Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

photo of a statue of Friedrich Schiller, the German philosopher, which is also in Como Park. I don't know why his life and work deserve a statue in Como Park, but it's a pretty nice one. Schiller was born in Germany in 1759 and died at 45 of tuberculosis in 1805, also in Germany. As far as I know he never visited the USA....

Schiller wrote the play The Robbers.

Wrote the poem Ode To Joy (Basis for Beethoven's 9th).

Med found in 1980 near his statue. But too close to the frog pond.

I like the noodle here. Couple other nuggets that could tie into Valley

- Valley Park is right across the freeway from Williams Hill, or where it used to be. They last several years of it's existance I believe it was ground away to be used for gravel for MnDOT construction projects

- Mappys book says "No good parking whatsoever" which supports that we have to walk to get the medallion.

- The book continues "Long shot, very long shot" and I think we all learned from Crosby that the clue writer likes proving the map book wrong.

Forgive me if this was mentioned, but in reading about the great escape, I found that one of the tunnels was filled in with sewage and sand then sealed with cement.

So we could potentially be looking for a tunnel that no longer exists...

Just thought of a major negative to Valley. Construction. They're doing something to the steep hill along University across from Regions. Not sure how much it impacts the park itself, but my guess is it be enough to make it off limits per the rules.

Also nearby is the infamous selby streetcar tunnel, which is blocked off by concrete...

a good chunk of the caves (tunnels?) near harriet island are also blocked off.

like Tony Schmidt Regional: for a number of reasons but here are a few:

Fire = ammunition = TCAAP Thee we sing also sounds patriotic

Ice = slang for diamonds, baseball diamonds are hard this time of year

section 5 is Mounds HS - HS cross country and Skiing clubs use the park.

Schmidt is german name

Ramsey County - not in Saint Paul, Regional park that actually eccompasses more.

"Forest of Arden" is where shakespears "as you like it" takes place.

plot of as you like it, fits.

Twins - the famous conjoined twins Abigail and Brittan Hensel go to college at bethel and are currently sophomores

Hi (hills) /low - valentine park floods each year because it's lower than the lake

Picturesque route - many paths to go around wetlands. and so many more being proposed and planned. HUGE planning. Several Running clubs use this area as well, and I have I mentioned how impressed I am with the trails and paths for running? uber jealous. sorry sidebar.

away from gravel - several of the the factors of the new master plan and 2030 revision is going away paving for more 'natural' paths in the area - utilizing lime stone, gravel, bark, for the newly proposed regional trail system,

hot Pursuit - new warming houses installed i think it was 2006 from the plan.

morse code 1) radio station across lake @ college campus 2) new bocce ball golf course in the park. which bocce is played between two long narrow boards (dashes) with very large balls scattered inbetween (dots)

2) not to mention if looking at maps of the park, you can line up the powerlines which are marked by dots with long dashes with the railroad that cuts though the park at a point.

3) all the proposed new trails are dots and dashes on all the maps.

park your car - at the park - but the medallion is actually somewhere down a trail or pathway not necessarily in the park (but public land)

ALSO, proposed trail system becomes an intregal part of the overall transporation network --hence not using your car / eliminate the use of driving - tying back to sir soot and sins (enviornment / mother earth)

speaking of railways etc - the underpass for the railroad was in stalled in 2006 - allowing pedestrians to escape the dangers

and in efforts to get more use out of the park (and justify money) they are looking at more events including things for children such as snowman building contests and other winter festivities.

Sounds like to me, they are just beggin to get people up in the area to come check out the park and get more use out of it, and make a name for itself.

I could prolly go on, but i haven't finished reading the 80 something pages of proposals @ this point.

two more thoughts, in looking back through past posts in 2008(?) our lovely Terry Valentine sights the bitterly cold weather in 1988 the last year it was hidden there.

have no idea how to link her 2 comments but if you search on Tony Schmidt you can see them. :sheepish:

maybe the get off our duff, or emerge from the den means get out of saint paul and drive out to an area we don't normally think about?

btw - page 16 of the plan shows the proposed paths and each of the turf types so you can stay away from gravel.

Well, if it doesn't refer to a tunnel (which there is a tunnel at Como), couldn't it refer to Lake Como in Italy with is a resort/escape location or to Casey the gorilla's escape (around 1994)?

There are a number of other people who like Tony Schmidt too. I think the arguments are pretty good (Although I don't like the twins one). I'm not ready to stick my shovel in the ground yet, so to speak.

you can also look it it like there is lake johanna and little lake johanna which would be twins of a sort, although one bigger and one smaller.

it's actually the whole twin aspect that brought me to try to fit the clues. My BF watched the videos (total newbie to this) and after seeing them looks at me and says , are there any conjoined twins there? look at the arms, one (viking) is missing his right, and then the MJ doll one is missing left - two separate personalities sharring one body. we google it and they happen to be @ bethel.

I know. But the family is really private and are trying to raise their kids as "normally" as possible. I just can't see it used as an explanation in a clue.

That said, I still think Tony Schmidt is an option.

that Como Town has remote driving cars, bumper cars, fire trucks, etc. One of Como Town's reviews said kids get a "driver's license" after completing the ride "drivers school."

I dont think I've seen anything posted on it yet, so:

Hidden Falls - my first thought when seeing clue 4, was morse code - they're in a sense, hidden codes.....

also - long dashes that dot the landscape - power lines?

we know that they've referenced those things before... and they've also done it AT that park too.....

would they do it again?
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 3:08 PM Permalink
Wicked Nick

Como?

I gotta agree the Code by Morse reeks of Como.... there are also other loosely based deals that could reference the zoo, or whatever have you....

den?

what about the twins?.... Buzz and Neil, the polar bears?

I dont know....

Off to Cherokee, HF, and Como, before clue-time.
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 3:10 PM Permalink
leelabell

Aren't Buzz and Neil still in Detroit (or wherever)? Not that it would matter. We should know they exist and are coming back.
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 3:13 PM Permalink
Wicked Nick

Yeah...

I'm not exactly sure where they are, but I believe they still have work to do, on the polar bear habitat...

I havent been there since like july or august, though... so I could be wrong....

queen - thanks for finding those tunnels and rock things!

I had another thought for Como - coming out of the den could be the pavillion at Como where we know there are dashed lines on the walking/biking path around the lake.

And inside that pavillion is Black Bear Crossing.
