Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

Brilliant analysis!

I agree with that, I have been watching them for fun but not focusing on them for clues. Perhaps I'm wrong but for 58 years all you needed was the paper and I think it's still the same.

As for clue 4 wouldn't it be fun if the CW was talking about us here at the CC since we all have avatars... because I'm sure he lurks. I know I would if I wrote the clues.

I liked "Marry-em" meaning Merriam Park!

Apparently we're doing the confrence call and everyone is at the park. There isn't much of a line at the PP yet, Yaurosso's was fairly quiet, and Burger Bar (where I'm at now) is dead.

Its going to be a loooong hour.

Why was nothing posted about the conference call as in previous years? Will anyone be posting the clue here when it comes out?
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:30 PM Permalink
Artemis The Huntress

Thats what we were wondering. Must be just a test run.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:32 PM Permalink

I saw something asking if people wanted to do one, but either never read a confirmation/missed it when scanning posts. I'm sure someone will be posting it here. They're usually good about that.

Yes, nothing more was said in here except Mystical saying it was a good idea, until KC asked about it earlier this evening.

My son usually goes to get the paper with a friend of his, but I just called him and he isn't going tonight because he has his boys overnight.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:37 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

Any idea what time they hand the paper out? I was tossing around the idea of going to get in line.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:39 PM Permalink
OT

Usually around 11:30. A little later than previous years.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:40 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

hmm.. so I still have a chance to go if I want to

It's that or help my friends by being at home with access to the internet. That might actually be a better option.

Here's a nice map someone at the old PP board posted of Lilydale Park with a yellow dotted line showing where it meets up with Annapolis on the top.

PilotsHatGuy

The clue has been coming out more like 11:15 the past couple nights, but it was 11:30 prior to that. If someone doesn't get to it first, I'll post the clue from Burger Bar once I get the paper. I'm waiting at the bar till the doors open, then heading over that way I don't have to wait in line in the freezing cold. Work smarter not harder my mama always told me.

I guess most everyone is at the park. Pretty quiet in here. I just finished some work I had to do from home.

Not in the park tonight, hoping its not found tonight as I will be at the park first thing in the morning.

Cluewriter help me, we need a new clue. Marley King is shredding the ones we have into pieces and putting them back together in some pretty wild ways!
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:58 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I really doubt it will be found in the dark.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 8:59 PM Permalink
PilotsHatGuy

I doubt it will be. If I remember correctly it's never been found at night with the exception of on the 12th clue. Hence why I'm getting the paper and staying in a warm bar drinking tonight vs freezing my ass off in the dark.

That said I'm hoping the cluewriter has got all his "it's in lilydale" clues out of his system and will actually tell us where in the park the damn thing is.

He might be onto something depending on how he re "seams" them.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:02 PM Permalink

I suspect tonight we may get a "rhymes with silly pail" clue. It will probably have some other information in it as well, like stay on the river side of the lake or something.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:02 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

For all practical purposes, that was clue 12. In fact I bet it really was clue 12 posted a day earlier. It took them a while to come up with the unpublished clue as I'm sure they had to write a new one.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:05 PM Permalink

Yes one side of the park would be nice tonight.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:05 PM Permalink

agreed, with windchill it was -40 that night.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:06 PM Permalink

It was. I believe it was ridiculously cold last year and a lot of people guessed it was to get the hunt over with before someone froze to death out there.
Mon, 01/25/2010 - 9:06 PM Permalink
Brassmonkey

I think it may have been found last year on clue 11 if it had not found its way into the creek.

Public apology to Zeph, I wasn't directing that comment to anyone one specifically. Sorry if it offended anyone. I/we welcome input from everyone. Just maybe we need to hit the edit button once in awhile. The good info gets lost in the tons of irrelavant info. And it's impossible for those people out there to come on here and share what they've seen in the parks when they have to slog through 200-300 posts.

PLUS I get frustrated when people are willing to write off a park because of what they see from a map or website or what they've heard about a place. My statement was to encourage everyone to see for themselves before ruling something in or out. You get alot more info from walking a trail than google earth.

I know there are alot of "armchair hunters" here that can't get out there and enjoy the noodling part. Again I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Happy Hunting and Noodling :pbpt: :goofy:

Ha, Art, Jester and I were out hunting over the weekend in Lilydale and came across someone who swears they were the one to toss the puck in Phalen Creek. She said she was to the spot early before the rush and when she saw the rush coming just started chucking snow into the creek.

oops....

I have a technicality question.

I always forget about registering my button. I checked the intertubes on Saturday the 16th to see when I had to have it in by and the site said it had to be postmarked by the 16th or registered on line by noon (11:59) on Sunday the 17th. So, I got my button and registered it online around 11:35 on Sunday the 17th. Then I noticed on my registration card that it had to be postmarked or registered on line by Saturday the 16th...

Am I SOL? If I find it, will I be hung if I mention that I read/post on the CC but don't get the whole prize!?

Dumb dumb dumb.

"Fill your silly pail with water from the street"

I agree AW, Its going to say Lilydale straight out. I think its also going to say something to get us on one side of water st.

OR its going to move us to Harriet or across the river.

There were conflicting dates given for the deadline this year. One said the 16th and the other the 17th. So I think they would have to honor any registrations before 11:59 on the 17th.

Yeah, my hubby fell into the creek up to his hip that night. By the time he climbed the hill and got to his car his pants were frozen SOLID! He swears by UnderArmor Cold Gear, he didn't realize how frozen his leg was till he tried to bend it to get into his car and his pants wouldn't bend! It was COLD!

The railroad cops were telling people to get off the tracks or get a $200 ticket. Stupid people... trains do go through there.. saw one today.

Didn't see any city cops... they should ticket people who park on Water St. There are dozens of no parking signs up. Even with people only parking on one side - it's still tough to get 2 lanes of traffic through. I saw one car that had it's mirror taken off. People should just park at Harriet and walk to be safe.

Hey do you think Yarusso's would shuttle people down to the park?
