when sue's grandma died while we were in europe, we came back home to a $500 bill (fortunately most of the calls home were made on my phone and the company picked up the tab for them all). after that i decided that i was going to install an asterisk voice over ip system here, with softphones on the computers and call home over the internet (hint, magicjack can be a big help with this, but it doesn't have the nerd factor for me). still hasn't happened in its entirety, but then again i haven't gone back to europe either. its on my to-do list for the summer after classes are done, and i move all the computer hardware upstairs into the office.
