Not having a job for 4 days!

Getting an interview for a long term (indefinite) contract at 3M.

There are 4 people including myself getting interviewed. And everyone from the printer group thinks I would be the best candidate for the job. So I'm really hoping it works out. There's not much room for advancement in the position and it doesn't pay quite as well as I would like. But a lot of people from that group have moved on to get HP jobs. And I already have made a few good contacts at HP. Sometimes it's not about what you know but who you know.

Anyway, I find out next week if I get it or not. It would certainly be good timing given my HP project contract is almost finished, and I'll need to get another job soon regardless.

Enjoy: A pal and his gal taking me and my little gal to the Harlem Globe Trotters this Saturday. Fun Fun Fun

I used to go every year as a kid but haven't seen them in like 3 decades. I was just about to purchase the tickets on line when I received the call. Karma rocks sometimes.

Got the call today.

I got the job

They didn't even wait until next week to make their decision. I guess I made a good impression. Looks like I'll be staying at 3M for a while to come anyway. Next stop is hopefully an HP job.

Now to talk to my contract firm and see if I can get compensated for the use of my vehicle when I have to drive around campus or to remote sites. Also not sure about my cell phone. I use Sprint and they have repeaters in the building. Since the printer refresh project started my cell number has been floating all over the place.

what? an iphone app? or android?

I might have to take a crack at programming an app someday. Might be fun to try anyway.

My current project is trying to see if I can resurrect an iphone 3G a friend found in a parking lot at a walmart before the snow had melted off. Needless to say it was waterlogged.. some funky corrosion inside it. Even if I can't get it to work, I've got some interesting parts I could make into something else. BTW the screws in these smart phones are tiny.. I swear my wristwatch has larger parts than these phones do.

I've missed actually working with electronics. I haven't dabbled much since college. I guess I just haven't had time nor the gumption to do much with it. Still, now that I'm home more often, I'm starting to get back into it. I got a nice soldering iron from my parents for Christmas, and I've been itching for a few projects to do with it.

This one I'm thinking of doing for christmas gifts next year.

I think it looks cool for a clock, but then, I'm kind of geeky. What do you guys think? Would you find it to be a nice gift?

Enjoy: Experiencing the gift of life even though part of that given life is filled with plenty of negative feelings and circumstances. All in all life is grand and I'm proud to be enjoying it with you people.

The statement above was not done under the influence of mind altering chemicals.

Well not a lot of them anyway.

Thank you everyone. Just in a reflective mood tonight is all.

I love that, KC! A modern version of a retro clock. What are you going to use for the case? I'd put a clock like that on my nightstand.

i'm only doing iphone stuff right now kc. its the only reason in fact that i even have a mac.

those clocks look cool! and i hear ya about dabbling in electronics. i'm looking forward to not having the rush of constant classes on me to get some time to work on my (at the moment non-existent) model railroad, and the electronics that will certainly go along with it.

That's what they listed the color as is tortoiseshell.

I like it, it seems retro. Slightly steam-punk.

I've been more inspired lately after reading sites like hackaday.com and instructables.com

There's a lot of cool projects to work on. Reverse engineering, repurposing, repairing, scavenging, micro-controllers, etc.

I heard that you have to have a mac to program for the iphone, but the programming software itself is free.. is that true?

yup, yup, and yup.and honestly i don't have a real mac, just a much cheaper pc dedicated to the purpose. supposedly you can even use the $29 snow leopard upgrade disc as a path to a full snow leopard install without upgrading. i've got it and will report back once i've done it.

Starting my new job tomorrow. The only things I'll miss about the project job is the pay and my supervisor, who was a refreshing 180 from my old boss.

Hopefully the new people I work with will be as good though.

what does a quilt calculator do?

is it like.... for those grannies who make alotta quilts, and dont quite know how many are laying around the house?
Wed, 04/14/2010 - 4:09 PM Permalink
ares

something like that.

actually its more along the lines of put in the various dimensions of the various areas of your quilt, and it tells you how much fabric you need for everything.

Wicked Nick

Now, why didnt you come up with something like that, back when I was taking home economics in junior high, trying to meet chicks?

everybody else was making these cool things, and I kept doing things all half-assed, and projects got half done, and looked all retarded...
