Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

News alert: people who want the passcode for tonight and tomorrow night will only be available to those who can sign up for an hour shift to stand in line either tonight or tomorrow.

Great reg and Alex started all of this and just informed me they now want no part of it. Now we have nobody to cover shifts in line.

This is too much drama for me. I will not do this by myself. If people can't step up and take shifts, I won't be able to lead the call.

I don't blame you I think people should step up and help out during the day if they want to gain the fast and easy access to the clue at 11:00PM I am/was willing to take a shift to help out. I don't think it should fall on just one persons shoulders when the entire group benefits from it.

Wha....?

I get not wanting to do it yourself. Believe me. I TOTALLY get that.

But, there are too many people who participate in helping to narrow down areas, scanning for maps, history, etc. to lock them out of the conference call because they can't help stand in line.

I would like someone I know to find the thing, which is why I offered to stand in line in the past. Plus, I really don't like digging or the crazy crowds. I'm sorry I wasn't able to come back this year to do it again, but this turn of events makes me wonder why I did it in the past. I'm sure Tammy, Kathy, and others are also wondering.

Are we a hunting team or not? I realize we're not going to divide up the prize among the whole group, but a little help for our team would be nice.

Now, if you want to lock Jake out of the conference call that's another story...

I absolutely agree Lisa, but ended up arguing with Alex and reg. I finally told them I would agree to the restriction because they were willing to take multiple shifts in line and I didn't have any other volunteers.

Now, they backed out. Yes because of Jake and Jesse and brad and Jana and whoever else they have sited as people who have never taken shifts.

I am beyond mad

I drove through the park around 1:30 on my way home from my mom's Dr. Apt and it was hell trying to get through and there was no parking. I can't imagine tomorrow night if it goes that far.

My perspective is that I want someone to find it that I know. If my standing in line helps that happen, I'm fine with that. I realized that some people took advantage of my sitting there, but most people were thankful, very nice about it, and offered to give me some of the prize if they found it.

If Slim decides she's going to sit in line for a big chunk of the night, then please be appreciative of her contribution. I know most people will be. It sucks to give up on the mad dash. I remember the year downtown dave did the clue getting. He patiently repeated the clue to me at Phalen while I wrote down every syllable. By the time I had it down, everyone had run off leaving me to fight the crowds by myself. I eventually found most everyone and went home early because I couldn't deal with the mosh pit. It was then that I realized that medallion fever overtakes people during this hunt.

We're all competitive, but I wish there was just a little bit more sharing when we get to this point. I think about the Melissas and Bob, etc. They hunt as a group of 5 or 6. They split the money and have each others' backs. I wish we could find a way to be that way.

But, in terms of the conference call, it is either everyone or no one.

Need some instant feedback from ones who have been out there - wear jeans and long johns on the legs - or go for the heavy deer hunting bib snowpants? I know its not Mounds cold, but it is kinda chilly.....

But, in terms of the conference call, it is either everyone or no one.

See I disagree I think if they have been a contributing member in some way throughout the hunt they should be able to get in but people who have shunned the majority or better yet lurkers who we don't even know I don't think should be involved in the confrence call. Otherwise why don't we just yell it out to the hordes in the park...

I would bundle up it is -8 with the windchill and only going to get colder.

Personally, I don't want to get into the "measurement of contribution" business. I think if they paid their $10 to join Ableminds, they are members of the CC and should be able to participate. But, that's just me talking from Chicago. I get the other perspective.

It sort of goes back to the question: What is the Cooler Crew? We've purposely tried to be a loosely affiliated group with no real rules or membership requirements. If that's what we are, the call is for everyone.

lilslim

After talking with several cooler, here's the deal: I have enough people for tonight. Passcode is listed above.

Tomorrow, Redbear is starting the line. We need people from 1:00 on. Redbear will provide the passcode via PM or through a trollbridge.

I don't want to exclude anyone, I joined the cooler because I like all of the sharing.

Thanks for talking with me Lisa.

That's why 60 channels should be plenty - if others want to chime in, I'll put my cell on speakerphone if needed - but most of the evening It's gonna be tucked inside the jacket to keep the battery warm. My hands-free set is pretty good at picking up nearby conversations - I'll have to watch that it doesn't get too noisy.

I think it would be an excellent vantage point for someone to film the flashlights from the top of the railroad bridge approach - you can really see a lot of the park from there. I'd almost be tempted to do it myself if I get too cold from digging this afternoon.

I am kinda lost on the passcode/conference deal (tollbridge?). Is your text all I really need to panic about?!

Thanks
Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:37 PM Permalink
l and a mommy

I see both sides I really do especially the in your terms "the measurement of contribution" would be very difficult. I guess I'm just upset because people want to basically use others to gain info (the clue tonight and tomorrow) yet not do anything in reciprocation and then they get upset when they are potentially cut off
Tue, 01/26/2010 - 12:38 PM Permalink
Mad_Dach5und

There will be a few coolers at home not on the conference call that are pretty good about getting their message out. I remember last year Allison was at home giving info and within seconds Iceman and a couple others were reading it over the air.

I've done transcription and stayed on the conference call for - what? - 2 hours once until everyone had a chance to have it read to them over and over.

Now I can't participate in the call unless I come and stand in line.

When I'm at home, I am 400 miles away. When I am in the cities, I often can't get out at night due to not wanting to disturb my host family with my late comings and goings - they have to get up and go to work in the mornings.

I never expected to get anything out of helping on the conference calls, and by not being allowed to participate, I'm sure not out anything except the good feelings of perhaps getting a cooler to the puck faster. Oh yeah, and the fun of being in on the call even if I can't be there in person.

It was fun. Thanks - to whomever set the calls up in past years - for letting me participate.

It's going to be an open call again you can still get in on it. I don't think the new idea was to exclude anyone like your self or myself (I have to work tomorrow night won't be in the park but at work) but people who are in the park who avoid helping others out during the hunt but want Slim to help them by standing in line all day to give them the clue. IT's been solved though nobody is being left out everyone who watns the clue will get the clue.

Eags, the this was never meant to include you, OT, Green, QueenMalley, anyone that is unable to actually hunt but is a "board hunter", you all would have been given the code regardless.

The point that they (Reg and Alex) were trying to make was there are many able-bodied hunters that refused to take shifts in line, and lurkers that don't contribute to the discussion, that shouldn't be able to participate.

It sounded halfway fair to me, and they were willing to take shifts in line, so I went along with it.

That being said, it's now a moot point. It was wrong, they have backed out completely, and we are moving forward as we have every other year.

Sorry for the drama. I HATE it. I was just trying to organize and felt like I was getting hit from all ends. :coolfrown:

If is it deemed necessary, I can take a verbal shift tomorrow - but I lack the equipment to do a proper text message or anything like that. I don't have an internet phone, etc...
