays, other than letting me have a day off.

Come to think of it, I don't know what I'd do if I had a job where I got those kind of perks. Honestly it just seems like a foreign concept to me. Not to begrudge anyone that does get those kind of things, or any of the national (insert job title here) days, I think it's commendable that people are recognised for what they do. I just don't expect it for anything I do is all  And I know that's not the point, it shouldn't be expected.

Was I making a point? Most likely not.. meh.. too many worries these days, job, life...

Speaking of which, why is it I can't seem to make any proper decisions any more? It seems like everything I try to do ends up with everyone I care about thinking I did the wrong thing, which in turn leads to all those people being disappointed in me.. *sigh* lately.. I feel like such a failure.. like I can't do anything right. I know.. sounds like a classic case of trying to be a people pleaser.. but it's not that really.

One of my first jobs was with a tiny company. Paid basically poverty salary - no overtime, no bonuses, nada. A real asshole of a person, too. Yelled ALL the time.

He'd treat for lunch once a month and THAT was our bonus. Thaaaaaaanks. :eyeroll:

Welcome to my world

Actually though, I try to use the majority of browsers so I'm familiar with them when it comes to questions. I guess that's the techie in me.

irritate: Being too irritated lately. I spent 3 hours in a meeting at work on Saturday to discuss a "plan b" that was written out on nothing more than a scrap of paper. There was absolutely NO reason it couldn't have been discussed Friday afternoon. I was expecting some kind of formal proposal in the fashion of a document outlining the "plan". Today I found out that meeting was a complete waste of my time (not to mention fuel to drive out to work) as "plan a" actually went through.

If there is one consolation, I don't have to put up with my current boss' shenanigans any more. On a parting note, I wish I could have been rewarded for the agony he put myself and my coworker through these last 2 weeks. But, in reality, he is way too cheap to do anything honorable like that. I was even willing to go along with his "plan b", I guess out of a mix of loyalty and the need to be employed. I know I won't see the same loyalty from him. I'll be lucky if I get my last payroll check, let alone compensation for time off we were never able to use.

Not having any breaks on the Blazer and still needing to make it home from work today. I need to pump them real bad to get anything at all. Add that to the $4500.00 head job on the Caddie and you're looking at a not so happy CM.

Nervous about my interview later today too. Anxiety is pretty high today. More wrong than right lately. :frown:

sorry youre feeling that way kc.

I actually had a dream that twisted yesterdays movie "KNOWING" with people pleasing or helping others. The whole world was ending and gonna burn up from a cosmic ray from the sun. Instead of saving myself I was trying to get everyone to better places. (wierdly enough most were in prison) geting them to higher places (this tall building) and directing them further away and giving clothes to those running up stairs that didn't have them. The worst of it all was KNOWING myself that none of it mattered in the end. They were all going to die no matter what I did.

:frown:

sorry to let people down? and a failure? I get it. you are a great guy KC. thanks for being you.

Hereis your chance to get a Weber Grill and the charcoat starter chimmney. The grill is used but it has been cleaned up so you bring it home and throw the burgers right on it. If you ever had trouble getting the charcoal started this chimney works great. Just place it in the grill, fill it with charcoal and a little lighter fluid and in just minutes the charcoal is ready. Then just spread the coals and and your ready. It works every time

I should buy this because the guy's an idiot!!!! why in god's name get a chimney???? you uses these so you don't buy/use lighter fluid....

Well, it's official, as of 3:30pm Tuesday, I am unemployed. I received my last paycheck and, As expected, there was no payout for unused vacation time (though technically we didn't get vacation time), nor any type of severance. I was told to go straight down to the bank to cash my check, which the bank almost didn't do. Then I was watched like a hawk as I cleaned out my desk and handed in my keys. No thank you for all my work for the last three years (during which time I never received a single raise) in keeping the company afloat. The sad part is we had plenty of business coming in to keep things going, my boss just played too many games with creditors and the IRS.

I can't say I didn't see it coming. There is still a person interested in buying the assets of the company, including employees (possibly anyway, the guy never talked to me), but the longer things ran the way they did, the less the company was worth. If he doesn't buy it soon, there will be nothing of value left. I'm not waiting around hoping he'll employ me though, too many things would have to go just right for that.

Lousy timing though to find a job. But I'll need to start looking ASAP. I just paid off my credit card, and I don't want to go back into debt.

Sorry to hear about the job KC. I'm sure you'll find another one quickly. You deserve better than that place anyways.

Isn't it a law that they have to pay your unused vacation? I know severance is up to the company as well as sick time, but I thought they had to pay vacation. Maybe ask unenjoyment office about that.

It may not seem like a good thing right now, but it may turn out to be the best thing to happen you. Now you can get the job you want.

Plus you get extra Obama money right now. Try and take advantage of any training or college money they might offer.

I'll keep an ear out and let you know if I hear about any openings.

KC0GRN

Thanks. It's a bittersweet deal. There are things I'll miss, and things I won't. Hopefully my next job will be a little more normal though.

I could try to get vacation time out of my boss, but I'd probably have to take him to court to get it, in which case I'd spend more than I'd get. I suppose it's worth asking about anyway.

Maybe the state can put the squeeze on him for you.

I know what you mean though...sometimes its like trying to squeeze money out of a turnip. Sometimes your better off to just move along. I'd ask though for sure. Sometimes just the threat of legal action works, but somehow I don't think it will work on your old boss since he's already playing that game with creditors and the IRS.
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 10:34 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

Precisely. He plays far to many games. Knowing the misery he's put some of my former coworkers though, it's best to move on. The less I have to deal with him any more, the better. At least I know my non compete won't stand up in court (and I have a witness if necessary).

Gee your boss wouldn't be named Bill would it?!?!

I worked for a Bill who played the same type of games - I was lucky I came out OK on that deal in the end because as an Office Manager I had the IRS chasing me for a while because of his "games"...

You'll find something and it will be better.

KC's company used to be a customer of mine. The company that I worked for at the time had a credit rating system, and that company was the lowest rated in 50 years of business.

Plus the boss was a big blowhard. BIG blowhard. leaving that job is the best thing possible for KC, even though it'll be a tough road to hoe in the next few weeks.

Minnesota is an at-will state, meaning, anybody can be fired for any nondiscriminatory reason at any time. Vacation is technically a benefit, and he said they didn't get any, so that's probably why no unused vacation.

Maybe, while you're looking for work, you could do some computer work on the side for some cash.

Seems there is always someone around these parts that needs someone to fix something on their computers.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure I'll find something soon. Of course my girlfriend would just as well have me head out on the road with her for a while (she's a trucker) so I guess we'll see how quickly I get a job or not.

Granted, it'd be nice for a little time off, but not at the expense of getting into debt again.
