Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

Yeah in clue 2 they mentioned do not disturb the statues. Not many parks with statues (plural) in Saint Paul.

Monkey, I don't men to be argumentative, but cry me a river! This is not the St Paul Pioneer Press Winter Carnival coNO Medallion Hunt! This is a hunt about noodling, getting out and learning about out in city/county. There is so much more to St Paul than coNO. To use coNO yet again belittles the fabulous history of this hunt and shows the laziness and lack of creativity of the Clue Writer.

I am so sick of that stupid park.

Joe.

while I always like COMO and was thinking there on the first 2 or 3 clues - but I think it could be a red herring of sorts to think Code by morse would be como...

enlighten me others thoughts on each clue?

No need to argue I agree. I hope it's not Como. As of yesterday I had a different park in mind. Hopefully this is a mislead clue

Railroad tracks, something else visual in the park...

if in fact the clue references the mc queen movie "the great escape" does como have any tunnels? or were there ever any tunnels in regard to any trolleys that used to run there? was there a even a trolley svc to como?

Lol. Ialso agree with this. I don't care where it is I just want to find it. Sorry green I like tims point better

I think the great escape could be the conservatory....where you can go to "escape" from Minnesota winters or summers even if it's a little too hot..

Escape... I got it! There anything at a park involving, Snake!

Could the long dashes just be all the streets that bisect the park. Most of them have dashed lines
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 8:20 AM Permalink
Mad_Dach5und

I'm going with long dashes is something visual - but we don't have any idea if the dashes are horizontal or vertical - it could mean anything from fenceposts to wooden rail fences to two radio towers side by side - vagueness is ALWAYS the name of the game the first week..

Yup. They referenced it in 2003 wih the former bridge near horton.

You have something of a point, Brass One, but it sickens me we have become so laid back we would expect a park and feel comfortable when one single park becomes the major thought. It so takes away from the while idea of clues; lettuce all sit back and wait for the mad dash clue.

Otay. We now know ittiz coNO. Why venture forth until Clue 10, 11, 12? That's no hunt. Ittiz a foot race.

There's hunting and there's hunting. I'm just an old fashioned kind'a gal that lives for the differences, the new year, the new park, the new ideas. Repitition in the same park is boring and I loose my 'foe' that I'm trying to noodle against. There's no compitition.

Thanks for listening and understanding... Or trying to.

Here's a thought. Could the dashes that dot the landscape be the golf reference? I've been scanning aerial photos looking for dashes and the fairways look a lot like dashes doting the landscape.

It's been seven years since it was hidden in Como. In the past nine years its been hidden in both Como and Indian Mound twice. I'm not sure why Como gets the bad wrap other than it's big.

There are a lot more hunters than there were in the earlier days of the hunt when the clues were more specific, but with few people hunting the hunt could still last a while. Now with more people using the internet and more interest in the hunt they are kind of forced to make it more difficult and not just put it next to Gates Ajar.

I do agree that clues in the past few years might lead us to think they better describe a different park than it is eventually found in. But that's our own fault sometimes for digging too deep and finding obscure references to a clue or clues. Until the last few clues, every clue could pretty much be matched up to every park and public place in Ramsey County.
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 9:25 AM Permalink
Brassmonkey

Yes and I think this is even more fun now. If it is COMO then we all can start digging and not fear that we are digging in the wrong park. If you are in the right park then random luck could prevail and you can find it.

OT

I forgot to add that over the 57 years of the hunt through 2009, it's been in Como only two more times than Highland, Cherokee, Battle Creek and Phalen, which all have four finds if I counted correctly.

The 2 problems I have with COMO is 1) you can make the clues fit there every year and 2) I would hate to think that the CW would waste that as a park hide when we've had more snow (before the hunt) this year than in the last 7-8 years. I guess if it were me I would take this rare opportunity to utilize a small-medium size park.

I agree, with my limited digging time it would be nice to know why I'm digging where I'm digging and feel pretty sure about it. The last few years the weekend digging has been more of a crap shoot.

But in the last 10? 12? years it's been at coNO three? four? times???

That's too much.

I'm still swimmin' in the river... Could the "long dashes" be a string of barges floating the river. From afar they look like a "dash", get closer they look more like individual "dots" - just sayin'

For Posen:

In the Great Escape they dug 3 tunnels... there are technically 3 tunnels at Swede Hollow. One is north end for foot traffic and 2 railroad tunnels at the south end.

Going back twelve hunts not counting this hunt, it's been hidden in both Como and Indian Mound twice. Como in 2001 and 2003 and IM in 2005 and 2008. If you want to go back thirteen years you'd have one more Como find, but how many years should we go back to say it's been at Como too many times?

Como Zoo proudly announces the birth of Twin Saki Monkeys on October 18, 2005. Saki Monkeys very rarely give birth to twins with the last documented occurrence in 1992 at the San Diego Zoo. The twin infants are with their family and doing well on exhibit in Como Zoo's Primate House

green, i wouldn't say you're in the minority regarding como. well unless by minority you mean "not going there even if the clue writer tells me exactly where its at because spotters have come and moved it because people got too close" for the vast majority of us, i think como isn't a "preferred" park, just because of its vastness.

I guess I'm not convinced of any park at this moment. I'm keeping an open mind. There are good arguements for highland, como, swede, marydale, vento, IM, Harriet.

We have to remember not to get too hung up on word order, punctuation, grammar etc in the clues because more often than not- they rarely mean anything and alot of words or order thereof is there to complete the rhyme.

So IMO today clue is telling you one of two things- either they want you to use morse code - if they are giving you one letter it would be G (dashdashdot) If they are giving you two it would be M (dashdash) and E (dot). Or they are using word placement to give us COde of MOrse-como.

I don't think there is anything visual here to look for, why would they bring up the morse code then? I could be wrong here - it's just a hunch.

(excerpt)....But the following year, a coalition of feminist groups, which included NOW, complained that the Vulcans were still stealing kisses. In a letter to the Winter Carnival board of directors, the feminists demanded that the board keep a tighter leash on the alleged horndogs.

N.O.W. is on Rice and W Charles - nearest to Valley playground on Jackson street. I wouldn't even bring this park - up it seems such a stretch, but:

-- Valley playground is bordered by E Mt Airy Street & Queen Elizabeth II is the Ovate of the Welsh Gorsedd of Bards tying her to Wales Street nearby (Her airs Elizabethan)

-- Near Como Avenue (Como clues can tie in here)

-- I94/I35E cluster (hot pursuit/get away from gravel)

-- Near regions Hospital (a blessed us with twins stretch)

-- Near Capitol Heights & with "Valley"in the name of the park (look high/low)

I am sure this is stretching, but I have to throw it all out there...

Just tossing out ideas for places that aren't CoNo

I love, love, love Como Park. I love everything about it. It is the single, number-one place I miss most in all of the Twin Cities. I even like hunting there because I know it so well. That said, if it is there, it is too many hunts in a short period of time. I agree with whoever said earlier that this should be the year for a less-known park.

The park, reservation or monument ( ____ . ____) refers to larger parks (regional and national parks), so if this is indeed what the clue is referencing, we should be looking at larger, potentially regional parks.

(Hot Pursuit/Away from Gravel) - Tons of Railroad tracks... Nearby is Minneapolis/St Paul Amtrack Office

(picturesque route) - Fairview Avenue/Pierce Butler Route border the park

As someone (I forgot already) has said above, Pierce Butler was a lawyer - soot/law-suit
