Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

I'm with Pooh on the Sam Morgan trail area. It is regional by name, the landing for riverboats, power lines and old NSP stack, the coal plant and burned trees (soot),and those big fish really draw me back to this spot...it's the place I can make everything fit, except the delta.

Raspberry Island is at

River Mile 839.50 — On the Water.

Note the double bridges going to it. Do they connect to Harriet, then? Never been on Raspberry.

Mystic Caverns. River Mile 840.70 — Right Descending Bank (Brickyard, Fountain Cave area).

Mystic Caverns was a cave gambling joint, dance hall, and speakeasy tavern from 1933 to 1934. Mystic Caverns had a polished wooden dance floor, a monstrous chandelier, kitchen, and tables with white table-cloths. The entrance of this cave is now obliterated.

The caves in this area used as night clubs included Mystic Cavern, Castle Royal, and The Cave.

if you look at the lighter colored bridge to the left and up from the building in that picture, that bridge connects to harriet.

Harriet, leading into Lilydale. Or, Lilydale leading into Harriet. That would be an edge/seam. Seems to me enkneeweigh.

To Coolers that stand in line at the paper:

Please get into line where you are supposed to. I left Yarusso's last night before many of you did and couldn't believe how many of you managed to get in line ahead of me! It's not like you didn't just see each other at the bar (and are going to see each other in the lobby). There were a bunch of you talking to CM and Me2 (that left Yarusso's after I did); I saw you just walk up to them, talk, but never leave! (except Iceman, who went back to his place in line once the doors opened) If it rubs another Cooler the wrong way, how do you think the non-Coolers in line feel about it? It gives us a bad reputation and is disrespectful to anyone who was there before you arrived...please stop!

The region dealy could mean a specific part of a regional park... Lilydale or Harriet. They're one regional park but the Medallion will only be in one of the two parts. Prolly close to the boarder of the two.

Sorry Becks. FWIW I usually go stand in front with MM and Kait, but don't go in until close to where the line was when I arrived.

That being said, I don't think it matters as much on the early clues. My opinionation (to quote LAmommy) is that clues 10 and up are the only ones that line placement could effect the outcome. Maybe that's folks reasoning? Not really bad intentions...

Either way, I will be more cognizant of this, thanks for stepping up

Zephy, can you clear this up for me? You were answering Mom about the silos and being able to see them and being across the river. On which side do you think you have to be? Sheppard Road side or Harriet side?
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:48 AM Permalink
Eags

I think you have to be where you can only see 15 silos, not sure if there is such a vantage point on the Shepard Road side? I think this is one of those line-of-sight clues.

zephyrus

I dunno... I like the Sheppard side, where the train bridge crosses the river. Others like the Park side. I am thinking it is time they went outside of a park...
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:50 AM Permalink
green

Ok. Thanks. I'm still thinking Harriet side.

Eags, I read it as you need only see one of the 15. Because they say one of 15.
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:54 AM Permalink
Eags

I think you need to see 15, but focus on 1.
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:55 AM Permalink

I think the Omaha 15 bridge (which is also 1 of 15) is important too.

Perhaps these two 15s are the twins?
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:56 AM Permalink
zephyrus

Wouldn't it be Cherokee, down the hill as well there? I dunno, I have never hunted there before.
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 10:58 AM Permalink
Eags

I wouldn't rule out the 1 in 15 parks theory, and if that involves a WSP park that may be in Ramsey County, that would be Kennedy Park on Dodd Road. There was some early talk of Baker, and that does lie at the margin of SP/WSP but looks like definitely in Ramsey County. I don't know if anything much fits at either of those parks. Wish I wasn't 400 miles away!

Wish I wasn't 400 miles away!

I agree!

Mad_Dach5und

For Lilydale:

I still think from the clues so far the 'Twins' reference is your best bet for a precise location - since 'Mother' blessed us with twins, I'd have to say it would be a NATURAL thing - like two trees or bushes side by side that are nearly identical. It's nearby.

--The twin transmission power line towers would be an obvious non-natural target. The two towers next to the wooden-rail fence parking area are RIGHT on the county line - 'Chargin' to the Margin'?

I saw a map yesterday that I was thinking how confusing it would be for people who don't know those parks. The map made it look like one could drive from Harriet Island, through Cherokee Park, and into Lilydale Park. I suppose, technically, Cherokee Park probably includes the bluff right down into that area (perhaps someone can confirm or refute?) but as a practical matter, one would not drive along the bluff bottoms to get to Cherokee Park, at least not the usable part of the park. Now, usable to the clue writers - that is another matter! Maybe they went to that lookout at Cherokee and pitched it down the bluff???

Just a thought from a novice hunter . . .

glean = angel

I thought it might have something to do with the "nun" that read the clues in the video, but don't know how it relates to any of the regional parks.

I am really enjoying this 'run' around downtown. I really like the civic stuff as it's a chang of pace and new stuff to learn. New territory. So different than grass and trees and benches and all. I'm really liking it.
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 11:06 AM Permalink
zephyrus

So if we take this to mean the nasty non-existant stack -

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,

A landmark

most uncouth.

And this to mean the 15 silo thingys -

Figures grand in scale point to a trail

Of footprints left by our sleuth.

Then they point at the railroad tracks (footprints) and you are now on the opposite side of the river as Cherokee/HI

right?
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 11:07 AM Permalink
zephyrus

Yeah, I was thinking down the hill, the only map I have that breaks it down, shows the down hill side being Cherokee there, as well as up top. ANd it has HI ending at the Marina. Not that it really matters, but I am more or less curious.

The one and fifteen could also mean not 1 park of 15 parks, but something that the park has fifteen of.

Could be so detailed down to a spific type of tree.

The Videos are just fluff and I will continue to preach that...

Horny Nuns, Male Blow-Up Dolls, One-armed Whores, Pirate Puppets, Irate Columnists, how LOW can they get? What DEPTHS will they SINK to next?!?!?!

You know I got an interesting question; if it were NOT for the videos would this change the outcome of the chosen park?

Bascailly what I mean is, if there were no videos, I think our clue prdictions would be different.

And Chair-O-Key has Baker Street where our sleuth, Millett's Holmes, walked.
Sun, 01/24/2010 - 11:17 AM Permalink
Mad_Dach5und

I think the Pioneer Press boards are absolutely lost with in the videos and there is practically no way to get them out without completely giving away the park I/we/most of us have in mind. I'm kinda glad otherwise parking would be a serious problem - it's a 'bad' problem today but it will get SERIOUS soon enough.

Good Afternoon!

Spent sometime this morning talking clues with my eldest kid and his wife. That was fun.

Then I decided to stay away from this board for awhile and really do noodling with no distractions. From there we did some scouting.

It has always been my contention that one needs to pay attention to what is not mentioned in the clues as well as what is mentioned.

No clues about picnics, playgrounds, shelters. No "it's in a park" clue - only public land in Ramsey County. Not that parks aren't public land, but no other mention of park except related to parking the car and walk.

I believe that at least a real possibility is the Samuel H. Morgan Regional Trail. That trail runs from about Crosby/HF to downtown. At Shepard Rd. and Randolph is a gateway sign identifying the trail. Landmark brewery is very visible from there as is the one place that was going to be converted to condos but now sits vacant with the LIVE HERE sign in the window areas. There were people down and around there obviously hunting...but not in any one particular spot.

Other places we saw hunters: at sculpture park on Marion St.(lots of seams there), Upper Landing (cool place, will need to go back there in the summer), and Como.
