One huge downfall for Macs - they are still using Open GL for their graphics, which is a ten year old (or older) graphic language and is waaaay past its prime.

They've already proven you can play games faster on an Intel Mac with Windows XP installed versus the native Mac OS X software.

from a programmer's perspective, its actually the superior technology, since you can write your code once, and after that it's interface type things in order to get it to run on linux, mac os, and windows.

actually, i have to question the validity of the proof that directx is faster than opengl. games are written for one environment or the other, so comparing a game on windows versus a game on the mac isn't fair unless its the same game (at which point its probably written using opengl and only proves that windows's opengl implementation is faster than os x's.

I lost the link - there was a benchmark test done on a G5 iMac running Windows XP with Open GL, Windows with Direct X, and OS X with Open GL - the Direct X came out higher for three different popular games - World of Warcraft, Unreal Tournament 2004, and I forget the last one.... still searching... basically Direct X edged out the others by 10-15% - not a huge margin, but faster nonetheless.

I have been active playing Unreal Tournament for years - the Anti-TCC (anti-cheat) software used by many servers don't like Macs - I get locked up for a solid 10-15 seconds at the beginning, end and middle of every match while others get verification in a second or two.

I agree Open GL is a more universal 'nice' way to do graphics, but if the gamers' games are created for Direct X first it's a lost cause.

are you sure it was a g5 imac? they won't run windows natively so its gonna be slower as code is translated into ppc (and thus, that machine can be discounted in the results).

i'd really be interested in seeing the link if you can find it. not questioning the results but i'd like to see what was done leading up to it. ya know. peer review and all

Ares, any luck on cracking the Pioneer Press' video?

I need to give it another whirl. How long do you think the clues will be up after the hunt is over?

cooler! i know bfg was doing it too. how big are the actual video files?

KC0GRN

Some are 10-15 MBs, the clues themselves are 4-8 MBs.

I downloaded everything last night. They're in FLV format, no big secret there. The interesting thing is how many file names include "Update" and "Update Again". Clue 10 was funny. it was titled "newnewnew-clue10".

I can email them to interested parties. I'm sure it breaks copyright, so obviously don't go telling Ma Press about it. The only reason I'm grabbing them is for posterity, and I'm sure the Press won't be offering them for personal collections via downloads or any distributed format. I'd be happy to "buy" a copy if they offered it.

i'll get an ftp area set up that you can upload them to after the hunt is all done, or we can swap a blank cd from me for a non-blank cd from you at the rehash on sunday.

Also you'll need an FLV player, or I can convert them to something more usable like mpeg video if you like.

however I have a NETBOOK/Mini Laptop and the resolution has ONLY 2

A lot of netbooks have low resolutions, just because of the screen size.

Typically on LCD screens you don't get many resolution options because there is only one "native" resolution it can display. Any other smaller resolutions have to be rendered differently, and typically they'll look blurry. Going to a larger resolution can only be done by making your desktop scroll, which gets very annoying (so much so that most times, they won't even give you that option). That would best explain why you only have a couple options.

As for ebay's response, it sounds a lot like legaleze. And what I decipher out of it is "We understand the problem, but were not going to say we'll do anything about it" basically covering themselves in case they either A. don't want to fix the problem or B. try to fix the problem and for some reason (money, technical issues, etc) they can't.

Either way, you're probably looking at a bit of time before the problem can get resolved.

One of our Able Minds members, who posts as Quarter Moon, is experiencing problems when trying to read and post. Here are his descriptions of what is going on:

"I am really having problems getting to this site..I have to go to

seach' to get here...and when I go to "Next message" it takes me back to search..."

Terry posted her bookmark and suggested he also hit "read new". He tried that and then posted:

"Now, when I hit READ NEW it takes me to a list of all the forums....it is doing it on all of my computers....."

"It is doing it at my office computer too...the same thing....hit READ NEW takes me to place I have never heard of....don't know the problem."

"I can't read new messages. It takes me to Able Mind Forums...and when I click on that it takes me right back to it."

I suggested that he try resetting/deleting cookies and temp files, and clearing the cache. Then close and reopen his browser, and see if any of that helps.

His reply, "Didn't work...thanks for the help....I can only type new messages in and was very lucky to get the message you posted Eags."

Terry wondered if maybe he had hit cancel subscriptions by mistake and told him to try subscribing again. I suggested he try getting in with a new link I gave him and then set that as his bookmark, in case his bookmark link had somehow failed.

His reply, "Thanks Diane it didn't work.....tried unsubscribing and then subscribing back on...still same thing. I went to another person computer and it was doing it on his too."

This seems like it has to be a problem with his account? No one else who posts in our forum is having any problems.

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong, or what he can try next? I have an e-mail out to him to see when his membership renewal is due, but I would think if he's expired, he wouldn't be able to get in to post at all?

Thanks for any help!

Hi all need some help getting a new I Mac tomorrow and am wondering how to transfer my I tunes from this computer to the new one. also is there a way to transfer my favoret web pages or do I need to go find them all again.

Mad_Dach5und

I find the easiest was to transfer mass amounts of music from one computer to another is to first enable file sharing on the new one, transfer the entire iTunes music folder onto the new hard drive in a 'My Documents' type of folder, then re-import them (drag-and-drop) into iTunes.

Usually there is an unlisted limit to how many songs you can drag into the program at once. If you try to drag too many songs into iTunes at the same time, it will bog down and go really slowly, or even lock up and not copy at all. I would copy them over in groups of around 100 songs or so - it may take some time depending on your library size, but they should copy 'cleanly' without a lot of bugs.

If you can only copy the songs from one computer to the other thru Bluetooth (wireless) sharing, it's gonna take a LONG time - that's why I recommend just copying the music files over in a data folder (My Documents) FIRST, so they are all on the new hard drive before you have to deal with iTunes importing.

if you're not afraid to use a terminal session and the network you can use tar to transfer the files. not sure exactly what you'd need to do off the top of my head but it'll be a nice exact copy.

and i thought macs were supposed to make things like this easier.

Why is it everyone thinks a mac is the simplest and easiest computer?

I'm not cutting down on them mind you, but seriously, they have the same issues as any other home computer. You still have parts that fail, upgrade woes, backups, viruses (yes, they do get viruses, they just don't have the market share, yet, to attract the hackers), etc.

Anyway, hopefully you can find an easy way to network the two computers together ESD and copy files that way. If not, try an external USB hard drive (assuming macs support them) and copy your information over that way.

As for your favorite web pages, I assume you mean bookmarks to those pages? If so, you should be able to export your bookmarks in Safari (assuming that's the web browser you use?) from File > Export Bookmarks. It will save them in a standard HTML file that you should be able to import into the web browser on your new computer.

We copied about 14 GB of iTunes files recently from a Mac to a Windows 7 Machine at work. They were already networked thru ethernet, so file copying / swapping the music folder went fast, and importing those music files into iTunes went trouble-free, as long as I didn't try to copy over too many of them at once. All track & artist info (and album art) linked to the songs seemed to transfer as well. If you are going in reverse (PC to a Mac), it's still basically the same story.

-------------

If you go off raw statistics for speed, memory, etc... Macs are overpriced for what you get. They seem to still be able to make a decent laptop package that has some of the best battery life, graphics and sound speakers out there (just ask Consumer Reports).

I wish that Steve Jobs & Co would focus on a more powerful Desktop computer model, or at least upgrade what they have for the ridiculously high price they charge.

One thing Jobs is NOT going to focus on is creating a gaming Mac - Apple has avoided that deliberately for years and probably won't bother getting into THAT game until they create a separate gaming console like the XBox or PS3, and there's already too much competition in that market.

Jobs obviously thinks the traditional computer market isn't worth his time anymore. He's far more interested in mobile devices.

We were just talking about this during a round of discin today. And as much as I love my Blackberry Storm and all it does, it just doesn't have the apps to make it fun. It's great for the business side of things but as a newly unemployed user it really doesn't mean squat to me now. I want fun! Do they have an app that's like those old stripper pens where you can tip the phone and the babes clothes fall off? If so, I'm jumping ship!

Why BlackBerry Users Will Defect

Blackberry doesn't have the apps because it isn't worth it for developers. It costs $20 to submit one app, but developers have to buy packs of ten submissions at a time ($200). Compare that with iPhone which is $99 for unlimited submissions for a year and Android which is $25 one time forever.

After browsing hackaday.com for a while today I stumbled across a website for chipworks, a company that specializes in reverse engineering microprocessors. Most people would probably find this very boring. However, they found Waldo on one.

http://www.chipworks.com/how_its_done.aspx

There are more if you want to look around. Kind of cool, considering they're typically hidden on a die of silicon inside a black plastic/ceramic package stuck on a circuit board shoved inside any wide variety of electronic devices you use on a day to day basis.
