Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

For those people who haven't seen the video cuz of slow computer/internet speed...I think I've figured out how to watch them

If you click the link that BFG posted... the tinyurl one, the video box should pop up in the upper left corner. First you must click play... wait... when the clue number pops up then hit pause... then wait for an eternity while it downloads at a snails pace, then go back and hit play againg you should be able to see w/o all the long pauses.

The written clue under the video says "or". My post of the clue I originally wrote "and", but edited it to say "or".

bandana square (railroad) is just a few blocks south of como and the railroad tracks off jessamine. just a hop, skip and a jump?

Not saying it's in bandana square, but like they used the french school with the north star as a clue last time in como..

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel

Grab your walking stick and shovel,

again here even before the hunt starts the clue writer warns us that we have to leave our homes this year to do any real hunting....AND says we might be walking a bit since we have to grab our walking stick....I like the idea of the bike/walking path concrete not gravel.

There is Churchill Street running through Como, along with Victoria street. Elizabethan?
Tue, 01/19/2010 - 10:53 PM Permalink
OT

The Victorian Era was during Queen Victoria's reign, 1837-1901. The Elizabethan Era was during Elizabeth I's reign, 1558-1603. Churchill served two terms as Prime Minister, 1940-1945 and again 1951-1955.

long dashes = runways at Holman Field...

lights on the airport "dot" the landscape

runways point toward Kellogg (sort of)

Runway 32 points toward Lafayette Bridge

Runway 31 points more toward Swede Hollow.

Park your car and walk along the paths "bike path" along the river shepard road...

lilydale has a partially remaining railroad trussel near a sandy parking lot - where people meet up for fossil digs.

dots - dashes - away from gravel - harriet island is near there - harriet tubman lead the 'great esacape via the underground railroad'

tons of german heritage in the area - first zoo was at como, "den"

ugh. i'm confused

ok on radio towers I know there is often a blinking red light do they just blink or do they blink in a pattern (like morse code)?

I don't know if anyone has made this link yet, but the movie, Avatar centers a lot around trees, and nature. At least as far as I know from the wikipedia article, I haven't bothered to spend the money to go see an overly hyped movie, I'm just waiting for the dvd. It's cheaper and probably a better way to go, since I hear it's a long movie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%282009_film%29

I know the clue writer tends to write current events into the clues. I never really understood why they insist on doing that though. I think the best clues tend to be timeless, not just what's popular this year.

My best guess on this clue is it's in a large park with lots of trees and trails. Park your car and go for a walk. Same old hide as the last few years, it's off in the woods, yada yada.

I would be delighted to be proven wrong though

No say like that! I truly hope you are, on this, proven wrong. But I tend to think like you.

I would think they would pull it out of the woods this year with all the snow cover we have had since December. Then again maybe they know we'd be thinking this and put it in the woods just to spite us...I'd ruther not be climbing around in the woods aimlessly until clue 11 since I'll be working clue 12 at least I know I won't be in the mosh pit!

Hides in the woods generally make longer hunts. Yes, there's exceptions, but overall that's how it's worked out.

I wonder if this trend is twofold. One, it makes for a longer hunt. Two, there's not really much damage a huge group of people can make out in the woods. At least it's not really visible damage, or damage to expensive property. The kind of things the rules often warn about, because of course the Press is very leery of having to pay fines, legal fees, or anything else.
Tue, 01/19/2010 - 11:46 PM Permalink
l and a mommy

Longer hunts are good but not at the expense of the clues not really doing anything other than naming a particular park and telling you go look in the woods somewhere. I would much rather be able to use my reasoning skills to locate it rather than a shot in the dark at which area of the woods I'm suppose to be digging in.

I miss 1 night, and it's the first good clue :frown: Oh well, I won't miss anymore!

To me, OT nailed it... COde by MOrse = Como

The rest MIGHT have meaning but it also might just be filler.

With this much snow on the ground if they are going to give us just the park it almost has to be this early.

To long dashes that dot the landscape: Shoreview towers?

Snail Lake Regional Park is huge. You're parking and walking a long way.

From Long Lake RP and Tony Schmidt RP you should also be able to see the towers.

Not sure how this would be relevant (and it might have already been noted), but I was trying to get my husband interested in the clues last night by showing him the Soucheray video clue. After looking at Clue 1, he immediately commented that Soucheray is greeted on his show by

"All Hail, the Flashlight King!"

Reminiscent of line 1, Clue 1.

while no longer required to get an amateur radio license, morse code is heavily used by ham radio operators. Some for nostalgia's sake, but for most it is used as it is a very efficient way of communicating. A simple signal/no signal pattern takes very little effort to create, and even at low power travels efficiently across oceans.

If I turned my set on now, there would be far more morse code activity than voice.

Downtown Dave

Also, the beacons on radio towers just blink. They are not set to blink any kind of identifying pattern. Their only message "DON'T HIT ME WITH AN AIRPLANE". The regular on/off pattern is simple and far more visible than trying to make a morse code pattern.

And I Agree with OT and Tim--it would not be outrageous, given this kind of snow cover, to give us Como already. It's likely below some pretty hard snow. Anybody that was away for Christmas and had to clear their walk knows that this stuff just does not yield easily.

Lol@ don't hit me with airplane!!!

The first thought I had with the long dashes was competitive running. The 50 yard dash, etc. Any of the parks hold track meets for local schools?

I think Joe's unmasking and rant may support the idea that the video clues are not really worth much...

my thoughts are a mess...I can't get my handle on noodling this year (seriosly behind on thoughts) .....but I am able to get a list of parks in my head

HF, Como, BruceVento, Central,Cherokee, Crosby and +Marydale & +Summitparkway(just cuz of park pool).

Leaning towards HF & Cherokee

I like the Co Mo in tonights clue especially since I have been saying it since clue 2...

Other takes on it - I agree with whoever just mentioned it above here about the flashy lights for the towers... As well as the runway dashes. Maybe the two in conjuction form the dots and dashes.

- dots and dashes on a map represent county lines, I think, since my map is 7400 miles away.

_ I like the idea of train tracks, especially in conjunction with the above noodle.

- If Great Escape means the tunnels, or the trains, or the planes...

Most of these toss IM, Cherokee, HI in the mix, but I believe you can see flashy lights and stuff from CoNo and HF as well. (I'd check if I could)

Another thought on Mom's Noodle.... Minnehaha was Morse St or Ave... the bend in Minnehaha Ave (and Minnehaha Park) is directly across the street from the hiding spot of the 1954 Treasure Chest at Hidden Falls,

My $.02, for whatever it's worth

Well I really like the Como idea with Code by Morse. "Emerge from the den" had me thinking the zoo right away, (post 332) with bears being the creature that emerges from the den due to hibernation. (Didn't really want to believe it could be Como though, still have hesitation) Como also hosted an ice palace before which would make sense for the "ice was like concrete" Also the German reference works with Nussbaumer and Horace Cleveland who basically designed the park, they were both German.

You can't get a handle on your noodle, you say?

I can't get this to fit Chair-O-Key or Harriet. I need a tunnel. CoNO, Swede, Bruce Vento. Brucie Boy is leading the pack due to the gravel.

But really, I'm pretty clueless as to a park.
