Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

I wonder when they record the clue videos. They may have just thought it would be funny once the forecast came out and said we'd be out digging in the rain. When I am out there I'll be singing "digging in the rain, just digging in the rain".

Now, to find my wind/water proof pants.

the problem with the areas of lilydale park that dave mentioned is that they are south of the invisible annapolis street extension, and this in dakota county. which is one really big reason i don't like the park; too close to the county line that they'd have to be very careful where they place the thing to make sure its in bounds.

that might be why they picked the place though.... because it really doesnt matter.

I think it's certainly a possibility that later clues could send us somewhere either near Lilydale (Harriet, Cherokee) or across town.

thats what Im afraid of. we spent alot of time at lilydale last year, before getting to SH, and in 2003 we were at harriet til 10 before they sent us to como. I can still fit everything at como, so I have a hard time going somewhere else thinking they might throw us back to como in the end.

I'm looking at a couple of maps and a satellite view and I believe Dave is wrong. The old Brickyard and the waterfalls and all of that stuff is north of the line.

I want to get that "I know where it is" feeling...and I had that more at Como than anywhere else...but still not the way I want to get it.

I won't find it soon. I can't get motivated to go out and look anymore. Maybe later. The whole needle in a haystack thing is getting old.

I would absolutely advise against walking down to Lilydale from Cherokee Heights, unless there is a walking/hiking path.

A friend and I went to the caves in Lilydale once in the winter, decided to take the shortcut and climb up the bluff to get home (I lived near Annapolis and Cherokee). It took us about 3 hours to get up that bluff in the snow and ice. Might be quick going down that hill today, but a long way back to your car!

These things are awesome for traction on ice and slippery snow, without being dangerous.

http://www.yaktrax.com/ProductsPro.aspx

Not meant to be worn indoors, could scratch floors or snag carpet.

But super quick and easy to get on and off your shoes or boots.

I wear them hiking the hills here in the winter.

There is a good trail that "tacks" down from the top, but still, with the ice I wouldn't want to walk back up there.

It really is a beautiful park, with the frozen falls and all.

Its a new walking path they put in...

you need to go to down vento trail (south end of cherokee) just off annnapolis.....the path is not that bad in the summertime but its getting icey now...

I have a pair of those - but mine don't have the strap across the top of the foot. They are wonderful for icy walks.

Goodnight

If it is too icy, and you are stuck home anyways, we should be featured on some lil snippets on FSN for Hockey Day today. We are going to be at our Public Affairs Office for a viewing of the game, and I was told that you may be able to see us too, maybe they will talk with us - who knows...

Of course, the hunt takes priority - but if you are stuck inside....

As far as sailing terms go there is no such thing as a westerly tack, there are only port or starboard tacks.
Sat, 01/23/2010 - 11:12 AM Permalink
jengerm

I am a tad confused about how this site works so I hope this ends up in the right place....but, a westerly tack means that you would use the winds that are coming from the west to tack across the water. So you would actually be traveling East.

There is a bat cave in the area so there are at least hundreds if not thousands of bats in the area, but they should be mostly in hibernation. (I volunteer at the MN Wildlife Rehab Center and that cave is where we release bats to.)

Just returned from West HI and Sam Morgan Trail. Saw the Fury Jeep for pp going through HI and radioing. Not sure if he was reporting how many people there or what. Also, if you go to Sam Morgan don't park across Shepard on the Northwest corner. Police just waiting behind building to ticket.

"westerly tack" you tack against the wind. not with it. tack has a "track" meaning also. Follow the track (RR) west from the stack.

Leads to the Ford Plant (long dashes are spurs at the plant).

Hidden Falls north margin yields a view of lock and Dam #1 where the water bubbles and gurgles. The dam could be the "productive seam" -- hydro-electric plant.

storeowners anchor could be the Donaldsons; Daytons; Fields; Macys et al where the bookstore now stands on ford parkway.

Figures grand in scale could be the power distribution towers that cross the river and then parallel the trail until exiting the south end of HF by the bridge.

from mnhs.org

Samuel H. Morgan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on February 21st, 1911. He graduated from Harvard Law in 1936 and was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in the same year. He was a partner at the firm Briggs and Morgan, where he practiced law, focusing on conservation.

Morgan served as chairman of the Minnesota Council of State Parks from 1966-1970 and in 1967 he helped organize the Minnesota Parks Foundation. Morgan was instrumental in the establishment of Afton State Park, the formation of Lilydale Park and the formation of Fort Snelling State Park. He was also influential in a major addition to William O'Brien State Park, an addition to Lake Bemidji State Park, and the acquisition of the Fredrick Manfred house at Blue Mounds State Park. He died on October 17, 2000, in St Paul.

The song, "Singing in the Rain" was originally written for the Los Angeles stage revue "Hollywood Music Box Revue of 1927". It was later featured in the 1929 film "The Hollywood Revue of 1929", where it was sung by the Brox Sisters and used as the "show-stopping" color finale of the film. The song was also used in the films "Speak Easily" (1932), "Little Nellie Kelly" (1940), "Hi, Beautiful" (1944), "A Clockwork Orange" (1971), and "ThatÂ’s Entertainment" (1974). Arthur Freed wrote the lyrics for the song, and Nacio Herb Brown wrote the music.

--Crosby sang it but definitely didn't write it... I don't think that's him singing in the video clue tho.

OK back to the question of Lilydale - If the signs all say St. Paul parks and rec don't that mean the park would be totally concidered a St. Paul park?

Went out to Lilydale with the girls today I saw some good landmarks but still didn't get the YES!! Vibe I normally get.

This year is the first year I've taken them out to truely dig...they dig abuot as well as they clean their room. There were a bunch of concrete blocks piled up near the river down by the Train Bridge I told them to dig up the snow and look around all of them I gave them each their own pile two seconds later they were like ok done..I'm like two swipes of the snow is not diggin' it up...They need some serious training.

That's what I miss about those early days of hunting; the Med was usually in a park and my younger kids could go sliding or even have hot chocolate in a Rec building while me and the older kids dug. Good memories. The past couple of hunts are away from fun things for kids to do. They have great memories of hunts gone by.

Use to be a family outing. Lilydale wouldn't be fun for younger kids like hunts awhile ago in parks.

yes... it is run by St. Paul Parks & Rec and is considered a Saint Paul regional park...

But I still think the county line plays an important role in it... even tho the whole park is considered a "Saint Paul park" a big portion of it is not in Ramsey county, so it would have to be hidden in the Ramsey county portion...

if not, that would completely defeat the purpose of the rules of the hunt, and of clue 1.

Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo

Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo

Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo

Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo...

I'm singing in the rain

Just singing in the rain

What a glorious feelin'

I'm happy again

I'm laughing at clouds

So dark up above

The sun's in my heart

And I'm ready for love

Let the stormy clouds chase

Everyone from the place

Come on with the rain

I've a smile on my face

I walk down the lane

With a happy refrain

Just singin',

Singin' in the rain

Dancin' in the rain

Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah

Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah

I'm happy again!

I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain!

I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain...

[ADDITIONAL VERSE]

Why am I smiling

And why do I sing?

Why does September

Seem sunny as spring?

Why do I get up

Each morning and start?

Happy and head up

With joy in my heart

Why is each new task

A trifle to do?

Because I am living

A life full of you.
