yeah that blows, but look at the bright side. i'm now on my third job in 18 months (just started on monday yay. pics from the 29th floor of wells fargo place coming one of these days; the only down side is penetrating the proxy server.....), and i'm now making 33% more than i was at the end of 2007. even though the economy is lousy right now, there are plenty of jobs out there, and plenty of it systems jobs. you've got the voip experience, and i've seen several of them out there over the past couple of months.

I agree. You have highly desirable skills and experience.

You may want to consider some consulting/contract work while you look for work, and if it works out well, you may find you can work for yourself instead of being on someone else's timeclock.

Companies who have had to reduce headcount often still need services, and have contract dollars they can pay for them.

And check around before you set your hourly rate, if you decide to hang out your shingle. You can probably command a nice hourly rate, which is necessary partly due to paying all of your social security tax (instead of half) and because you will need to maintain your own equipment, systems, etc.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there in case you hadn't thought about it, but it is a third option to the two people have mentioned here previously.

and it has the benefit of when you end up working 50 hours in a week, you get paid for 50 hours in the week.

I'm afraid I don't. Care to enlighten me?

And agreed. Some time off would be nice.

And to answer another question, yes, the entire company was laid off (it sounds more impressive than it is, two people in total).

Thanks for the insight on the job market Ares. Hopefully I can get something better than I had. I might try the contract route, my old contract firm tried calling me a few months back, perhaps they're still looking for people.

You are right in that we're our own worst enemy when it comes to criticizing ourselves. I think it's because you know that you can do better and that you shouldn't have made the mistake to begin with. Where others can forgive you, you have a hard time forgiving yourself.

It's 7/7 time now anyway. Maybe it'll help.

me either. KFC sucks!

KC0GRN

Actually a while ago I boycotted KFC because of a particularly bad visit I had to a drive thru. My order was entirely screwed up, and I ran out of time trying to explain it to the people inside, who didn't seem slightly concerned over their mistakes, mostly annoyed I was wasting their time. It wasn't supposed to be a difficult order either. I left disgusted and terribly unsatisfied. It was a long time before I went to another one.

Only one fast food experience topped that though. A Wendy's drive thru where I had a missed item on an order, and I wasn't given a receipt. I went in to tell the two employees running the place that they missed an item on my order. The drive thru employee shrugged his shoulders, and the apparent manager accused me of making it up, like I was trying to get a freebie. I'd never been so insulted, and have never been back to that location. No amount of apologies would cover that one.

I learned a while ago complaining to management doesn't seem to resolve problems either. All they do is try and toss a coupon/freebie at you to appease your frustration, instead of correcting their processes, or reprimanding their employees. This happened at an Arby's. I gave them two chances to correct their problems. After my third bad experience in a row there (due to incompetent employees), I gave up on that location too.

Anyways, to sum up my experiences, in fast food, I have learned I have to have low expectations of service. I've had far too many problems in the past, and nowadays I just consider myself lucky if my order isn't screwed up

I should be more thankful about that though. The more inconvenient it is for me to put up with fast food shenanigans, the easier it seems to make my own meals at home

you just haven't gone far enough up the food chain. of course it helps to have tc around. she tells people all the time that she's the scariest thing they'll ever come across: a housewife with time on her hands enough to make their life a living hell until she gets an appropriate amount of satisfaction. its fun actually.

I ordinarily use the drive-thru window at KFC. A couple of months ago the speaker wasn't working so I went inside. It was a wake-up-call. There were no straws in the straw dispenser and discarded straw sleeves littered the counter. The ice machine was also empty. The fellow behind the counter told me he was alone and hadn't gotten around to cleaning things up. Apparently he wasn't busy frying chicken, because they didn't have any! He told me it would be up in about five minutes. I had a hard time getting his attention to ask for straws and ice. He was busy chatting with a customer with a child about two years old. This baby was sitting on the counter most likely in a diaper.

I left and haven't gone back. But I did print out four coupons. I doubt I'll go through the trouble to get the rain check, however.

I do not leave the drive thru window until I have looked through the bags to be sure everything is accounted for. I don't care how long it takes. the extra few seconds sitting there is better than getting out of my car and going in BECAUSE going thats the point of driving thru!

to NOT go inside.

Some of the most annoying things I hate: They take their sweet time getting your order together, but you better be be placing your order while you are still moving past the drive-through speaker. Then, when they give you your change, the coins are placed on top of the currency.......only to fall on the ground. Then when they give you the order, stuff is just shoved into your window faster than you can take the stuff and set in the car.

Oh yeah, one other thing...........They all call themselves Restaurants. Huh? They are factories with productivity timers and beepers everywhere.

I agree with that. I don't eat at fast food places very often and am not that familiar with their menus. I always feel rushed and end up just buying a basic burger or something I'm familiar with instead of something that might interest me more if I only had the time to find it on the menu.

A few times I've parked and gone inside so I could study the menu, but then what's the point if I'm going there for something to eat because I'm in a hurry?

Here is the email - of course sent at the END of the day:

As I mentioned at ThursdayÂ’s All-Personnel meeting, our current financial challenges require us to take a much sharper look at all aspects of how we operate this institution and manage our resources. One area where we found we can make significant cost savings without jeopardizing our mission is by contracting with an outside service to clean and maintain our campus.

Beginning Monday, May 11, campus cleaning, maintenance and custodial services will be performed by representatives of SDQ, one of the regionÂ’s leading and most experienced providers of these services. SDQ currently cleans more than 35 million square feet of office, warehouse, medical, industrial and educational space in Minnesota and has been a leader in recycling and use of green cleaning products and technology. The grounds and parking lot will be maintained by another, equally reliable, service provider, Cutting Edge Property Maintenance.

Uh Oh...look what company recomends them....

“Janitorial services have been a headache for me for many years. Repeated complaints and poor quality work made building cleaning services one of my biggest headaches.

Since SDQ has been providing custodial services to my properties, complaints have been substantially reduced and quality has improved. They provide excellent service with competitive pricing.

Thanks to the people at SDQ I spend less time dealing with cleaning issues.“

How true. They assume you know the 100 items on their menu by heart. The visual presentation is intended to up-sell your order. Overeating is encouraged........$3 for two and $2.99 for one?

All I want is the $1 double cheeseburger. If they ask if I want fries or a drink that I didn't order.......I just proceed to the cashier without answering. That really messes up their mechanized rhythm.

You have to be sure to get their sophisticated terminology right too. I don't like cheese on my burger and they ALWAYS ask me if I want cheese on that when I order a hamburger. Me, "One hamburger, please", They, "Do you want cheese on that?". So once I ordered a plain hamburger to make myself clear. Apparently it was too clear. I got a naked burger on a bun. No pickles, no ketchup, just a burger and a bun. I did have to laugh when I started eating it though. Wasn't bad!

Upsell the order to increase the store (not restaurant) volume.

Yeah.......and now to get a $1 double cheeseburger, they force you to use their advertising by asking for a McDouble.
