Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

There's the hunter on one shoulder that's saying "ooohh that would be totally fricken awesome" and then there's the one on the sore shoulder saying "Oh god no please make it stop"

That would be pretty cool. One set of clues... two medallions hidden with 2 different sets of explanations to the hiding locations. :ooh: :pbpt:

It was't really named The Pink Palace - can't remember the name - but was called that because it was this big ugly pink adobe building. It was like a tex-mex McDonalds with drive-up, taco condiment/salsa bar, real tacky cheesey place but good food. On the eastside, not too far north of 35.

Now, KK... just how many native SAs do you think know how to do something Minnesotian as Xcountry sking?

La Cabana, maybe?

Yup. Exactly what I meant. Wouldn't that be something?

Only thing I can think of is Taco Cabana, and I know that's not it. I wasn't in that part of town much. Now I'm going to have to ask around at work!

Oh, and as to your other comment, that's probably why I spared you. <WEG>.

The snowman in the parking lot of a local church was not as fortunate. And yes, I said a prayer afterwards asking for forgiveness. It was much later, after my laughter subsided.

Maybe this is just a regional thing here... but I'd check various cities/towns around the SA area. You know how every city has their "days" celebration - here its <name of city> days or lutefisk days or pepperfest, well alot of these celebrations have a treasure hunt along with the other festivities- tractor pulls, demo derbies, parades, dances, etc.

I would at least go to various cities webpages and check their "days" celebration dates and check their event schedule.

CONGRATS from Texas. THIS is why is keep following this hunt. To see ONE (or TWO) of you folks find it.

What a great day for you...and your wife is lovely! WOO-HOO...the nursey is furnished!

They actually started one here, a couple years ago, during Fiesta, in April I think. Everything is downtown, which is a NIGHTMARE. I'd rather dig in the snow.

And I was kidding. I'd really rather be there hunting with y'all, but will live with the virtual aspect of it until I can participate in my own regional "hunt."

P,S. It's a hunt for a specialy marked cascarone. Green will know what that is!

I think it is Taco Cabana.

Haha. They're everywhere. The original one is on San Pedro. Cheap, so-so, Tex-Mex fast food.

No wonder you miss Los Barrios. Jacala sells their "hot sauce." If I can't find what you're looking for, I'll treat you to a jar or two of that. I'll PM you my e-mail addy so you'll know I'm not BS'ing you.

LOL, Sean Elliott (former Spurs player) used to do these GOOFY commercials for Taco Cabana.

Seriously, I don't think I can do Los Barrios, but you might like what I have in mind!

P.S. I want to thank you for the suggestions. I should've said that in the first place.

Who knows, maybe I'll find a hunting partner who will help me out. My issue is...I hate driving. SA traffic and all. But, if I could find a hunting partner, this could be DO-ABLE!

Thanks Tatergirl!

I remember meeting you at the Como Park pity party, way back when. My older son was with me. You wore green stuff, and green-colored earrings if I recall. You were very friendly and were "holding court" with lots of people around you. I was completely intimidated and in awe!

We loved it. And San Pedro it was, om the eastside. SA must have grown, at the time I think that was the only one.

No, not in the league o'Los Barrios, but it had it's purpose - just like McDonald's.

Ironically... The Winter Carnival is St.Paul's celebration and Minneapolis has their Aquatennial Days in the summer - They tried to do a summer treasure hunt across the river with the "other" paper and it FLOPPED.

I don't think they have many hunters here. From what I've seen of past clues, they mostly use downtown, which discourages a lot of people.

If SA would do more like St. Paul, with clues hinting at PARKS, they might have better luck. But to do it any later than April or so here the heat is so unbearable...you'd have few hunters.

I'd rather hunt in 20F than 100F, and I am serious.

That being said, I want you to know I DO make typos. But I promise if I'm ever in line, I'll get it right!

Thank you for welcoming me into this discussion. It's a privilege, and I have enjoyed and will continue to thoroughly enjoy each of you.

WELL...MY MY MY, I STAND CORRECTED. It seems they DO hide the CASCARONE in a Park IN SA.

I'm going to pay more attention this year, and maybe look for a hunting partner.

Here's a link to a prior set of clues. Now, I feel like a dumb*** (edited to be sure I'm PG-13).

  • *******************

Here are the clues we posted, along with their meanings, as they narrowed down the cascarón's location in MacArthur Park.

    Clue No. 1

We welcome you all to the new Treasure Hunt

And hope it will challenge your mind

    To win a black Jeep

    You'll have to think deep

A cascarón, to help you to find

    Explanation: The contest setup.

    Clue No. 2

    The cascarón is hidden where

You could find it on a lark

It wasn't placed on private land

Once again, it resides in a park

Explanation: This clue noted the egg is in a public park.

    Clue No. 3

Trees, grass and places to let the time pass

Is where the cascarón will show

Look on the ground, you'll find your prize

It's easy once you know where to go

Explanation: This clue noted the egg was somewhere on the ground — not tucked in a tree or on a rooftop.

    Clue No. 4

Parks in the city, parks in the 'burbs

The city has many, it's true

But not nearly enough, there's some well-worn stuff

In this one that gets plenty of use

Explanation: No question, MacArthur Park gets plenty of use.

    Clue No. 5

It's not in Las Palmas or Kingsborough, too

Not Blossom, Brooks, Stinson or even Dellview

You won't find the egg in Windsor or Ward

And it's not in those parks they built just for dogs

Explanation: This clue told you where the egg wasn't located.

    Clue No. 6

    First day of Fiesta

    Parades and funnel cake

Six days since the hunt's begun

For a new Jeep, the egg don't forsake

Explanation: Just a friendly reminder the egg was still out there.

    Clue No. 7

Kids on the climbers, kids on the swings

Happy screams ring through the air

On holidays the park is full

Of families with nary a care

Explanation: Another reminder just how busy MacArthur Park gets.

    Clue No. 8

    The egg wasn't dug

Less was done to hide it

    McDonald's doesn't serve beer

There's an art to this thing

And we wanted to tell her

    The buck doesn't stop here

Explanation: The park name is hidden in plain sight, albeit with some poetic license. 'Dug' + 'Less' = Douglas and 'Mc' + 'art' + 'her' = MacArthur. 'The buck doesn't stop here' is a nod to Harry Truman, who had a historical connection to MacArthur.

    Clue No. 9

    Find yourself south of

    Basse? Then you're Lost.

    Not unlike hit TV show

Explanation: This coy clue narrowed down the park location to north of Basse Rd.

    Clue No. 10

    The clues can be hard

To know where it hides at

Too easy and hunting's a bore

    We'll tell you one thing

    The egg, it resides at

    Seven and 1604

Explanation: One of the most talked about clues, this one used some clever math to reveal the park's street address. Seven + 1604 = 1611. MacArthur Park is located at 1611 N.E. Loop 410. The clue had nothing to do with Loop 1604. No, really.

    Clue No. 11

    There are houses nearby

    Really close where you seek

    The colorful cascarón

If they knew what to look for and looked out their backdoor

They'd find it with only a peek.

You know it makes sence waiting until tommarow releaing the explinations for the PP. Think of everyone visiting the PP website wanting to view the clues, people using the PP message boards. Everytime an ad displays on their page, they make money. I wonder how much money they are making off of netflix?

    You know what's weird?

They've never released the explanations this late, but there was someone posting on the PP board, whose name begins with M (maybe Morgain or something). She/he seemed to post all season (based on what I could tell today) and She/he mentioned the explanations wouldn't be out until 11:30 tonight.

Now how would that person know that today at 2pm?

Things that make you go hmmmmm.
    Wed, 01/27/2010 - 8:49 PM Permalink
    OT

Morgaine's an older woman with grandkids. She has some kind of hip or back problems and doesn't get out to hunt, but her family hunts. She's been on that board for years.

Maybe she's just assuming the clue explanations will be posted with the online early edition.

  • BIG* Congrats to Jake and Rob!!! Way to go (again)!

This was my off year . Resisted Lilydale like mad, just did NOT want to accept it being there. Liked the idea of a small, obscure Como area park (with the COde by MOrse, dontcha know), and if not there, then Hidden Falls.

Don't remember when I finally realized it had to be Lilydale - not that it would've mattered for me anyway....had NO opportunity to dig, almost no time to slog the boards, but I WAS able to dial into the call last night (Thanks to Redbear and Lilslim!!!) -- -edit- AND all the great souls that did their time in line!! -- that was really, really cool to be able to do a virtual ride-along.

Just makes me glad to know that it was serious hunters that picked it up! Coolerheads will prevail!
